Ubuntu Multimedia :: NVidia Sharing Interrupts With Usb Controller: Acceptable?

May 1, 2011

I'm getting random system hangs and display issues when using my computer with my nVidia graphics card. On a lark, i checked /proc/interrupts and noticed that the nvidia device is sharing an interrupt with one of my USB boards, as well as my integrated sound card. i managed to move my sound card by editing my alsa-base and adding:

Code: options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 This helps mostly, but i'm still getting intermittant issues. is there any way to shift the interrupt of my gfx card (or usb controller) to avoid this potential conflict? i know the devices should be able to co-exist, but i've seen several people having issues when an nVidia card shares interrupts.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Display A Full Screen With An Nvidia Integrated Graphics Controller

Nov 5, 2010

I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10. However the bottom of the screen is cut off with only a trace of it visible. I had similar problems with version 10.04 where both and top and bottom of the screen were not displayed.

I have noticed that version 10.10 does not use the proprietry driver the previous versions used.

In desparation I have tried Kubuntu but the results are still much the same.

Does anyone have any idea how I can display a full screen with an Nvidia integrated graphics controller.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: VNC Screen Sharing And NVidia Drivers?

Feb 4, 2010

I have a laptop and desktop both with basic installations of 9.10 (Karmic). And, they are networked with a Mac running OS X 10.6.2. Screen sharing simply worked right from the beginning, to and from the Mac, and of course to and from both Ubuntu installs.

Except there was no feedback from one Ubuntu desktop screen being shared. Mouse clicks, mouse movements, and keyboard presses all seemed to have their correct effects. It was just that the results were not fed back to the remote screen.

During troubleshooting, I de-activated (removed) the nVidia accelerated graphics driver (version 185) that had been installed with 9.10 (Karmic). Then screen sharing started to work with the proper feedback to the remote screen.

I tried the pre-upgrade nVidia driver (version 173) and again no feedback from the screen being shared. De-activate the driver and again screen sharing started to work with feedback.

The bottom line seems to be no nVidia proprietary drivers if I want remote screen sharing to work. But this desktop is primarily used as a HTPC with a HDTV monitor. No games. No 3D. Screen sharing is probably more important, but essentially what am I giving up in graphics capabilities by not using those nVidia drivers?

Ubuntu :: Proper Analog Controller With Joypad/controller Mupen64plus?

Sep 15, 2010

Basically i want it so that the analogue stick on my PS2 controller, which connects via a USB adaptor and is recognized, correctly controls in game characters. It seems to work fine enough in platformers, at least it does with Banjo Kazooie, but with games like perfect Dark it seem to be trying to move forward and look down at the same time, also backward and look up simultaneously and look sideways and move sideways simultaneously , rendering the game all but unplayable.

I have tried running jscal and, apart from the fact that it seems a bit beyond me, it reports "jscal: missing devicename" when i try to run "jscal -c". Do others out there have there analogue sticks working correctly with games like Perfect Dark, or the James Bond games, for example?

CentOS 5 :: Eucalyptus Node Controller And Cloud Controller Apps Won't Bind To IP

Jun 18, 2010

I can not get the node or cloud controllers to startup using the init.d scripts. I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.4 with Eucalyptus 1.6.2 I have compiled Eucalyptus and all packages using the RPM supplied from Eucalyptus and utilizing yum installer. I do not currently have any processes or applications listening currently on the ports on the boxes as well. I think it may be a permissions issue or something because I get a "permission denied error", but I am not sure if it is Eucalyptus or CentOS. It looks as if it is not binding to the address on the interface of the NIC. It may be something else however. I have the Node controller, Cloud controller, and Cluster controller on seperate physical boxes. When I try to run either the cloud controller or the node controller I get this message:

Cloud Controller:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Old Video Card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT Now Beginning To Fail - Which Way Is Best, ATI Or Nvidia?

May 3, 2010

I have an old video card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT, which is now beginning to fail and I need to upgrade. I am not huge a gamer but I do play/buy games on regular basis. Right now I'm playing Eternal Lands on the Linux side. Looking to spend $100-$150 on a new card.I have a Core2Duo Wolfdale 3.0, with 2ghz ram and run Lucid 32bit. Also run windows Vista64Ultimate on dual boot (rarely).

I would love to buy a new ATI 5770 or 5830, ATI budget cards seem to be much better for the buck over budget Nvidia cards, but I'm concerned with ATI drivers and long term with Ubuntu. On the Nvidia side I'm considering the GTS 250. The only advantage I can find is lower power consumption with Nvidia and Ubuntu has always preferred Nvidia over ATI, as far as working drivers go.As Far as Ubuntu and Lucid is concerned, which way is best, ATI or Nvidia? Has anything changed with ATI support, that could make theor cards more compatible now and in the future?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Using Laptop As Media Center Controller

So here are the questions, what can i uninstall from the laptop to make performance better and/or is there another option short of buying a wireless keyboard/mouse (I'm poor and use what I have(besides i like having an up-close display for text and stuff)).

When I install linux top always shows a cpu load of more than 1.0.Also on the bsd when copying a huge file (4gb) it takes a long time but then the load never goes beyond 1.0. Linux will do it much faster but then there is a difference in the cpu load time. What I want to know is is there anyway I can interupt the processor so that the load does not go beyond 1.0.

Programming :: Generating Timer Interrupts In C?

