I don't like X.
On Linux, is there anyway to get 3D acceleration from my Nvidia card without X? Ideally, I'd have the kernel boot, get to a console, then somehow get into a "graphics mode", where my entire monitor is just a single OpenGL screen ... and I draw stuff to it with OpenGL. Without X.
Unable to get high res, colour or 3-D acceleration working with 8.04 Hardy. Not a hardware problem as it works perfectly in dual-boot XP.

I have a Slackware 13.1/64-current system running the 2.6.35.6 kernel that I have installed the most recent nvidia drivers for (as of yesterday or day before) 260.19.12. If I boot up into run level 4 after running nvidia-xconfig in a console and run glxinfo as root I get:

I am sure I missing something from my xorg.conf but at this point I am not sure what I have been searching on this for days to no avail. From the log the only thing that looks like is a problem is it doesn't load the keyboard and mouse but it gets loaded later on in the file.
I am in the process of building a new desktop machine for work and fun. I am looking to run a undecided flavor of Linux (guessing Ubuntu) as my primary OS and several Windows installs with a Windows 7 install for .net development and gaming as virtualized environments.
From my previous experiences with virtualization software in Linux I was never able to find an application that offered descent video card support / graphic acceleration etc. to be capable of playing any games within one of the virtualized environments. And since I will be investing quite a bit of money into this system for gaming I would naturally want to find the best option available to achieve this setup.
So Onto my question: Is there any virtualization software available for Linux that has full video card support, graphic acceleration and capable of taking advantage of everything the video cards have to offer within the virtualized environments?
Or am I stuck with running Windows 7 as my primary OS and using virtualization for Linux and the other OS's?
Also I have no preference on open/closed source and price range would be up to $175.00 to support at least 3 virtualized environments.
I am installing the Nvidia proprietary module to get 3D acceleration. The system boots into gnome (fedora 11) nicely. When I go to console init 3 (shutdown X) to install the Nvidia native driver the console is all garbled. the monitor is fully polluted with random alphanumeric characters, different colors, quite pretty actually but cannot get out of it.. The fedora driver is nouveau. GPU is GeForce 8500. I get the same from a fedora dist. (2.6.30-10-105.2.23.fc11.i586) and linux distrbution (2.6.32.13)

The only remaining issue is that the 3D acceleration on the NVIDIA (GeForce 8600 GT) card will not activateURL]hich I have done many times now. I am now on the nvidia-173 driver as that one seems to be working the best. Even the nvidia-settings is having trouble and crashes when I try to look at the OPENGL/GLX information.I have found many instances of jockey showing that the driver is "active but not in use" which is what I am seeing. The problem is that the 3D acceleration is not working and the issue seems to be the driver.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running a three-monitor setup, two of the monitors being connected to an NVIDIA card, and the third being connected to the motherboard's onboard ATI adapter. This works, and it actually works quite well, but after installing the nvidia-current drivers (using the GNOME dialog), I am unable to get any video acceleration going. The GLX module doesn't seem to want to load, and while I'm actually quite impressed with the video performance I'm getting with the open-source drivers, I'd really like to have the OpenGL capability, as it does make things look prettier.

I should clarify - I don't care about the 3rd monitor on the ATI adapter; I'm only concerned with getting OpenGL working on the two on the NVIDIA - if that's possible, which it may not be...

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhile installing XBMC, which was working with my standard Ubuntu install, I accidentally installed NVidia hardware acceleration (sudo apt-get install libvdpau1 nvidia-185-libvdpau) on a notebook with ATI video.
Now XBMC does not work and says it requires OpenGL. apt-get remove does not work for that package because it's transitional. how I can get my stuff working like it was?
I try enable "glamor" acceleration" instead of SNA on my system (Debian Stretch KDE) ..but for me doesn't works.

