I have installed the new Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and do not see where I can change the toolbar icon settings such that I only display icons, not text labels beside the icons. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I want to write a single shell script that allows me to, once executed from a panel launcher, change the image preview setting between "local files only" and never. Right now i have two tiny scripts, one for local files only and another one for never, that is:

and the other says string "local_only". But that means i need to have two launchers, because i don't know how to write the condition <<when set to never, change it to local only. And is it possible to make a script that also changes the launcher's icon when the preview config is set to one or the other value? That way i'd know what it is set to just by looking at it. It would act as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool XD
I recently installed openSUSE 11.2 x86_64 on a Dell Studio 17. The only way I can get a wired internet connection is through NetworkManager. I want to be able to make some setting changes to it but there is no NetworkManager icon on the toolbar!

View 6 Replies View RelatedI use Kubuntu 9.10. All packages are up-to-date. The problem: When opening a new window in firefox, the new window forgets the toolbar settings. So when I start firefox and the first window shows up, it shows my toolbar settings correctly, which is pretty minimalistic actually (no buttons, bookmark menu, google searchbar, etc.). But when I then open a new window from the original one, the new window has forgotten my toolbar settings and shows all the buttons, the searchbar, etc..
This happens irrespective from if I hit Ctrl+N, or print firefox after hitting Alt+F2 (which just opens a second window since the firefox process is already running). What can I do? I read in some other post that you should delete some settings file that might have gone corrupt, but I have done this and it did not help.
I screwed up and deleted my top panel and I cannot figure out how to bring it back to the original default settings. After trying different things found in other posts like
restart X, then in console:
gnome-session-remove gnome-panel
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
gnome-panel &
now both top and bottom panels are gone. I need help to bring both panels back. I'm on jaunty jackalope 9.04.
How can I change the boring grey of the Window tool bar in Ubuntu? I have tried "System>Preferences>Appearances", Compize, Emerald GNOME Colour Chooser and non of them allow me to change the tool bar colour. I have also done many extensive searches on forums, but I cannot find one topic on this adjustment. Lots about fonts, window boarders and so on. I can change everything else but the tool bar colour.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been working for the last three months with Ubuntu 10 on a destop. Doing just fine and loving it. I decided to try a new position for the toolbar that sits at the top of the screen. I did a right click and moved it to the right side of the scree, didn't like the look of that. Right click on the bar and moved it to the left, didn't like that either, so moved it to the bottom. having done all that I thought I could put it back at the top but alas, I can not right click on the Toolbar.
It seems as though the two bars are fighting each other at the bottom of the screen.I would like to go back to the default position at the top of the screen. I do have a terminal window available to me on the desktop so if I could find out the command line to type in, I should be able to reset my tool bar. Being new I have no idea what this command would be.
I use Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Kwallet is off. Then I install a wireless device under WPA. Wired icon starts to change to wireless icon, but does not and goes back to wired icon. Hovering pointer over wired icon shows wired device installed as well as wireless device. How do I keep the wireless icon in place after installing WPA to wireless device?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings
I have d/l and am using an icon theme I got from gnome-look. I like all the icons except for a few, specifically the trash, and would like to change them but I can't figure out how. I d/l an empty and full trash icon. I looked in the /home/username/.icons/themename folder and found the two trash icons that came with the theme (they were in ~/.icons/themename/scalable/places). Changed the names of the ones I d/l and replaced those current ones with them.how to do this? I would also like to change the Menu Bar icon back to the gnome foot.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI currently have a Windows XP OS which i want to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 . I put the disk in the drive and chose the option to install Linux through Windows. But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. "(Process:286):Glib warning**:getpwuid:failed due to unknown user id (0)
P.S.- I am not able to see any options while the boot is going on
My gnome-control-panel (or System Settings) only shows a 'Users' icon, all the rest are gone. I've tried reinstalling gnome-control-center and all related pkgs, so it's a configuration problem of some sort. I see this if I enter a Unity session, Gnome Classic, or Gnome-Session.Here's a screenshot of what it looks like:

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on a new machine. Because I was still using another machine as my main box while building the new one, the monitor attached when it was installed has a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 77Hz. I've now moved it to be my main machine and the monitor is a widescreen 1680x1050 @ 60Hz model. When I boot it normally the screen fails to come up - even GDM doesn't show. If I boot in failsafe mode the system comes up fine, but in 1280x1024 mode. The 'Configure display settings' icon shows the monitor as 'Unknown'. Couple of things I tried:
1) Switched to runlevel 2 and logged in as root. Ran Xorg -configure and looked at the xorg.conf.new that was installed, but it just had generic info for the monitor:

2) While still in runlevel 2 and logged in as root I did a startx. This brought up the X display in 1680x1050 ok, and clicking on the 'Configure display settings' icon showed it had correctly identified my monitor and had set the size and frequency correctly.
3) Given the results of (2), I then tried logging in as myself in runlevel 2, did startx again, but this time the display failed to come up again.

However, when I extract the icon to the proper directory, and replace all files, nothing happens. I delete the cache, kill and restore the panel via Terminal, and rebuild the cache, to no avail.

I have installed icon themes in the past, but have never really wanted to change individual icons within the packs until now. I like every icon in the pack so far, except the Firefox one. I found this old article explaining how to change the firefox icon, but i guess the directories have changed over time because i'm missing some[URL] still have the original icon in this folder, /usr/share/pixmaps/firefox.png

2- Do you have any good ideas for a icon.

I'm running Photoshop CS4 in Wine but I couldn't install it so I just copied the program files folder from my Windows 7 installation. Then, I just just drag-and-dropped Photoshop.exe on the panel, creating a shortcut to it. However, this will just show a generic icon for an executable file.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi know this is incredibly trivial, but hopefully it will have a simple answer so i don't waste too much of someone's time. i'm currently using the gnome icons theme and have been randomly editing icons to suit my desired look. everything has gone quite swimmingly with altering the icons used for shortcuts using the custom launcher or program launcher, but when it comes to the lock screen action i cannot find a way to change the icon. i have already logged in as root to simply replace all the gnome-lockscreen icon pictures with my desired picture to no effect. does anyone know how i can solve this problem?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've downloaded a program called Aptana to my Ubuntu system it is available as a plugin for eclipse, but Eclipse would not install it this way so I got the stand-alone version. I unzipped it to a folder in my home folder called Aptana and I set up a launcher to launch it from the menu.This works just fine, but it might be helpful if instead of the launcher icon I could use the icon that came with the program. It is stored in the Aptana folder.
