Ubuntu Multimedia :: What To Use For Secure Video Sharing?
May 7, 2010
I been having trouble using flipshare under winxp in vbox and was wondering if there's a good way to securely share HD videos with friends and family. I've scoured the web a little already, but then thought I'd see what other linux users use.

I am seeking for a secure and reliable mp3 and video player. For security reason, I'm reticent about Universe repository. Any way to get my MP3 player and my video player to work without having to resort the Universe repository? Preferably can play RMVB files.

I'm trying to install Plumi 3.0 or 3.1 (the newest versions) on my already working Plone instance (version 3.x) and just can't get it working, basicaly my question is whether it is even possible to install the new plumi as an ADD-ON product on existing plone site or is it obligatory to run it as a standalone Plumi/Plone instance and if, what is the procedure on debian/ubuntu. I've really spent a lot of hours on many linux machines and just can't get to the working Plumi instance.

We have a collection of music for the entire family. Can each user's Music folder point (for lack of a better word) to the same physical directory? Can I do this with mounts, or is there a better way?

Regardless of distribution, but not Windows, there would be this a/v computer that has a sound card and video card for which any other Linux computer would have access to these two devices. How do I achieve this mess?
I was primarily thinking of having a share on the a/v computer that would expose links to the sound card and video card for which the other computers could simply link to these devices. Does this sound kosher besides the conflict of concurrency?

I'm an Oracle DBA and started working for my current employer about 4 months ago. This past weekend an alert re: FS space brought my attention to /var/spool/clientmqueue (full of mail re: cron jobs) and the fact that sendmail is not running on our Linux servers.I'm told that the IT security team deemed sendmail too vulnerable so we don't run it.Aside from FS filling up and missing notification of issues with crontab entries, I'm concerned that we may be missing notification of potential issues. In other Unix/Linux environments I've seen emails from the print daemon when it experienced problems with specific jobs.
Are there other Linux facilities aside from cron and lpd that use email to advise the users of possible issues? Are there ways to secure sendmail or secure alternatives to sendmail? My primary need/desire is to make sure that emails regarding issues on the server get to the appropriate users. Secondary goal would be to have the ability to use mailx to send mail out. There is No need/desire to receive mail from outside.

I've been deploying a lot of Debian based OSs for the desktops. I recommend the users to upgrade after every 2 months; however as we all know upgrades have their own flaws and issues, many times an upgrade does cause a lot of problems.
I'm deploying the testing branch of Debian, reason being hardware compatibility issues with older kernel and drivers. My main concern is security, I don't want the users to have big security venerabilities over time which's a consequence of not upgrading, but upgrading too may break the system (partially maybe...).
I know there's an option to only do security upgrades, but this will require a repository refresh... the consequence of not upgrading after a repository update is that if you install software using software center.. or even using aptitude or apt, it's bound to give a lot of dependency issues which users wont like.
This's the second question -- installing new packages with an updated repository and an older system gives issues.

I want to watch a certain video on [url]...., but I get an error message instead. Some videos can be played, so I'm thinking it's a form of restriction, but I can't be sure.I tried using a few proxies, but on some the error message persists and on others the video doesn't load. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and Firefox 3.5.8.

When I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).
I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.
Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?

I have a video file in which the audio runs faster than the video, so they quickly go out of sync. The way to fix it would be to separate the audio and video streams, speed up the video (the audio is FINE, it's the video that's wrong), and then recombining them. What is the easiest way for doing that?

video playback is like I have applied a blueish sepia filter over it. And this is just the playback from totem player or mplayer, and not the playback from ..... (and generally online streaming) - this works just fine. this messy video playback also appears when I use cheese to capture video with my webcam. Note that the preview picture of the video file on nautilus has the natural colours it should have.
at first when I installed the os this particular problem didn't exist, but it came up the time I decided to follow the "comprehensive multimedia guide". So now I have all the pros of following the guide, but this is a major con...

this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

My system: Pentium 4 3.6 GHz, 3 Gb DDR ram, GeForce 210 video card, Ubuntu 10.04.
I have previously used Cinelerra-cv (on Karmic) and recently Openshot (on Lucid) with not much trouble. I have been sampling other video editors (Kdenlive, avidemux, kino etc). Now I have my video card crashing whichever I use, mainly when trying to load clips. I have disabled Compiz, uninstalled all video editors and then reinstalled one at a time. I still get early video crashes whichever I try.

