Running Ubuntu 10.04 with an Acer wide monitor, 1600x900. The graphics card is a Gefoce 6200. When I run nvidia-settings I can select 1600-900 and it looks fine. I can "Save to X configuration file" and get no errors. However if I log out and back in, the resolution changes to 1360x768 which causes the tool bar at the top to be mostly somewhere to the left of and above the monitor. It makes life rather difficult when you can't get to the Applications and Places menus. I also tried nvidia-configure but it created essentially the same xorg.conf file.

1600x900 is the native mode of this monitor so the driver shouldn't be getting any errors if it trys to set that resolution.
I like Linux.
I like OpenGL.
I don't like X.
On Linux, is there anyway to get 3D acceleration from my Nvidia card without X? Ideally, I'd have the kernel boot, get to a console, then somehow get into a "graphics mode", where my entire monitor is just a single OpenGL screen ... and I draw stuff to it with OpenGL. Without X.
My problem started with the following post.[URL]I ended up tracing the issue back to openGL that disappeared during an update and the nvidia driver had broken. The only remaining issue is that the 3D acceleration on the NVIDIA (GeForce 8600 GT) card will not activateURL]hich I have done many times now. I am now on the nvidia-173 driver as that one seems to be working the best. Even the nvidia-settings is having trouble and crashes when I try to look at the OPENGL/GLX information.I have found many instances of jockey showing that the driver is "active but not in use" which is what I am seeing. The problem is that the 3D acceleration is not working and the issue seems to be the driver.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm doing an install for a friend, the machine is a Gateway with AMD Turion64. The install required the 64 bit version of Lucid 10.04 RC. When I try to install the NVIDIA hardware driver, upon reboot, it flickers, fails, and tells me to use low-setting graphics mode.

I am sure I missing something from my xorg.conf but at this point I am not sure what I have been searching on this for days to no avail. From the log the only thing that looks like is a problem is it doesn't load the keyboard and mouse but it gets loaded later on in the file.
Sound should be easy. Far more easy than video, but i experience more problems with sound, than with my Nvidia GFX-card.It seems OpenSUSE use several type of sound-systems like Alsa-sound, Pulseaudio and OSS. Then its somthing called Xine and GStream that i've never heard about.I have OpenSUSE 11.3 64bits with KDE4.6.1What should i use and what can i uninstall?Now it seems i'm using PulsAudio with Xine-backend.

Am using ACER Aspire 5745G which has switchable graphics. I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal i updated everything after the installation. Now the issue is that when i go to NVIDIA X Server Settings, its giving me an error message:- " You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. " Error.jpg also tried searching in the forum but it was so confusing, as am Newbie i have no idea where to start.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running a three-monitor setup, two of the monitors being connected to an NVIDIA card, and the third being connected to the motherboard's onboard ATI adapter. This works, and it actually works quite well, but after installing the nvidia-current drivers (using the GNOME dialog), I am unable to get any video acceleration going. The GLX module doesn't seem to want to load, and while I'm actually quite impressed with the video performance I'm getting with the open-source drivers, I'd really like to have the OpenGL capability, as it does make things look prettier.

I should clarify - I don't care about the 3rd monitor on the ATI adapter; I'm only concerned with getting OpenGL working on the two on the NVIDIA - if that's possible, which it may not be...

I am piecing a Mandelbrot generator up, I have one working to produce a 1,500 x 1,500 picture (which is fairly accurate).
I would like to increase the resolution over 100,000 x 100,000 + (into the millions x millions).
How I can achieve this? What kind of buffer sizes do I need?
(note this code doesnt have any memory allocations yet)

My screen resolution on windows was 1600x900
But on ubuntu (even after installing proprietary drivers) the highest I can get is 1024x768 .
I tried using xandr but couldn't work it out .

I hooked up Lucid to a 50" and adjusted the resolution to the max. Gives a clearer sharper picture but all the displayed items are tiny. Is there something I need to do that I haven't? I went from 1086x720 to 1400(approx)x900(approx) and created the problem. Now I'm back at 1086x720. I'm using the Nvidia 195 drivers.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been playing around with Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop for quite a while now, and this is the first time I've been downright stumped. To make a long story short, I'm trying to play 480p video on a machine with a 233 MHz Pentium processor, 112 MB of ram, and a Neomagic MagicGraph 128XD graphics card (NM2160). Crazy? Maybe, but I don't think so. I'm using MPlayer set to Xv mode with the XFree86 4.3.0 server, and so far, I've been able to get it to play 360p mpegs with minimal stuttering. However, MPlayer crashes with 480p. This is because the 128XD only has 2 MB of memory, which, after the 1024x768x16 screen takes its share, doesn't leave enough room for a 640x480 overlay.
The creators of MPlayer are aware of this limitation, and suggest adding the following line to my XF86Config file: Option "OverlayMem" "829440"
As I understand it, this is supposed to extend the video card's frame buffer into system memory, thus allowing the higher resolution video to play. However, it doesn't work, based on this output from my XFree86 log file: cannot reserve 829440 bytes for overlay...

