OpenSUSE Network :: Yast2 Software Updates And IPV6

Apr 5, 2011

IPV6 gets more and more interesting. YAST is failing to connect to the repositories. I have disabled ipv6 in several ways but none of them work or YAST (also Konqueror) seems to do it's own thing. I have managed to get Firefox to work see my "slow internet seems to be down to dns post" made earlier today. So as a check on the YAST problem I loaded each of the repository addresses into Firefox and lo they all connect without any problem at all. So it seems that the YAST problem is down to IPV6

In order to disable ipv6 I initially added ipv6.disable=1 to the end of all of the bootloader APPENDS. More recently following up further info on here I added a couple of lines to
/etc/modprobe.d/99-local.conf. These were:
alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off
This doesn't work either.

Maybe of use to others - It seems it's possible to see if IPV6 is active by typing the following into the command line:
ip a | grep inet6
I'm told if it is active lines will be output? So just what do I do to disable it in YAST and I hope in Konqueror too? It's beginning to look like it is enabled or disabled at the app level according to the Firefox fix.

Debian :: Systemd Failing To Start System - Recovery Mode Fine

Nov 5, 2015

My previously running debian system recently started failing with systemd failure messages as some services are being started. It never completes. I can log into recovery mode.

I added systemd.log_target=kmsg systemd.log_level=debug into my grub parameters.

After I do that all that I see scrolling down the page on boot are:

systemd-journald[36] /dev/kmsg buffer overrun, some messages lost
and the occasional
systemd[1] Looping too fast Throttling execution a little

Is there a way that I can boot without systemd using sysvinit?

OpenSUSE :: YAST2 Very Slow To Refresh Repos

Feb 8, 2010

When I start yast2 it seems to hang at around 50% (the lower progress bar) while refreshing the repositories. It can sit there for a minute before moving on. Once yast2 has started and I add / remove repos the refresh happens very quickly. It's only when starting that it gets stuck.

This is something that really only started after I upgraded to 11.2. In 11.1 the progress bar would move cross quickly and you could see the various repos flashing up above the progress bar. I didn't bother with it too much but it's starting to annoy me now. It also sometimes just hangs there permanently and I have to abort it.

I've tried unconditionally updating the yast stuff but it hasn't helped. My network connection is fine and I have now problems or speed issues with browsing the repo urls from a browser.

Ubuntu Networking :: LinuxWiMAX - Firmware Installation - Modem Works Fine But Failing To Install Drivers

May 17, 2011

I switched from windows to Ubuntu 10.10. But I'm not getting along with it as well as I expected I would Specially cause I'm not getting the best out of it due to limited web connectivity. I used to use a usb WiMax modem back in windows (which is also supposed to be supported by linux as my service provider said) for internet. But I'm having a hard time configuring it on my Ubuntu. The modem works fine but I'm failing to install the drivers [url]. I used my cell as a temporary modem to get help from the web.

I downloaded:-
i2400m firmware 1.5.0
WiMAX Tools 1.4.5
WiMAX Network Service 1.5.2

According to the documentation, I'm supposed to install the linux kernel 2.6.35 which Maverick comes with anyway.

Then comes the part to install the firmware. The command I used was

I didn't get it. Am I missing any package or something?

Fedora :: Updates Failing On New 12 Install?

Apr 3, 2010

I have recently decided to rebuild my fedora install and have had several problems installing the updates to the system. I am receiving the following error:

I am more familiar with using sources.list in debian style distros but I am unsure how to proceed with /etc/yum/repos.d. I am currently attempting to either install them from the CLI or to download the binaries, but I do not think that will fix the problem in my repository lists.

Trying to use Yast2, and it gives errors: " can't access installation media [url] " and this is with all the repositories that used to work fine. Not sure what it could be? I tried to use a mirror, and I got the same results.

Does Yast2 use a port other than port 80 to connect to the repositories? I have not updated the firewall since using Yast last. Have the repository servers been updated since the release of 11.3, to make some editing of the repositories in Yast necessary?

