View 5 RepliesI just installed Cable internet in my apartment. Part of the deal was a free Router (a Belkin). Now I already had a router so now I have an extra, and I remembered something I wanted to try If I ever got an extra router.... I read somewhere, that you can replace the firmware of the Linksys WRT54G Router/Switch with a Linux-based firmware.
I want to try this, but I have some concerns. I'm worried about losing my WPA2 Encryption, and connection problems; I have two Linux laptops (Ubuntu, and Fedora 64 bit) which connect Wirelessly, a desktop w/ 64 Bit Fedora 10, and two Vista Desktops that connect via Ethernet. Will the multiple Operating Systems cause a problem?
I am running Fedora 13 and I have a linksys WRT54G wireless router [1,2]. I'm having a strange problem. I'm using a computer connected to the router via a wired connection. At intermittent moments the connection seems to stop. I can't even ping the router (192.168.1.1). However, if I make NetworkManager reconnect to eth0 the connection immediately comes back and I can ping the router and navigate to websites. If I wait a random amount of time the connection also seems to comes back on its own (without reconnecting via NetworkManager). Any idea if this is a hardware (router) problem or a software problem? This didn't happen a month ago.
P.S: I have already updated to the latest firmware (Ver.8.00.8).[URL]..
1. My Lunix Desktop is connected via a cable to a port in the LINKSYS WRT54G (my Desktop does not have a wireless card).
2. My EPSON WORKFORCE 600 also is connected via cable to port in the LINKSYS WRT54G.
3. how do I setup Linux Desktop to print on my ESPON WORKFORCE 600?
Situation is a cable modem and a Belkin F5D8235 Wireless-N router (and a computer) are at one end of the property. Approx 150-200 ft away I want to put 3 desktop computers none of which have a wireless card or device. I DO have a Linksys WRT54G I'm not using.I want to hardwire the 3 desktop computers to a switch that is hard wired to the Linksys. Putting a wireless card in one of the 3 computers is not practical because of physical obstructions (a lot of cabinetry, furniture, walls) that the Linksys (which can be at the window) would not have to deal with.
Is it possible for the Linksys to 'receive' the wireless signal from the Belkin so the 3 desktops can share the internet? If not, what could I put in the window to 'receive' or 'repeat' the wireless signal?I know this isn't exactly a Ubuntu question, except that 2 of the 3 computers are 64bit Lucid.

I've got a Linksys WRT54G v5 router with the latest (1.02.8) firmware. I have two boxes running Slackware 13.1 (one is 32bit, the other 64bit). Both boxes have Linksys WMP54G wireless cards. I run an ssh daemon on both of them so I can access them to transfer files, etc. I am able to ssh from one to the other. But eventually when I try to do it, ssh will complain "no route to host." Rebooting the router immediately fixes the problem. Both of them can still access the Internet, etc., even if they can't reach each other.
As an aside, transfers between the two boxes can be painfully slow--certainly no where near the theoretical maximum. I looked at switching to DD-WRT, but the instructions seemed to be far more difficult than they would be worth. If nobody has a good solution, is there are reasonably-priced wireless router that you would recommend?
Downloaded Red Eclipse 1.1 file redeclipse_1.1_all.tar.bz2 Cannot find instructions to install it on fedora 15 64.bit. Can someone point me in the right direction, or give info on how to install.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWell I downloaded an ATI driver, and there are some installation instructions:
Launch the Terminal Application/Window and navigate to the ATI CatalystTM
Proprietary Linux driver download. Enter the command sh ./ati-driver-installer-10-6-x86.x86_64.run to launch the ATI CatalystTM Proprietary Linux driver installer. The ATI CatalystTM Proprietary Linux Driver Setup dialog box is displayed.
My result:
marek@marek-desktop:~$ sh ./ati-driver-installer-10-6-x86.x86_64.run
sh: Can't open ./ati-driver-installer-10-6-x86.x86_64.run
I bought this adapter today but my computer running on Ubuntu 9.10 doesn't recognize the CD.
How do I get this work?
