I have just bought a new PC with an ASUS M4A78-AM motherboard with integrated VT1708S 6-channel sound chip in it, so I freshly installed fedora 12 without any issues However, I can't get the surround sound working. I have searched many forums a lot, and haven't found any solution yet.It seems that even the SPDIF output does not work on this sound card, and that is what people talk about on almost every forum / mail list. So I was unable to find almost ANY information regarding ANALOG surround sound.
The motherboard has 3 jacks on it - green for FRONT / 2 speaker set; blue is the line in OR THE REAR-SPEAKER out, and pink is the microphone OR side speaker out in the 6-spk configuration. My speaker configuration is 4.1 [2 front, 2 back and subwoofer]. Line out does not produce any sound.I have uninstalled pulseaudio [sudo yum remove pulseaudio]Now alsamixer shows a lot of controls, but even if I unmute line out and set it to max, it is still not producing any sound.

For months it was perfect. Simultaneous sound from both SPDIF and computer speakers. Today suddenly out of the blue no sound in SPDIF. If I click Test in KDE System Settings for SPDIF devivce that sound is played, so, I tried putting this device at the top, then sound comes only from SPDIF but not from the speakers!
God, why in Linux something perfect breaks into thousand pieces without any seemingly changes...

I do not have a receiver that accepts HDMI so I need to use spdif That said, i was able to test the hdmi portion of the sound with my tv and that appears to be working fine.[URL]Below is just the list of aplay -l

I just installed Ubuntu Lucid beta 2 on my desktop, and I can't seem to get the sound to work. I have a Soundblaster Audigy 2 card and the motherboard has built-in sound, but ubuntu doesn't recognize either of them. The only hardware option I have in my sound preferences is for SPDIF, and thats the only thing that shows up in alsamixer as well.

Currently using an Asrock ION 330 with an SPDIF output and running 10.04It works as stereo but can't get the system to run as surround sound and everything shows as 2 channels only. The hardware itself supports it fine as it works under windows 7 without issues so it has to be a config issue somewhere.I have tried everything I can find via google including upgrading the alsa drivers but so far there has been no change.

On my initial setup I follow the Comprehensive sound guide that is posted on the ubuntu forums because I wanted to get the spdif work Optical out with surround. After a while I was able some how to get it to work and but my headphones would no longer output sound so in an effort to get sound back to the headphones I maanged to ruin the the settings for the spdif. My question is how can I get spdif back and switch between headphones and spdif.I there no way to figure it out how do I purge every file that has to do with sound and recompile. ( THe comprehensive sound guide showed how to purge the alsa utils but that didnt work if someone know why please let me know and if you could explain.)

I have been using Ubuntu as my main OS on my desktops for a couple of years now. Started off with a HP with a Creative Labs XiFi soundcard, but am now using a Dell with a Creative Labs Audigy. Sound worked perfectly on the Dell since a clean install (about 7 months ago). I turned it on a week or so ago, and no sound! Even the little sound indicator in the notification area has gone.

I am setting up a mythtv/xmbc box on Ubuntu 10.10 (natty does not install on my hardware). I have a Sabrent TV PCIRC tuner card, which seems to work fine with the proper card and tuner settings. My on-board sound is HDA-Intel surround sound, which I have configured as analog duplex.
Currently the sound works fine through my speakers plugged into any jack on the back of the PC (two speakers, one jack). I can watch ripped movies and listen to music. The TV tuner is pumping sound from its external jack -- if I hook it up directly to the speakers it works fine. I can feed the Tuner's sound to the line-in on my motherboard, but nothing comes out. In the sound manager, i have the input device selected and the input level shows that the sound is coming in through the connector, and I can test the speakers and they work fine, but they don't seem to be communicating that the sound coming in needs to be pumped out through the speakers.

Anyone know which of these cards will work on Suse 11.4?