I am setting up a MythTV environment to switch from Windows based MediaPortal (with a high number of disturbing bugs). Yet, I have three difficulties, which I want to discuss with you. They are:
- No audio via HDMI see [URL]
- Video resolution seems to change during video playback
- Channels cannot be found via DVB-S [URL]
As you can see, I have created three posts to keep discussions focused.
Alltogether I have the following setup:
- AMD 5050e CPU
- 8 GByte RAM
- Biostar TA890GXE
- Samsung LE40M86BD, connected via HDMI (and only HDMI)
- Mythbuntu 10.10 with proprietary drivers installed
- Technisat Skystar HD2 DVB-S card (two times)
Now, here is the problem:
Whenever I playback any video material using e.g. VLC, the screen resolution changes. This also applies when playback the video in a window and not fullscreen. The problem is that whenever the screen resolution changes, short time later the TV set blanks screen and show the TV set specific information "unsupported video mode".
How can I enforce to stay in the configured video mode?

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old Dell Dimension 8400 with an ATI RV370 Radeon X300 video card and 512MB of Ram. The video seems to go very fast and skips. I followed the Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto but still have the same issue. I have also read many posts but I have trouble understanding some of the responses. Could it be the low amount of RAM?

I have an integrated intel video and latest xserver-xorg-video-intel driver(using only stable repo). Now I wanna watch high-res video. From the bits of info collected from all over internet I understood that I need to:
1.aptitude install libdrm libva.
2.compile or find the .deb mplayer-vaapi and install it.
3.add -vo vaapi -va vaapi to the mplayer command line in gnome-mplayer.
My question : is that correct or did I miss something? Do I have to compile latest libdrm and libva or the ones from the squeeze repo will be good? Do I need kms enabled, i.e. install firmware-linux-nonfree?

OpenSUSE 11.1, 64 bit, 2 cores, intel graphics, 4 GB of RAM:_no_ problems
OpenSUSE 11.4, 64 bit, 4 cores, nvidia graphics, 16 GB of RAM:
Problem is very similar to: Problems playing mkv HD films in opensuse but not windows but with enough differences that I start a new thread:
* playback in VLC does not work -- there is only sound
* playback in SMplayer works, however -- when I scroll forward, the video freezes and sound continues, to unfreeze video I have scroll a tiny bit backward
I tried changing the video ouput driver (in SMplayer) from xv to xv/noveu-nvidia, it didn't help. Please note, that I use the same settings (initially) as before in OS11.1.

Anyone know the proper syntax in Mencorder to convert a video just to audio? Or any other program I can use that won't cause this much trouble?

I have a laptop and desktop both with basic installations of 9.10 (Karmic). And, they are networked with a Mac running OS X 10.6.2. Screen sharing simply worked right from the beginning, to and from the Mac, and of course to and from both Ubuntu installs.
Except there was no feedback from one Ubuntu desktop screen being shared. Mouse clicks, mouse movements, and keyboard presses all seemed to have their correct effects. It was just that the results were not fed back to the remote screen.
During troubleshooting, I de-activated (removed) the nVidia accelerated graphics driver (version 185) that had been installed with 9.10 (Karmic). Then screen sharing started to work with the proper feedback to the remote screen.
I tried the pre-upgrade nVidia driver (version 173) and again no feedback from the screen being shared. De-activate the driver and again screen sharing started to work with feedback.
The bottom line seems to be no nVidia proprietary drivers if I want remote screen sharing to work. But this desktop is primarily used as a HTPC with a HDTV monitor. No games. No 3D. Screen sharing is probably more important, but essentially what am I giving up in graphics capabilities by not using those nVidia drivers?

I'm getting random system hangs and display issues when using my computer with my nVidia graphics card. On a lark, i checked /proc/interrupts and noticed that the nvidia device is sharing an interrupt with one of my USB boards, as well as my integrated sound card. i managed to move my sound card by editing my alsa-base and adding:
Code: options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 This helps mostly, but i'm still getting intermittant issues. is there any way to shift the interrupt of my gfx card (or usb controller) to avoid this potential conflict? i know the devices should be able to co-exist, but i've seen several people having issues when an nVidia card shares interrupts.

Im considering buying a 2nd gen apple tv and using home sharing to load movies onto it from my computer. Im running Ubuntu 11.4 and using the latest version of Wine to use iTunes 10. iTunes runs decently fine w/ a couple of small bugs (screen turns temporarily black, laggy, etc.) so im okay with that. The real problem is that my music isnt playing at all. I mean i can load it onto itunes but i cant listen to it. Combine that with the lag and it can get a little irritating.even with the inability of listening to music and the lag in the program, would i be able to stream content to my aTV w/out any bugs or no. I dont want to watch or listen to any of that content on my computer, just on my aTV but I am wondering if this inability would affect the playback on the apple tv. I dont even want to sync any ipods or anything like that, just sync the aTV (if even needed) for setup and use home sharing to listen to music, watch movies and tv shows, etc. on my apple tv w/out any frame rate drops or hitches or anything like that.