I reinstalled my computer with Ubuntu 10.10 and the resolution was fine. I turned off my computer last night and when I turned it on today it's back to everything being huge and the screen resolution being 640 x 480. Then when I try to change it, it says my video card isn't supported. All I want to do is revert back to my stock video card in my computer and remove the nvidia one since obviously ubuntu isn't working with it.

Preferences -> Monitor Settings (lxrandr) does not change anything & does not show my desired resolution either. I tried using the Nvidia propietary drivers but whenever I try to switch to them from xorg.conf the X display can't start. right now I am using the nouveau driver. I've seen some xrandr commands but so far haven't been able to figure out what I need to do.

I have an old video card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT, which is now beginning to fail and I need to upgrade. I am not huge a gamer but I do play/buy games on regular basis. I recently switched from jessie to stretch on both i encountered a jerky ui in gnome 3. after a longer research i noticed xorg consumes over 80% of my first cpu-core while moving a window. for testing purposes i switched back to the nouveau driver and there is no high cpu usage while moving a window, also the ui is smooth.
i tried 3 different nvidia driver: the one from the debian repository, the current stable and beta driver from the nvidia site. i noticed on all 3 the same problem.

All of the videos on tennistv are flash. The pre-recorded videos seem to play okay using iceweasel and flashplugin-nonfree but the CPU is very high. When she watches live streamed matches the video stalls and jumps, so I have been trying to figure out why. Tennistv support people say that Linux isn't supported and that streaming is "harder" but don't explain why. They suggested using Google chrome, which did seem to work as well as iceweasel but no better. In desparation I tried XP and it was much better and uses much less CPU.
The only difference I could think of was that flash video hardware acceleration works by default in XP, so I started reading up on Flash video acceleration for linux. The latest Adobe flash player releases appear to support video acceleration, but it's switched off by default. So I upgraded to the latest version and did and then restarted iceweasal if you right click on a flash video you can set hardware acceleration in a tick box, but that seems to be there whether the above is config file is there or not there isn't a live tennis match on again until June 6th. How can I tell if hardware acceleration is actually working or not? The PC is has a 3GHz CPU and 1G RAM. Seems nuts that it can't play video properly. Its a Dell SX280.
I've been trying to get hardware acceleration (Direct Rendering) working on my system without success. I'm not even sure if my card supports DR or not, my searchs haven't turned up a result for this question. I don't know if its the video card, nvidia packages or bad configurations. Any help with the diagnosis?

I have installed the Nvidia drivers on my desktop using [URL] according to the Debian way. Everything seems to be fine except the resolution. The best it will let me choose is something like 600x480. I have searched and most of what is suggested around the web is to change xorg.conf. I have tried this using different setting suggested but nothing is working. I did not have a xorg.conf file so I created one with the setting suggested on the Debian wiki.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit with a GTS 250. After installing the restricted driver from NVIDIA's website I get stuck at a 640x320 resolution. The only other option I get is 320x240. The resolution I need is 1680x1050.
I've also encountered this problem with a 9600GT.
Dont know how to explain this properly but in some forums on the net, no matter what text colour i change its always very light in colour. How can I change this so that the text is black as in when typing here for eg? its not the actual setting of the forum as I have looked through it thoroughly.

Unfortunately, the nvidia-settings dialog does not have this resolution as an option (currently running on 1920x1080). The graphics card is Geforce 6200 (should support the wanted resolution), and the monitor is connected with the VGA cable (if that matters).

View 5 Replies View RelatedSince I upgraded to 9.04 a while back I have had this annoying screen resolution issue. Every time I log into my Ubuntu system the screen resolution defaults to 1280x1024. My preferred desktop resolution is normally set at 1680x1050. So each time I log in I have to open the Nvidia control panel and manually set the screen resolution to 1680x1050. Even after logging out it will still go right back to 1280x1024 when I log back in.
But the funny this is I am almost positive the login screen resolution is 1680x1050 because the picture is crisp unlike the blurry and distorted picture at 1028x1024. I have tried everything from manually editing the x.org conf file to running the Nvidia control panel as root. Nothing saves my preferred resolution of 1680x1050. My Nvidia driver is version 190.42 and Ubuntu version is 9.04. The monitor is an ASUS VW192T+ which is detected by the Nvidia driver.
Ubuntu 10.04, nVidia GeForce 9400, driver ver 195.36.15.When I log in, the system always comes up in 800x600 mode. I went into the NVIDIA X Server Settings page and changed it to my preferred setting of 1152x864. I hit Apply, then Save to X Configuration File (with correct root password).All is well until restarting. Then it reverts back. The update doesn't stick. How can I make this the permenant setting?
