Ubuntu :: Bluetooth Access To Photos On Nokia Very Slow

May 28, 2011

Accessing photos on my Nokia N97 mini via Bluetooth was lightning fast on 10.10, but on 11.04, each click on a folder (via Nautilus) takes well over 1 minute to display the next level and to swap from 'Icon View' to 'List View' with around 90 photos in a folder didn't complete after several minutes at which point I cancelled out. To select 5 photos took 1-2 mins but after an initial wait, the actual transfer was fairly fast. I've a MSI U100. Connection via Bluetooth works without problem.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Access The Photos That Are On The Device, But Nothing Else?

Oct 17, 2010

I just recently purchased an iPod touch 4G running iOS 4.1 under the assumption that it would play nice with Ubuntu as stated here:..Devices/iPhone. It doesn't! I can't seem to get it to work. It shows up as a camera with 86MB of available space. I can access the photos that are on the device, but nothing else. I really would like to be able to transfer music to the device, but nothing seems to work. Rhythmbox doesn't even seem to recognize that it's there, the device isn't showing up in /media, and I can't seem to get a mount point. Has anybody out there had any success in this area? I've tried on both my 10.04 Desktop and 10.10 laptop machines

Ubuntu :: Remote Access Via Bluetooth?

Jan 4, 2010

I do what I can to Google and forum surf for answers. How possible, is it for someone like myself that is running:GNOME 2.28.1, Ubuntu 9.10 platform via my laptop, to use and control my desktop which was built by me, via my laptop if it's running the same platform...I've read posts about accessing Windows via Linux, however when it comes to find answers related to my issue, it keeps me from installing the OS on my desktop....If I can acheive that, would I then be able to control both units via speech recognition? The laptop unit has a built in microphone as well as bluetooth. The ultimate goal is to create a complete wireless environment accessible via bluetooth, command based or not...I know it might seem a bit farfetched, I'm just reaching the beginning stages of complications via SSH confusion and acknowledging Remote Access oppourtunities

Ubuntu :: Sharing Internet Access Through Bluetooth

Jul 16, 2010

Has anyone ever shared a network connection with another computer using Ubuntu/Linux? I have got a connection to the Local Area Network of my organization, but the problem is, it is only one. I have a laptop and I requested a connection for it, too. But the request was denied and one of the techs at IT department tipped me that I could create my own PAN on which my computer (which is a client on the organization LAN) would act as a server for my PAN and my laptop can access Internet if you choose to share your Internet access over the PAN...

I have no idea about networking and stuff. And that fella was too busy to lemme know how to set up this whole thing. Besides, he is a Microsoft Expert, probably never touched Linux. The situation gets worse... I don't wanna spend money on a Wi-Fi router. Instead, I could use the built-in Bluetooth module on my laptop with another Bluetooth Blip which is connected to my computer on USB port. I know people do that fairly commonly over Windows, since I have googled and found many posts regarding sharing an Internet connection through a Bluetooth connection with another computer.

A fairly old computer
Intel Pentium IV 3.0GHz
1GB RAM
80GB HDD
External Bluetooth Device (Not sure about Specs)
Linux Ubuntu Lucid Linx (10.04)
Connected to Internet through a proxy server
I want to make this one my server for PAN

A relatively modern laptop
HP HDX-16t
Intel Core2Duo 2.2GHz
2GB RAM
320GB HDD
Built-In HP Integrated Bluetooth Module
Windows Vista 64-bit Home Edition
No connection to Internet
I want to make it able to connect to Internet through PAN

Ubuntu Networking :: Using Internet Via Access Point Of Phone Using Bluetooth?

Jul 31, 2010

I've a Nokia 2323 Classic which I want to use to access to the internet on my laptop.

A friend of mine with a Dell Inspiron 15 running Windows 7 could connect to the net by just pairing up and right clicking on my phone's icon in the devices menu and selecting connect to internet via access point.

I've an eMachines E725 which lacks bluetooth. To overcome this I used a dongle which was able to successfully pair up with my phone via the bluetooth menu in preferences.

So what next ? How do I use the phone to connect to the internet directly via access point ?

I noticed that I did not need any operator related settings to do so in windows 7 and the phone worked regardless of SIM card present so I assume it should work similarly in linux.

What is left is to ask the system to treat it as an internet access device and use it that way.

How do I do it ? I don't mind a commandline way but a GUI would be better because I'm not the only person using my laptop.

