Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Install Missing Wine ALSA Driver
Aug 6, 2010
Whenever I try to run a windows game under Wine I get an error that depict I have no proper sound driver. I checked the wine config and there was only OSS option that I think it would not help me to get sound working. I think I have to use Alsa Instead but I don't know how to add Alsa support to wine. By the way in need DirectSound as well. should i download it myself and add it to system32 or there is a better way?
I use:
ubuntu (Meerkat) 10.10
wine 1.2

I am attempting to install the Linuxant ALSA driver to make my sound work properly (speakers muting when headphones plugged in). This worked on Lucid, but on Maverick the installation fails at the "building modules" stage. It directs me to a logfile, which I have reproduced here:
Code:
rm -f .depend *.o snd.map*
rm -f modules/*.o modules/*.ko
rm -f *~ out.txt *.orig *.rej .#* .gdb_history
rm -f doc/*~
rm -f config.cache config.log config.status Makefile.conf
rm -f utils/alsa-driver.spec .....
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.35-22-generic'
make: *** [compile] Error 2
The package partially installed I have no sound at all. I have kernel headers and every related -dev package I can think of installed. I'm running 64-bit; could that be an issue?

I've never had any problems before, but I just did a fresh install of 10.04.1 on a brand new drive yesterday. I noticed this morning that I have no sound drivers(under the hardware tab of sound preferences, there is nothing listed). I found a thread that had this line to run:
Code:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
And I got:
Code:
Codec: Realtek ALC888
Not sure what to do now though.

I was having issues with the mic or line in on my onboard sound card, while trying to get my tvtuner patched in, later I gave OSS a try, I could not get it to work and decided to go back to Alsa, now my soundcard is not functioning.I have followed quite a few different guides, one of which is the sticky, please forgive me for not remembering which guides. I'm going nuts over this.As you can see below it looks like it is still using the oss driver.
uname -a
Linux freekbox 2.6.31-21-generic #59-Ubuntu SMP Wed Mar 24 07:28:56 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I don't have any sound after installing Linuxant ALSA driver. I tried uninstalling it and the hsf driver, didn't help. Reinstalling ALSA didn't help either. Ubuntu doesn't detect my sound card, and aplay doesn't detect my sound card. lspci -v output for sound card:
Code:

Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device 0126

I have also posted this as a question in ubuntu launchpad but I figure I have more of a chance coming across a solution this way- as I had been struggling with no sound issue (and other issues for so long now!) I first had alsa driver version that came with this 2.6.32-25 preempt kernel: ALSA driver 1.0.22, I believe. My maudio soundcard was detected but I couldn't get sound so I found a suggestion in ubuntu forum to install lucid backports. This created 2.6.32-25 generic kernel which I didn't want since I need low latency (and still had no sound). I tried at first to compile and install Alsa driver 1.0.23 (following Ubuntu Sound Troubleshooting Guide), having booted into the preempt kernel- but ALSA driver 1.0.23 only installed into the generic backport kernel. So I proceeded to remove the 2.6.32-25 backport generic kernel via synaptic.
I once again only have my original preempt kernel 2.6.32.25 and 2.6.32.21 in my grub list. I discovered that I had no soundcard detected and no more ALSA installed, according to 'aplay -l' & 'cat /proc/asound/version' 'cat: /proc/asound/version: No such file or directory' so I proceeded to try to install Alsa driver 1.0.23 twice more but each time I get:
'bash alsa-info.sh --stdout
cat: /proc/asound/version: No such file or directory
grep: /proc/asound/cards: No such file or directory
cat: /proc/asound/cards: No such file or directory
cat: /proc/asound/modules: No such file or directory

I have a problem when i use the Nvidia driver and the latest version of Xorg (1.9.4) on Debian Sid. In fact, when i minimise a window (Nautilus, console or Chromium/Iceweasel), i see the window's black border and it's very slowly when i minimize or maximize it. I don't know how to explain correctly so i tried to take a screenshot :
In this screenshot, you can see the black border. I haven't this problem if i use the free driver for my Nvidia but i can't to play with wine I tried with the driver on experimental repositories or the driver on Nvidia Website.

I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with, amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.
..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.

Having had many problems with pulseaudio on a fresh karmic install, I followed some recommended instructions for removing pulse and using alsa (URL...). unfortunately, both pulse and alsa have gone and i'm left with oss which seems to work fine. I'd like to have alsa back though. When I open amarok, it plays the frst song on the playlist then pops up a series of 'could not initialise sound engine' messages, and crashes.