Jul 23, 2010

I'm trying to understand how interrupts work. Is there a way to generate timer interrupts in C. Also can we enter into the protected mode of the CPU. Does OS (specifically, linux) place any restrictions on user programs entering protected mode. If it does not, do we just have an assembly language program which changed the mode, followed by the C code... I'm just trying to understand how things work at the lowest level. So I'm trying to write few snippets to test my understanding.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Pulse Audio Volume Controller: Stop It From Changing Settings?

Starting Skype and using it I see that the setting is reducing the volume for the mic below 20, so nobody can hear me. I tried closing first Volume Controller and then starting Skype, no matter the volume of the mic is reduced. How do I stop this behavior?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unclaimed Display Controller 82852/855 GM Integrated Graphics Device?

Jul 9, 2011

I really wanna use the OS. I wiped my laptop and installed it but I can't change my screen resolution (it's stuck at 1024 X 768 and my refresh rate is at 0 HZ) I tried installing a driver that was for both the i9xx and i8xx chipset family but it doesn't look like it helped anything. I want to be able to play World of Warcraft Wrath of The Lich King but when I try it the way the computer is now the the frame rate is really really slow. I also need to fix my audio because there's crackling that comes from the speakers often. I attached a screen shot of what I get when I enter the command: sudo lshw -c video Changing the resolution isn't the problem so much as the fact that I can't change the refresh rate from "0 HZ" to anything higher so that my game will play smoothly. I would also like to put compiz fushion on my laptop as well but I don't believe it will work unless I resolve this problem.

Fedora Networking :: Windows Sever 2k3 Domain Controller / Use Machine With Samba As Secondary Domain Controller?

Apr 28, 2009

At the school i work in i have a server2k3 server that provides a domain to all the windows clients, aswell as a fedora server that acts as an imaging machine and webserver.

Im rather concious of the fact that if for any reason the Server2k3 server was to die there is no backup of active directory, or anything that can take its place whilst a replacement is found.

So is it possible to use a fedora machine with samba as a secondary domain controller? so it can be used as a login server, and has a copy of AD.

As I understand, when the counter in the register overflows, an interrupt will be generated and handled by the appropriate interrupt handler. How can my user-level application get notified whenever the interrupt occurs? I want to obtain information on the instruction that caused the overflow. Is this possible? I think this is different than responding to signals with sigaction().

General :: Mask Local Timer Interrupts In User Space?

Oct 27, 2010

I am trying to figure out how to mask local timer interrupts on a specific core of a multicore system from within user space. The interrupts are causing latency spikes of 3-10u that we would like to remove. We are only running 1 thread on the core h everything shielded except for these timer interrupts. This thread makes no system calls and thus is never getting context switched out. I am not looking to turn them off entirely but rather turn them off, run my code, turn them on in a continuous loop. The thread runs in user space which we are hoping to maintain. We also have no desire to modify the kernel if possible. I've read about using spinlock_irqsave() but it appears (not positive) that it must be used within kernel space.

Software :: Clearing /Proc/Interrupts Counters Without Rebooting System

Dec 7, 2010

I have a question regarding the /proc/interrupts file. Let's say for example I had a server with 2xQuad-Core processors (so we have CPU0 to CPU7 ), and with 5 network interfaces. SMP affinity to all 5 interfaces was set to "ff", so all interfaces have done interrupts on all the processors. he network interfaces interrupts counters should look like this:

24: 32650776 32670506 50315017 32677739 32672119 32677935 32656299 32667496 IO-APIC-fasteoi eth2
27: 35233448 35285546 35317201 52657622 35315835 35339998 35221092 35246597 IO-APIC-fasteoi eth3
55: 37573056 35870363 35874607 35858010 37728061 35880275 35882340 35882127 PCI-MSI-edge eth1
56: 35861392 35863516 35865123 35865342 35864604 40515822 35861250 35863585 PCI-MSI-edge eth0
58: 30173318 30109146 30002990 30016870 30084937 30034759 46517278 30139103 PCI-MSI-edge eth4

Now let's say I've set the affinity to each of the network interfaces, so that it balances one per processor, so we have 5 processors working only for the network interfaces each processor with it's own eth. Now let's assume that the network interfaces generate very few interrupts, and that they show up every 5-6 seconds, so watching cat /proc/interrupts doesn't exactly underline the modifications unless you look with a ruler. Is there a way to reset the counters on /proc/interrupts so that they all start at 0, without rebooting the system?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 (64bit) System Temp Exceeding Acceptable Limits

Apr 9, 2011

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 (64bit) on my laptop (Toshiba satellite L300 64bit) and have since had horrible issues with the machine overheating. When the system is idle, the temp is decent, a bit warm maybe. If I start browsing the Internet, temp goes way up. I cant watch more than 1 and a half minutes of a ..... video without the system's temp exceeding acceptable limits, and shutting itself down. I have tried both the 32 bit and 64bit versions of ubuntu 10.10, as well as a 64bit version of 10.4. same overheating issues with all of these.

I am 99.999999 percent sure that it is an issue with my laptop's cooling fan, as although it appears to be spinning, it is so quiet that I would think it was off completely if I were to not tilt the laptop back and check to see if it is spinning. Also, the speed of the fan does not change, regardless of the machines temp. Even before it shuts off because of extremely high temps, the fan is still running at that same speed. I am currently downloading fedora 14, a different linux distro, to see if there is any difference.