I dual boot on separate HHDs. I have just done a fresh install with updates. I installed the restricted driver from the repositories, and I get an error message from ati catalyst (administration). Also I have "unsupported hardware" at the bottom of the screen.
Graphics card is a XFX ATI HD 5770 on this system, and I just sold 2 8800 GT's yesterday, and bought two more XFX HD 5770's for CF in my other system.
I didn't do a bad thing, 'cause I was really groovin' on Ubuntu, that I just installed at the beginning of the week.
i'm trying to install the pyirrlicht module. I have irrlicht already there but the python module has no install instructions and even less of a help forum.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire One with an SSD for storage. I recently installed Ubuntu on it and chose ext4 for my filesystem. Then I read that journaling on an SSD isn't the best idea, so I will try to disable journaling and I have found these intstructions [URL]..
# Create ext4 fs on /dev/sda10 disk mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda10 # Enable writeback mode. This mode will typically provide the best ext4 performance. tune2fs -o journal_data_writeback /dev/sda10
# Delete has_journal option
tune2fs -O ^has_journal /dev/sda10
# Required fsck
e2fsck -f /dev/sda10

I will use them on my boot partition. Are there any particularly bad parts here, or are there any missing steps? Will my boot partition be fit for being on an SSD after this? Or should I consider switching to ext2, or even reinstall it all and choose ext2 at partitioning time (I'd rather not though, since I've configured quite some stuff already)?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got a Linksys WRT54G v2.2 and a SmartAX MT882 modem I can connect to the Internet by connecting a Ethernet cable from the computer to the router but not wirelessly. I did the following to get it setup from my computer, can anyone see what I may have missed? Now connect the MT882 Ethernet cable directly into one of the WRT54G's LAN ports. Now once the computers are connected they will ask for an IP address and the WRT54G will forward them to the MT882's DHCP server for an address and thus you will get multiple computers through wireless connected to the MT882 and the Internet.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 4 linux nat firewall boxes on 4 seperate networks all plugged into one WRT54G with the wireless function disabled. The WAN port is DHCP to my ISP modem (comcast.) WRT54G is set to gateway mode. WRT54G is not handing out IP's to clients, DHCP set to disable. Modem is a bridge and hands out dynamic internet routable ip addresses. All 4 linux boxes eth0 are static ip's and go to the WRT54g. Each Linux box is a dhcp nat firewalled router to my clients. Problem: DNS is not being resolved to my ISP from my clients. I can ping from a client to any where on the net or through my system. Tried placing the ISP DNS numbers in the /etc/resolv.conf file of servers but did not work.
Question does the WRT54G nat translate the ISP's DNS numbers also and to what? If so placing those numbers in the /etc/resolv.conf might solve the issue. Last bit of info. On one system there is 32 clients using win7 and dhcp. Some clients can surf all the time. Some never, some intermitently. IF I restart the server the above will applies to different clients. The same thing happens on the other 3 server systems. Attaching the Linux box directly to the modem and setting eh0 to DHCP I have no problems. I know it's not the linux boxes. It's placing the WRT54G between the modem and the Linux box that creates the loss of DNS resolution.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux, have been somewhat of a computer geek my whole life and thought it about time that I delved into the world of linux. So I installed ubuntu 10.04 on my computer. I love it. However, I can't get my wireless to work. In my dorms there are no ethernet hookups, so I have to use the wireless. I typed "sudo lshw -class network" into the root terminal. The important things that I figured out was the bus info: pci@0000:4:06.0 and the pysical id: 6 (not sure if the physical id is important but it sounds like it is). I then did a lspci and found that at bus 04:06.0 it is a RaLink Device 3060. I downloaded the .tar file for the driver. I could not find instructions for it online so I followed the ones for the rt2860 driver : [URL].... I could not get it to work, It built ok and installed ok, but when I do the modprobe I get an error saying the device or resource is busy. Either that or that it cannot be found. One thing that I found weird was that I couldn't get it to build a 3060 driver, it would only build a 3562 one.