Asus Xonar DS

I encountered this on a 10.3 system but there might be similar problem with the 11 series. Having gone through the business of obtaining config info on this card via pnpdump and subsequently using Yast to configure and install it, I encountered a situation whereby the card was fully functional as far as the "Test Sound" option of Yast was concerned. However, after a reboot, it was not loaded and no sound was possible. Debugging the "alsasound" script, I discovered that the directory /proc/asound was not in place at that time and, therefore, sound was not started.
The solution was to add the module name (snd_sbawe) to /etc/sysconfig/kernel to the parameter "MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT". Seems like Yast did not see a reason to do this itself.

since upgrading my desktop I've had trouble getting my old sound blaster audigy working. I've disabled the motherboard's on board sound in the bios. My new desktop is built around the Intel i7-2600K. I have a suspicion that maybe linux isn't playing nice with the pci-e to pci bridge that has replaced native pci support but I have no evidence of this. The sound card works fine in windows. The card is detected

I have a Toshiba laptop and Toshiba netbook (both Intel chipsets). Laptop - Squeeze install gave me the 2.6.32 kernel and sound only worked thru headphones but not the speakers. Later on, I compiled kernel 2.6.36.1 (and just imported .config from original kernel) and sound WORKED perfectly. I had a few other errors ("address space collision" / PM error) so recently I compiled kernel 2.6.38, which solved other hardware issues but sound is back to original problem (works thru headphones but not thru speakers). I even installed the "backports" kernel (2.6.38.4) and it didn't make a difference.
Netbook - Did exact same things as above but no matter what, the sound never worked on it... same issue (sound in headphones.. no sound in speakers) So, how do I "reverse-engineer" the laptop working sound install with kernel 3.6.36.1 and make it work with later kernel (nothing... and I've tried about 30+ thread suggestions makes the sound cards work properly.. other than kernel 2.6.36.1)

I recently installed Fodora 14 on a PC with Asus mainboard.
CPU is AMD LE-1100.
The sound card is Realtek ALC662-GR Azalia High Definition Audio
Unfortunately after installation, there is no sound.
In fedora, System->Preferences->Sound window, Hardware tab is empty.
I tried to install two versions of sound card driver.
One came from the CD of the mainboard called realtek-linux-audiopack-4.06x
First I tried to run the "install", it went through to the final GUI stage searching for the sound card but failed to find.
Then I tried to do a manual install following the readme file.
Basically, unpack->configure->make
but make failed with the following error message
make[1]: Entering directory '/home/user/00Sound/realtek-linux-audiopack-4.06x/alsa-driver-1.0.14rc3-4.06x/acore' .....
/lib/modules/2.6.35.6-45.fc14.i686/build/include/linux/types.h:4:23: fatal error: asm/types.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
make[1]: *** [memalloc.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/user/00Sound/realtek-linux-audiopack-4.06x/alsa-driver-1.0.14rc3-4.06x/acore'
make: *** [compile] Error 1
Later I tried to download another version of the driver from Realtek website
realtek-linux-audiopack-5.15
make also failed but with a different error:
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.35.6-45.fc14.i686/source SUBDIRS=/home/user/00Sound/realtek-linux-audiopack-5.15/alsa-driver-1.0.23 CPP="gcc -E" CC="gcc" modules .....
make: *** [compile] Error 2

where I can find a package for mplayer with dvdnav support enabled?
I was disappointed to discover that in 10.04 dvdnav support was disabled in mplayer. I rely on it for my mythtv front end box to be able to play DVDs. According to a bug it was disabled because of an upstream email chain where dvdnav was considered 'experimental' and 'not ready for production use'. Funny as it worked fine for me.
Post #6 here is where I found the above reasoning for it being disabled.

I'm trying to get AC3/DTS passthrough working with my HTPC in which I'm using the onboard sound from an nForce 4-based motherboard. I've tested it in Win7 to check that all the connections etc are set up correctly and it works perfectly there. However under Kubuntu I can only get 2ch PCM sound to work through the SPDIF connection. Any DTS/DD sources just result in silence. If I go into Multimedia settings in the System Settings panel, the SPDIF device that shows up there (once I enable advanced devices) produces no sound with the Test button. I can hear a click as the device is activated but no sound is produced. I can also see that a digital signal is making it to my receiver as it has an icon which lights up when it locks onto a signal.Has anyone had success with SPDIF passthrough in 9.10? I've tried twiddling all the settings in Kmix relate to IEC and also tried following the Alsa wiki on digital passthrough without any success.