Once you go slack you never go back! Anyway I had slack on here prior to the change and it all worked fine. I'm running slack 13 and all of a sudden my network is slow as balls! I set it up as I always have so I did some research and tried a few things, nothing worked. So i enabled DHCP and its fine now.. I have a dell xps 420. onboard intel nic. worked fine when i first installed slack 13. Anyone have any clue what to do? I would like my static IP on this machine.

Networking :: Internet Connection Fine In Windows Extremely Slow In Fedora 14

Dec 10, 2010

I've been troubleshooting this problem for several hours now and I'm out of ideas. My internet connection is fine in Windows 7 but an older computer I resurrected (AMD Athlon 1.7 GHz, 512 MB RAM, Fedora 14 Security Lab Spin) is having the stop-and-go's with its internet connection. It will work for very briefly, then it gets extremely slow, where any page I try to navigate to in Firefox 3.6 takes forever to load.I have a DSL connection and my DSL modem is connected to a Linksys WRT54G2 router. I set up a static IP in Windows but don't know how to do this yet in Fedora 14, and I need to get my internet connection working so I can troubleshoot further, but with it being so slow, I'm having to use Windows to search for problems and then switch over to the Fedora box via KVM (IOGEAR), which I also just started using. I don't think that would be related, but who knows.

Software :: Flash Games Run Fine On First Play But Slow Down With Repeated Play

May 1, 2011

I've had this problem on a few flash games (a couple of EA's sports management games on Facebook, and the Pokemon Dream World.) When I first use them everything's fine, but as I continue coming back to them, they seem to run a little slower each time. Ultimately in the case of the former two it got so bad that they were unusual.

Why is this happening? If they were slow from the start I could understood, but what could be making them go wrong on repeated plays?

I'm on 32 bit Kubuntu Lucid, firefox is my browser, and it's the official flash plugin.

Fedora Networking :: Can't Access Fedoraproject.org And Other Problems LiveCDs Work Fine?

Dec 21, 2009

I originally posted this in I kind of feel like no one is going to answer... is it because I mentioned Fedora? Since I'm trying out Fedora 12...maybe someone here can help me figure out why I have the problem in Ubuntu, but not Fedora? Here's the situation:I've been having very strange problems on Firefox in Ubuntu 9.10 for a few weeks now.haven't been able to, except for a few minutes....once..... and it never came back. This was when these problems had already been happening and after several tries to reach Fedora's site.

Other problems are just as strange but not so bad or consistent: Pages sometimes seem to randomly not be found or they are found on the wrong server or something. After several minutes, though, they usually go away after refreshing the page. One of the strange examples from the "not found" or error pages I got was when I tried reading Wikipedia.org and it told me it "could not be found on this server," but....the server and URL it listed were from Google.com! The address bar showed that it was trying to find the page on Google! No, I didn't copy and paste or type the address, I was in an already-working Wikipedia page that stopped working and thought it was on Google's servers! Isn't that weird? (I might have screenshots somewhere...)

Anyway, any ideas? I have tried creating new, empty profiles on Firefox, but they still cannot access Fedora's sites. LiveCDs work fine, though. Also, I copied and used a profile from my Laptop to here and it also cannot access it.I even tried System > Administration > Network tools and tried Fedora's site in the Ping tab and it usually works just fine (sometimes it gets nothing, though). Also, I'm not using wireless or dial-up.By the way, I've only been using Linux a couple of months now, so sorry if I don't know stuff

Networking :: When On The Network, Can See The Shares Just Fine, But If Use A Crossover Cable, Cannot See Or Access The Folders?

Mar 3, 2011

I have a home network and I use Samba to share files. Now when I am on the network, I can see the shares just fine, but if I use a crossover cable, I cannot see or access the folders or files. My goal is to use a crossover cable from one computer with clonezilla to my server in order to use Samba to make an image of my workstation and save the image on my server. But everytime I try to connect with clonezilla I get a persmissions error and the share will not mount. I tried going to the shell and mounting as root, but that did not work either.

