I got this Acer Revo 3610 nettop about a week ago. I got it to use as an htpc, and decide to do an install of xbmc live on it. I have everything set up the way I want it at this point, but I'm stuck on trying to configure the wireless.
I'm not sure where I should start troubleshooting this thing, but something about this seems off to me.
Code:
xbmc@XBMCLive:~$ sudo -s
root@XBMCLive:~# iwconfig ra0 mode Managed
root@XBMCLive:~# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
I've been wondering about how I can change settings on the notifications that show on the screen when a wireless connection is established, when I get new mail, etc. They look a lot like growl notifications from OSX, but clicking on them doesn't show me anything. If someone could explain a little about what they are/do
I have a few computers on my home network and I want to get them running at 1000Mbs Both my Ubuntu Machine and my Mac already have the hardware to run at that speed but my switch is 100Mbs so I am going to buy a new 1000Mbs switch. Do I need to change any settings in Ubuntu 9.10 to allow for 1000Mbs networking?
i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed. 2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings
Is there a way to automatically set the wireless settings for all of the accounts on the system? If I change the encryption key, DNS settings etc, I like for them to be global and not have to have the other users (my kids) have to change settings (or bypass settings).
I first want to say that I am very new to Ubuntu so please forgive any ignorance I have successfully given internet access to my xbox by connecting it via crossover cable to my ubuntu 10.04 laptop and given the eth0 settings "share with other computers" My issue is that the ip address being given to the xbox is 10.42.43.10
How can I change this ip address given, or use a static ip address (ie 192.168.x.x) because using this ip address keeps my xbox from accessing windows shares on WORKGROUP on my 192.168.x.x network.
My college providers shifted to a different setting.. I'm not sure what needs to be done. On windows, under the connections tab you need to change the proxy settings and put in the IP address and enter the port to 3000. Questions:
1. where lies the linux (ubuntu 10.04) variant to execute the operation.
2. What can be the major obligations of such a change?
I am sure its siimple enough, but I can't get my net to work properly. The connection provided to the internet is through wireless routers.
Sometimes I am unable to reconnect to my wireless AP using the same settings that worked the previous day, and that has me stumped. I think it's due to me switching access points (using different authenticatin) since the last connection.
1) After I enter iwconfig/iwpriv commands to connect my wireless usb card (edimax) to my WPA2 network, what process performs the negotiation with the AP, and is there a way to see status debug messages from that process so that I can see if there was a successful negotiation? (so I can see if the password is correct, etc).
2) Is there a way to manually invoke that process to re-attempt to negotiate? Or must I assume that happens automatically with any iwconfig/iwpriv command?
3) Is there a simple command that will erase all iwconfig/iwpriv settings so that I can start over with my iwconfig/iwpriv commands?
the default for /etc/network/interfaces? I believe I screwed it it up because I can detect my wireless, it just won't allow me to connect to it. The settings in the /etc/network/interfaces are all messed up. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10.
Well when I first installed fedora 15 my wireless internet was working fine, and then out of the blue the option to select a wireless network wont show up.
Im sorry to be one of those people who register and there first post is a question, but since fedora 15 is new I couldnt find any information on my issue.
So basically, If I go into Network Settings I have two choices in the left hand tab. Wired, and Network proxy. Yesterday I also had wireless, Since the issue I have updated everything but still have no luck.
I am having this issue on a emachine em350 netbook, I am unable to post a link to it as I get a error since im new and not allowed to post links.
I moved my server and network equipment, and now the wireless works but I cannot get my server online. I host a website, so this is kind of urgent.
I have a wireless router and can access the internet fine on my laptop. My server is wired & connected to the router. It sets up the networking properly.. ifconfig has an ip address, the default gateway is present. But I cannot ping google, or even the router. It says destination host unreachable.
So I go back to the laptop to check the router settings.. sometimes it likes to assign the server the wrong internal ip. But, I can't access the router settings either! The page (192.168.1.1) times out. Same with trying to ping the router. How can the laptop be online if it can't reach the router?
Oddly, ifconfig on my laptop reports an ip address starting with 99.233. It's always given me an internal address starting with 192.168. What's going on here? Is the router not allocating an internal ip? I use wicd to connect, if it's relevant.
We have a windows laptop that can only get a "local connection". Now it does sound like the router is forwarding directly to my laptop, instead of allocating internal ips.
I currently have a Windows XP OS which i want to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 . I put the disk in the drive and chose the option to install Linux through Windows. But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. "(Process:286):Glib warning**:getpwuid:failed due to unknown user id (0)
P.S.- I am not able to see any options while the boot is going on
I log on and Network Manager shows no wireless adapter.