I'm a Fedora 12 user on an HP Pavilion dv4 laptop. I'm currently using kernel 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.x86_64, graphics driver xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.9.1-1.fc12.x86_64, and mesa 7.7-4. My graphics card is an Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07).
I've been having some problems getting my 3D acceleration to work. Although it worked correctly in Fedora 11, I have not been able to get it to work yet in Fedora 12.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running hardware already considered legacy and I was made painfully aware that those drivers, for ATI cards, are only available from Jessie repositories; yet, somehow I was able to have my system configured to run not the stock drivers the system used for installation but, allegedly, proprietary drivers.
I did notice an overall improvement on how the system displays everything on the screen but after fumbling around the system trying to install a game I had a message warning that only software acceleration was activated and not full hardware acceleration, which was what I was aiming at.
After going through a lot of guides on the web I was able to:
a) discover the system is running MESA drivers (or so I have understood)
b) install headers for my system but somehow along the way I fumbled whatever I was doing and I probably now have a lot of loose ends in the system
Being Debian (and rock solid) the system is still running smoothly but I really want to clean up after myself and correct what I can and improve where is possible.
The freeze's on my machine only appears when i monitor the temperature of
the gpu. Normally i use gkrellm to monitor temperatures including the gpu temperature. When i stop gkrellm there a no more freeze's on my system. Then i started nvdock which also monitor the gpu temperature and the freeze's are back. Stopping nvdock make the system working normally. I have done a few reboots now, warm and also cold starts und everything works normal.

I have an old video card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT, which is now beginning to fail and I need to upgrade. I am not huge a gamer but I do play/buy games on regular basis. Right now I'm playing Eternal Lands on the Linux side. Looking to spend $100-$150 on a new card.I have a Core2Duo Wolfdale 3.0, with 2ghz ram and run Lucid 32bit. I would love to buy a new ATI 5770 or 5830, ATI budget cards seem to be much better for the buck over budget Nvidia cards, but I'm concerned with ATI drivers and long term with Ubuntu.On the Nvidia side I'm considering the GTS 250. I can't figure out how to install the nvidia drivers for my nvidia 8800 GT video card. I've followed some other posts and all the posts seemed either incomplete, or led me down a path of which eventually broke my installation, that I needed to reinstall the entire ubuntu system.Again, it may not have been broken, i just didnt know how to get back in to the gui version of ubuntu, the instructions took me to the console terminal

Only about 1.5 weeks into Linux guys so bear with me. I'm trying to uninstall the Nouveau driver and install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.14-pkg1.run for my old Nvidia TNT2 card. Following these directions I run into a problem in the first step. When I execute the Ctrl+Alt+F1 command and get:

I'm trying to install the drivers for my nvidia graphics card. I downloaded the shell script from the nvidia website. However, there's something peculiar going on. When I execute the shell script it says it cannot find my kernel headers, yet I can verify that my /usr/include/linux/kernel.h does exist. I have selinux on, but just installed os with it on, so contexts are fresh. Checked them as well. After doing some research I found something out. When I run a 'uname -a' I get this.

I see that the error in the nvidia shell script can't locate the header files for the RUNNING kernel version which makes sense. Why would yum install that version instead of the one in 'uname -a'? Or am I misunderstanding something?
How is OpenGL support (specifically OpenGL 3.x) in the different video card drivers available for Linux?Assuming that the hardware supported it well, would the drivers be an issue?

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhat means there exists to have three monitors, all controlled by Xmonad and have hardware 3D acceleration as well? I had the pleasure of using three monitors earlier this year, and while Xmonad and Xinerama handle three monitors easily, I had to throw in an extra display driver, and also let go of Nvidia's own TwinView (which is a hack on Xinerama). This left me with no HW acceleration and some flickering as double buffering wouldn't work with certain applications. However, the three monitors handle so beautifully that I had hard time coming back to two. I understand the easiest way to achieve HW-accelerated tri-head combo is to split into two Xorgs.
I wouldn't be able to switch windows between the Xorgs, so I'm not really into this solution. What's more, having a cheap and old PCI card along with even slightly better PCIe seemed to slow things down. Even if I occasionally disabled the third monitor from Xorg configure, I couldn't get HW acceleration to work. Only after I physically disconnected the old PCI card, I could get the games back in business. Would a Matrox Dual/Tri-head2go and a powerful Nvidia GPU do the trick? I understand Xmonad can be configured to "believe" that a "single" (as Dualhead2Go will merge) 3360x1050 display is actually two different ones? So that Xmonad's Mod-w and Mod-e would work properly there.

Hopefully I'll get an answer this time.I am tired of mouse acceleration and want to have a completely linear mouse response. This is easily achievable through any of the 5 or so methods (some subtly implied) on the X.Org wiki page on pointer acceleration. However, they also disable velocity scaling.I don't want a 1:1 mapping between device and screen coordinates. I want a 1:N mapping where N is a constant.

When I do a search of my video card I get "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF", which is the integrated card on the motherboard, but I'm actually using an Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 400.