I have another server which is only a console and it works though I am unsure why. The share though is a mounted usb drive while on the one that does not work, it is on the internal hard drive.I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or anything I could try to narrow down the problem. Oh, I can access the share using ssh, but not samba. One other thing, the shares are set to allow read/write access to everyone so I don't see why I can not access it.

Server :: Access The Servlet Engine's Web GUI Just Fine Over Its Dedicated Port Via Browser?

Nov 26, 2010

Been a while since I last posted here, though I stop by often. Unfortunately I find myself in a bit of a pickle again. Here's the situation. I have an RHEL3u5 server running Apache 2.0.48 and an equivalent of Tomcat and JBoss. IBM's WebSphere Application Server 6.0.2 to be exact, the Apache also being one of their flavors (IBMIHS).

Everything's been going dandy since forever, but lately the httpd processes seemingly just hit a brick wall of some unknown kind. Checking the /server-status page reveals a whole lot of piling up "waits".

The funny part is that the load average rarely goes higher than 1.0, I/O seems within limits, memory usage as far as I can tell seems fine, disk usage appears all good... I would've felt more at ease if something did shoot through the roof, but there's just nothing to go on. It's definitely Apache getting its knickers all in a twist as well since I can access the servlet engine's web GUI just fine over its dedicated port via browser.

Here's what I noticed so far: Apache processes rise steadily to over 35 or so, after which it all goes south fast. As a result and as a temporary fix, I've enabled a cronjob that checks the amount of httpd processes and just restarts Apache if they're above 28. So far this seems to keep things sort of happy, but obviously I'm still twitchy with the overall state of affairs. I do not have the settings immediately at hand, but here are some further details so far:

Server spec:
8 x Xeon CPUs
8GB RAM

I'll post further details probably on Monday, specifically key portions of the httpd.conf file.

Ubuntu Networking :: SLOW Updates And Internet ?

I just installed dual boot Ubuntu 10.04 on my WinXP laptop. The laptop is a Compaq v2552us.

In windows mode, the internet works plenty fast.

In Ubuntu, I can't download a single update for hardware drivers or for ubuntu (it says there are 74 though).

It starts to DL, but max speed is about 800B/s, but that only last for a couple seconds before it switches to unknown. I am connected to my wireless router via cable, can't even get wireless to work (I suspect the aforementioned hardware drivers, which is why I need this to work).

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Rescue - Access My Files On External - Failing - Drive ?

Jun 28, 2011

I have an hp laptop and i had ubuntu on it for 3 years. my hard drive started to fail a while ago (i had ubuntu 10 on it until 1 week ago) and a then it all went black...I took the laptop to a repair shop, they told me it was the disc, so i bought a new disc, installed it on my laptop and reinstalled the new ubuntu 11. so far so good. i have now a working OS, internet connection and i can in fact type this message.

The thing is: all my files are on the old drive, which doesn't load/boot/start/read anymore. I have tested it on some friends's pc, tried a few HD disgnostic tools, they all send the same message: "fail"

I then tried to mount my old drive (with all my precious files in it) on my laptop as an external drive (usb) hoping that ubuntu 11 could read it as an external usb key: it gets read by the system, but it shows no files at all. it also shows an error message saying the drive can not be mounted, with some "sdb1" thing. i am sorry but i'm really dumb when it comes to tech language.

Then i tried to boot it on start-up but i got the grub rescue> thing and nothing else, just a sad, blinking cursor to recover my files,i have also tried testdisk but couldn't understand very well how to use it, and then photorec, from which i recovered bits and pieces of files, with no name. some of them are just parts some of them are complete.

My problem is: i have to get access to my files, as I use them for work, i couldn't do a back-up recently and i have some real important deadline to meet... for which i need those files. is there any way i could solve the grub issue and have that drive load/mount again as external usb?