Just wondering if this is possible? Total n00b with linux, this is my *thinking* 3rd week using Ubuntu 9.10. And I am using my system for surfing the web, listen to music, video`s and chatting. And I got the "funny" tough`t of trying to maybe play World of Warcraft again on this computer. Yes I have run it before when I had XP and W7 on it. The w7 experience on this computer was a bad mistake. So yeah, the thing I am really wondering on is this: Wine, WoW with WoTLK ( Wrath of the Lich King ), with the newest Open Source ATI graphic driver?[URL].. According to that page (you have to Ctrl-F and "Open source ATI drivers" to find the what I mean ) it is possible, but I am wondering on how to do it?[URL].. and been reading on different sites that you can play games with wine in a new X. Curious on how that can be done, and if that MAYBE is the best thing to do with my Wow game. Havent installed it YET, thinking of downloading the web installer after this post. If the moderators should find this is the wrong place for this to be asked, move it to the "Wine" section, if its better placed there.

I'm still a bit green at Linux - not enough that the terminal scares me, but I still need to figure out with my 'networking' which programs do what. I'm still newly switched from Windows (though I've had a love affair with Linux live OSes for everytime I'm in between Windows OSes) and finally made the switch to Ubuntu. I have Wine installed for windows programs, and recently got a bit frustrated with OO Base, and went to install Microsoft Access (which I have training with) and while trying to figure out my install, Wine tells me it doesn't have any programs that read the 'autorun.inf' file. A little google fu tells me I kinda need an .inf reader for autorunning cds, dvds and the like. Anyone know where I can get the file? I tried to go through the Windows site and get the drivers downloaded for it, but I've hit a dead end.

I have just reinstalled 10.10. I used the alternate version since I had to add a fake raid Windows install. Ubuntu is on a OCZ SSD (very nice )
Install went fine. Update went fine (a bit over 300MB of updates) and everything looked as it should.
Then I installed the restricted Nvidia drivers for my GTX275 card and then gnome suddenly looks like the attached screenshot. I have tried to change theme and the colour of the top bar changes but that is that. No icon changes etc.
I have updated to the latest 270.18 drivers but the problem is still the same.

I have a Realtek ALC262 sound card, using the ALSA-1.0.20 driver, when I load the driver module manually using the command "modprobe snd-hda-intel model=basic", the card can work correctly, but I do not know how to modify the config file "modules.conf" or others to add the model type, so that the driver module can be load automaticly when the computer is startup, anyone knows that?

I am really fedup from playing .mpg (1080i) videos on linux. I tried to use smplayer or vlc but the video plays so poor, I got like scales (lines) on the video like on the screenshot embedded below (the screenshot I found on the net).
When I play the same video on windows 7 its so great with windows media player 12, when I play it with smplayer or vlc on windows 7 I got the same performance like in linux, its like windows media player has its own mpg hardware accelerator!

My Compaq Presario F700 laptop has Conexant HD-Audio SmartAudio 221 (checking from my Windows partition). I had everything working just fine until yesterday when I attempted to manually install an alsa-linux package that I downloaded sometime ago. Although the .deb package failed to install, it seems it messed things up and now there's no sound. The speaker icon shows "All mute" and I have no clue how to fix this. How do I 'unmute' it?

I have a TV tuner card with its output connected to the CD in of an integrated sound card. Video is OK, and the sound also gets thorough (to the line out) when running xawtv, for example. However, I found no ways yet for recording it.I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with ALSA drivers. Pulseaudio was running in the beginning, now it doesn't, but it doesn't seem to make much difference.
capturing with VLC, using plughw:0,0 as the audio capture device. (Result: no sound track at all in the resulting video.)arecord, then aplay.alsamixer. The capture source is set to "CD" (and on the input side it's also "CD" where I can effectively modify the volume for audio going through...), but still no result.

I've installed both fluidsynth and qsynth, but get this error everytime I run qsynth. I'm trying to use my m-audio keyrig 49 just to practice playing the piano. I don't really care about having a whole DAW and whatever, I just want to play my keyboard. Maybe there is a better way than qsynth? Also, this happens:
Code:
/etc/rc.d/rc.alsa restart
Loading ALSA mixer settings: /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
No state is present for card K49
[code]....
I don't know that it has to do with my qsynth problem or not. I just thought I'd throw it in just in case it does. Also, xmms recognizes my keyboard in the alsa preferences, where the mixer device is.

I'm currently using Ubuntu 10.10 and the version of Wine in the standard repository. In the past, when I've installed wine, it automatically gave me a Programs menu from which I could launch all the Windows programs I installed. That menu is now missing.I tried uninstalling Wine, removing the ~/.wine folder, and removing all references to wine and wine programs in ~/.local/share... with no effect.can't get the Programs menu to come back.