I go to System > Administration > Network:
There are two entries in the Devices tab: Wireless and Ethernet
As soon as I double click the Wireless device and the configuration pops up, the device starts working (no changes to the settings are made)
I have the following set to ON: - Controlled by Network Manager - Activate device when computer starts - Allow all users to enable and disable this device
I have a desktop with a printer attached on a wireless link.I have a laptop where I want to print from. The problem is the wireless link comes up only after I log on to the desktop.I would prefer the wireless link (and cups) to be up with out having to log on at the desktop.
I'm trying to create a user account for my children in Ubuntu 10.04
When creating their account, I have turned off the 'Connect to ethernet and wireless' option of the Advanced Settings.
However, when I log into their accounts, they still have full access to the internet through both the wireless and ethernet connections. Is this option for some other purpose?
Is there an alternate way to limit internet access for childrens' accounts in Ubuntu? (I'm used to MS Family Safety as a filter for internet access - is there an eqivalent for Ubuntu?)
I currently have a desktop PC (running 10.04) connected to the home hub (v2) via ethernet and everything works correctly. I want to change to wireless so I can move the home hub, I've tried several usb wireless adapters and always end up with the same issue. I can associate with the home hub it will hand out an ip address, answer dns queries and allow me to connect to its web setup page but not the internet (ping, web, etc). I also have a htpc (also 10.04) which is able to connect through the wireless correctly plus a laptop running XP.
Desktop - Ubuntu 10.04 (gnome) HTPC - Mythtv 10.04 Laptop - Windows XP

Hardware: Vostro 3500, BCM4353Ubuntu 10.10Today I decided to test uptime on battery. But when I started using battery I noticed that internet connection is very slow(around 1-4 KB/s, normally ~128KB/s).I used Code:iwpriv eth1 set_pm 0(pm = power mode? And what means this parameter 0, 1 and 2?)and everything seems to be ok now.And my question is - where can I edit which power mode settings for wifi are used on battery?
I would like to change wireless mode on my network card. When i type in iwconfig in terminal so i get abg I would like to have only a mode active. How do i do?
I've changed my wireless network password and when I try to connect through my F10 machine, it continues to use the old password. I've changed it a number of times through the GUI that pops up (Wireless Network Authentication Required) and also through the Edit Connections GUI but they always revert back to the old password and disregard the new one.
I am trying to configure a wireless connection from YAST under the Network Settings tool.It doesn't seem to do anything. My USB wifi device is detected in YAST > Hardware and I am using the module it says Hardware is using. It doesn't seem to save the module under YAST> Network Settings> Network Card Setup. Is this tool broken or useless? It seems setting up WiFi should be easier than this. YAST should work shouldn't it?
I fixed my wireless driver, turned on power management, and, that keeps getting reset to the defaults after sleep or hibernate (KDE control panel). There are many places to hard code fixes like these, but, is there some place dedicated to post-restore scripts? I don't want to put my script somwhere that it's going to get clobbered on a system update. This system really needs an /etc/rc.local anyway. Can I just create one and put it in the string of things to run at transition between runstate 3 and 5? Will that always get run with the powermanagement stuff?
Tried to Google an answer but it seems the 'System' menu options have changed in 10.4 compared to older versions.I want to chnage the auto-run settings so that each time I enter a CD, Rhythembox DOESN'T load but SoundJuicer DOES
when I installed 10.10 I chose ask for password on login but I want to now just be on when I turn on the computer without asking for a password. how can I do this?
I received Ubuntu 10.10 (a friend gave me the cd) Well, I installed, but I can't change the display settings: the maximum it gives is 900x600 So, I went online and looked for a fix.. I found this:
Code: Sudo dpkg-reconfigure x server-xorg
Well, the problem is that according to the steps that the person who posted the code, I should type this code after executing Terminal before computer boots. and the way to execute Terminal is to have the key: escape holded Well, I do hold the key: escape. but I see no terminal! I have typed in normal mode...but, I guess the code only works before boot up. How can I execute terminal? is there any other way to fix the display settings? I currently have Windows Xp and Ubuntu.... and I have no problem with the display settings on Xp Can I do do from recovery mode?
Because I have 2 operating systems I get a screen like this (except mine is ubuntu 10.10) If I do it from the recovery mode.... would the code works?
I'm trying to move a file to opt folder. But I cant do it because I dont have the permission to do it. In folder preferences it says " you are not the owner"How can I move a file to opt folder? or How can I change the folder permission settings?
Editing the profile in gnome-terminal has absolutely no effect on the appearance. I can change background color, transparency, image, etc. in the profile edit window, save changes, and the _actual_ terminal appearance does not change at all. I did make sure to switch to the edited profile after editing -- to no avail. The default navy-on-light-blue isn't bad, but the light-green default for executables is effectively completely invisible on the light blue background. Is this a bug? Or does someone have a workaround?FWIW, gnome-terminal in 9.10 was completely customizable
I have installed the new Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and do not see where I can change the toolbar icon settings such that I only display icons, not text labels beside the icons. Does anyone know how to fix this?
