View 7 RepliesOn a Dell 14n, 10.04. Mic problem: To use the mic jack/external mic, I need to have MIC 3 selected at SYSTEM/PREFERENCES/SOUND/INPUT To use the built in mic, I need to have MIC 1 selected
How can I get these mic's to work w/o having to change the settings each time I want to switch mic's.. so that if the mic jack is plugged in, then the external mic works. and if the mic jack is unplugged, then the built in mic works.
i installed Ubuntu 10.10 yesterday, and cannot find the answer to my question. I have a whole music library of mp3's on a secondary drive that I want to use in Rhythmbox. However, in Rhythmbox's Music Player Preferences I can't get either the Library Location to change from "Multiple locations set" or the Preferred format to "CD, Lossy mp3".
When I go into Edit>Preferences>Music, where it says "Multiple locations set", it is greyed over (I think that's the term. You can't access it.) When I go into the Preferred format, mps isn't there, but it does show up in another window when I click on edit; however, the only options I have there are 'Close' and 'Help'. The help button brings up another window and syas its loading, but stays in a loading mode forever.
In [URL] I can right-click on a flash video and have the option to access "local settings" under "Settings" to specify configuration for webcam, mic, etc. But in Facebook I need to adjust a setting and the "Setting" option for local config is gray-ed out, I can't access it.
I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4, and I've seen this in GNOME and KDE within Firefox.
When I go to change the Visual Effects settings from Normal to either of the other 2 choices, the screen goes black and nothing happens. Could this be a driver issue? Should I buy a video card instead of using on-board and if so, which ones work the best with Ubuntu?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI really, really like Banshee and I really, really don't want to use gtkpod or rythmbox
Overview:I have a 5th gen video ipod which I'm trying to load onto my banshee.I was able to do this in the past, but since the upgrade to 10.04 (WHICH IS AWESOME!!) I've been S.O.L. Previously, I had to change some settings in order to get the ipod to sync w banshee, and I'm wondering if that's why I'm blocking it's native ability to sync. I'm trying to remember what changes I've made, but it's been awhile...
Breakdown: - in order to mount the iPod, I have to go to Places>Ipod and select it from the list
- I then open banshee, and the ipod is recognized in my menu
- when I go to load it, it says "loading ipod", which goes indefinitely and never ends...
- in addition, it does not recognize any music/video is on my ipod - only 11.9gb of "other"
...and that's it. I would love to load my new music
I searched the forums for a long time and could not found any relevant informationI am new to ubuntu (10.10 64bit) and I just want to know if it is possible, like it is in win7 (sorry!), if I can plug in my hdmi cord and have the laptop speakers and display disable, and have the external display and its spears enabled.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings
I currently have a Windows XP OS which i want to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 . I put the disk in the drive and chose the option to install Linux through Windows. But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. "(Process:286):Glib warning**:getpwuid:failed due to unknown user id (0)
P.S.- I am not able to see any options while the boot is going on

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64 beta. After installing the flash player, everything worked fine. I installed a few updates, as well as Ubuntu Stuido from the synaptic package manager, and when I rebooted, I can't hear any sound from flash content displayed in Fire Fox. All other sounds work fine, and I made another user account as a test, and that account has full audio functionality, including flash...
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe hardware acceleration in the Adobe flashplayer gives strange side-effects (distorted "after-image") when using it in combination with the Nvidia hardware drivers. No problem, because you can right-click in a flash-player field (like a ..... moving image), go to settings - and disable hardware acceleration. The strange thing however is.. you can only do this ONE time. After that setup is greyed out an cannot be used any longer. Very bad, because after an flash update the hardware acceleration is set to "on" by default.
Even stranger... I can be used in another browser (say Opera or Google chrome) when "blocked" in Firefox - but only ONCE. When doing setup in Opera it only works one time, and after that it is also greyed out. The same thing happened with Chrome. This is very bad, because I am running out of browsers very fast. If flash is being updated/upgraded now I have no browsers left....
I have been looking for setting files in my home directory (hidden files), but did not find anything that leads to a solution. I am running the KDE desktop if this is of any help.
This has happened on two independent systems. Does anyone has the same problems? And if so - does anyone knows how to "repair" this strange behaviour?
I like vlc very much. BUT ... I am fed up having, every time, to open up "extended settings", enabling the graphic equalizer and choosing a setting. Is there any way I can change the default from "nothing" to "something".
View 4 Replies View RelatedI know it is possible to boot Ubuntu Live from a Flash drive. But it just boots up and runs like its a CD. When you shut down the computer, the changes are all lost.
Is there any way to use the flash drive as a Hard Drive? like install Ubuntu on the flash drive and have the flash drive act as a hard drive - so that if I boot with the flash drive in the computer I can boot of of the flash drive and it would act as a hard drive?
Could I just setup Ubuntu and select the flash drive as the install directory? would that accomplish this?
I am looking for a program to save accounts and settings of thunderbird to a flash drive. For I want to reload windows and ubuntu, due to slowness of opening up files. I found MozBackup utility works but it is for windows.
Is there something similar for ubuntu? Tried to find it in synapse under morzilla and thunderbird.
Flash was updated two days ago on my system:
Since then, I have been unable to get any sound out of flash. All other sound sources work fine.
I'm using Slackware 13. When a flash app pops up the allow/deny dialog, I'm stuck because the buttons are unclickable. My adobe flash player version is 10,0,42,34. How can I fix this problem?
Edit: I'm using fluxbox. I'm using an acer notebook with a synaptics touchpad.. both the touchpad and the mouse can't interact with the dialog.

View 8 Replies View RelatedEditing the profile in gnome-terminal has absolutely no effect on the appearance. I can change background color, transparency, image, etc. in the profile edit window, save changes, and the _actual_ terminal appearance does not change at all. I did make sure to switch to the edited profile after editing -- to no avail. The default navy-on-light-blue isn't bad, but the light-green default for executables is effectively completely invisible on the light blue background. Is this a bug? Or does someone have a workaround?FWIW, gnome-terminal in 9.10 was completely customizable