Fedora Networking :: 10 - Cannot Access My Bluetooth Printer Any More

Jan 2, 2009

After an update to fedora 10, I cannot access my bluetooth printer any more.

I used to run hcitool to discover the printer, which still works

Code:

In the printer configuration, I used to enter a URL like this Printer URL bluetooth://000CF606C08A/

Note, the "bluetooth" protocol is not offered any more in printer setup.

I read that Fedora 10 comes with an updated BlueZ 4 package, which has an improved gnome applet.

Code:

The applet discovers the printer, but fails pairing with the device. There seems to be short flash up of a pincode error message (which I cant read).

I've been using blurtooth printing with no problems since Fedora 6.

How to configure bluez cups printing on Fedora 10?

Ubuntu :: NAS Access Is Very Slow (but Not On XP)?

Mar 11, 2010

I have this sitecom MD-253 NAS disk using Raid-1 and equipped with two 1TB WD hdd's. The NAS firmware is Linux of some cind and I use the, pr. today, latest firmware. However, as mounting the NAS server was not any challenge, the response time is in the most shamefully end of the scale. Even listing folder content is deadly slow, beeing from one to three second before list is shown. Both the linux laptop and the NAS is connected through cable via the router, the XP however, is wireless but access is no problem here.I found a few tutorials around dealing with mounting the NAS drive but few which dealt with the speed issues and none solving my problems. I saw one post in another forum though discussing if the problem could be caching but they had no solution.

I have used different commands mounting, but at the moment i use this one in fstab:Code://192.168.0.190/Projects /mnt/nas cifssername=zainka,password=********,_netdev,uid=zainka,gid=users 0 0Response time is not affected though. That is, for FTP the responce time is actually higher but then I run into other issues like that mounting it like a disk is difficult and the link must be keept alive constantly I also seen some comments about using NFS but isn't this a proprietary MS protocol for file access?

Ubuntu :: Painfully Slow Access To Particular Website

Sep 1, 2011

I'm having difficulty accessing http://egrants.ed.state.pa.us/v2/default.asp while using Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 10.04.I've tried chrome, firefox and opera as well as three different ISPs. My Windows machines don't seem to have this problem.

A little background:My agency has several offices, some with different ISPs, but with essentially the same setup: ISP router/modem --> Ubuntu Server with Squid/Dansguardian --> Switches, etc. When we first started encountering this problem I thought I had to have had something going on with Squid/IP Tables or something of that sort. I connect my laptop (running Ubuntu 11.04) directly the ISPs modem/router and have the same slowness. I figure that maybe the site is having problems. I ask the other tech in my office to try it out (he's running Windows 7) and he has no slowness with the site when connected directly to the ISPs modem/router.For the time being I've circumvented the filter box for the Windows users who need access to this site, but I'm not certain that's the best solution.I contacted the site's tech support several times and just gotten a "we'll call you back".Any suggestions on things I can check/change with my setup to get this working?

Ubuntu :: Minimizing Disk Access On Slow USB Flash ?

Jul 16, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 as a full install from a USB flash drive. In other words, I've installed to the flash stick just as though it were a normal hard drive. This is not a Live USB/Persistent install.

The drive is an off-the shelf 8GB Gigaware stick, and its read/write performance is pretty slow. Any time I do anything that requires disk access, it's very sluggish and tends to hang.

I'm looking for advice on things I could do to minimize the amount of disk-access made in the course of using the system, so that it will feel snappier and more responsive.

Some things I've done already:Installed 'preload', which is a daemon that monitors what programs you use frequently, and pre-loads them into RAM to reduce startup time. Mounted /tmp as a tmpfs (RAM disk) and moved my Firefox and Chrome browser caches into RAM. Set noatime for my root and home partitions.

Should I be trying to disable the filesystem journal as well? I'm less concerned with potentially burning out the flash drive with too many writes than I am with just making the system more responsive and nicer to use.

One other thing I was reading about is the so-called "Laptop Mode" that appears to be kernel settings to allow you to spin down a laptop hard drive: [url]

Obviously a flash drive doesn't spin, but it seems like some of those same techniques could be helpful here. Is there anyone who has experience running Linux in a situation with a very slow hard drive?

The computers I'm using this flash drive with all have between 2 and 8 GB of RAM, so moving more stuff into RAM is unlikely to be an issue.
