Ubuntu Multimedia :: XBMC Live Install Not Functioning - Video Card ?

Apr 24, 2010

I tried to run the XBMC live disc but could not fully boot. Each time I could only get to a command prompt after the XBMC splash screen with spinning circle. So I thought, "Maybe because my computer is sort of old (Pentium 4, 2.26 Ghz, 512 RAM) it doesn't like the XBMC Live disc. It will probably work if I install to the HDD." I installed it only to get the same result, XBMC splash screen then loading of command prompt. Does anyone know how to fix this? Is the computer compatible?

Ubuntu :: Multimedia Center Based On XBMC Live - Cannot Configure Bluetooth?

Apr 6, 2011

I assembled a small multimedia center based on XBMC Live (Ubuntu). And cannot configure bluetooth. In older versions of bluez was hcid.conf file, through which I can set options iscan, pscan and lm (link mode). In new versions of bluez 4.xx instead of this file is used main.conf and these parameters there is not provided. How apply these settings to the bluetooth adapter at system startup and when I connect the adapter to the usb port? In general, the system behaves is not clear. Sometimes the adapter after the system is turned on, and sometimes it turns off.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Video On XBMC \videos Have Sound, But No Picture?

Jul 31, 2010

I am having problems: videos have sound, but no picture.I'm using a Gigabyte motherboard with integrated ATI video, and I've read before that XBMC (and Ubuntu in general) don't like ATI too much. Is there any hope left to make XBMC work?I've tried the following:1. Fresh Ubuntu installation, default ATI drivers. Result: when starting a video, audio is okay, but no video. Also, visibly slow graphics even while navigating XBMC menus

2. Installed ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX driver via System->Hardware drivers. Result: significantly accelerated menu navigation, but no video still. Note: having no problems watching videos via VLC or Totem Movie Player (after downloading proper codecs)3. Fresh Ubuntu installation, then downloaded and installed ATI's proprietary Linux drivers from ATI's site (ati-driver-installer-10-7-x86.x86_64.run). Result: yippee, I see some video, but wait: no color!! (all videos are in sepia-like mode)

4. Followed these instructions to install the unofficial ATI drivers. Result: total failure, XBMC won't even start, says something about the need to have proper hardware OpenGL acceleration.System info:GIGABYTE GA-MA785GMT-UD2H AM3 AMD 785G mobo with ATI Radeon HD 4200 onboard graphicsAMD Phenom II X2 550 processor4 gigs of DDR3 RAM Ubuntu Lucid 32 bit (2.6.32-24-generic-pae)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: NVidia G92 - GeForce 8800 GT Graphics Card Is Not Fully Functioning

Jan 25, 2010

I already posted this message on another thread but I'd like to start a new thread with it now, and add a few more details. My son and I are having trouble getting the graphics card to work properly in his computer. The resolution is good, but the graphics card is not fully functioning. He works on animation and graphics of several kinds, and the graphics programs cannot run without a fully functioning graphics card.

The computer will not run Blender and other graphics programs. Nor will it even allow for the "normal" "Visual Effects" in the "Appearance Preferences." (It comes up with the error: "Desktop effects could not be enabled," after it tries to find the driver.) The system is:

Graphics Card: nVidia G92, GeForce 8800 GT
System: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, 2.6.31-17-generic, 4.4.1 (x86_64-linux-gnu)
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ (3 Gigs RAM)

We know the graphics card works because it works in Windows. (We set up the computer to boot off of either of two hard drives -- either in Windows XP or Ubuntu 9.10, karmic.) Neither my son nor I understand much of the terminology on your forums, although I have been using Ubuntu for some years and have read quite a bit. (I also have the "Beginning Ubuntu Linux" book.) I love Ubuntu, but sometimes I just cannot figure out how to get some things running. We have tried many different ways of installing the drivers and setting up the xorg.conf file. We have followed the instructions on this and other threads. We also installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-64-190.53-pkg2.run, as well as 173 and 185. The screen will only work at a proper resolution when we set the "Driver" to "nv" in the xorg.conf file. The screen goes completely blank and dead if we set the "Driver" to "nvidia." Then we need to reboot in safe mode and edit the xorg.conf file with VIM.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Playback With Ubuntu Server 8.04 -> Xubuntu 8.10 W/ XBMC?

Feb 26, 2010

I've been having strange problems with my server/media center setup lately: The movie just stops in XBMC, as if it had reached the end, randomly, some times only once in a movie, sometimes every 5 min. Then, I have to rewind all the way to where I was to resume the movie.

I'll explain my setup:

Server with Ubuntu Server 8.04 with samba/lighttpd/proftpd/etc. which contains all the media (192.168.0.104)
-10meters cable->
dlink di-634 router (192.168.0.1) -> internet
-30meters cable->
dlink di-624+ router (192.168.10.1)
-10meters cable->
Media PC which runs Xubuntu 8.10 (due to massive slowdown with the integrated intel gpu in 9.04) running XBMC 9.04. (192.168.10.102)

I use samba to serve the videos to the media center. I have considered putting them all into the hdd of the media center, but then I would have to put more HD's into it, and that would cause cooling issues due to the case being very small. Having a server has proven quite useful too. The movies I'm watching are in 480p or smaller resolution. First, my routers were in opposite positions. But the di-624+ couldn't take all the traffic going through it anymore after a couple of additional laptops were added to the network, and started rebooting frequently. I thought this was the reason for the stopping, so I decided to switch places (the DI-634 is more stable and also has much better wireless range, being newer and having dual antennas). After doing this, the same thing still happens, and looking at the routers' logs, they don't say anything about rebooting (also I was connected to IRC all the time, no disconnects there either).

Then, I figured my server was running out of RAM or something similiar, but I ruled that out after checking it (it only uses about 10% RAM, processor loads stay at about 1 all the time. I probably forgot to mention this, but this setup used to work 100% before. I haven't changed anything, besides updating both machines with apt-get update & upgrade.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Card Died New Card Boots To Black?

Jul 15, 2010

My video card developed problems, so I followed the suggestion in this thread:

Quote: Boot into recovery mode, then choose root, for a command prompt and enter
Code: dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

but my ubuntu 10.04 32-bit system still won't boot. Shortly after the ubuntu logo comes up, before the login, my screen goes black and there is no more video signal. What else can I do to reset the video configuration? The card only has this info on it: I could put the card back in the system, reboot, and then pre-configure the system to drop to the intel 865G on-board video, but the msi card has intermittent problems and will spontaneously re-boot several times during the first ten minutes of turning on the system.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Log Into CNN Live Streaming Video / Fix It?

Aug 3, 2011

I'm not sure this is, strictly speaking, an Ubuntu problem (although it may be), but people around here seem to be more knowledgeable than they are anywhere else, so it's worth a try.

CNN recently started offering its news station on live streaming video for those who get CNN from a participating cable provider. For better or worse, I get CNN on Comcast, so no problem there.

Except for lagging video because lack of processing speed, it all works fine on my netbook, on which I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed.

But on my desktop, where I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, no such luck. The problem is the same regardless of whether I'm using Opera, Firefox or Chrome.

I can go to http://cnn.com/video and get the standard video streams (not CNN live) just fine. When I click on the "Live" button and then the "Unlock Live TV" button, I get, as expected, the "Sign in to watch live TV" dialogue box. So I click on Comcast, log in correctly, and am returned to the main screen. The page appears to be loading correctly, and then I get the "Sign in to watch live TV" dialogue box again. No matter how many times I try, that's what I keep on getting.

If this didn't work on my netbook, I'd just assume that for some reason the setup is Linux-unfriendly, but now I'm determined to get this working.

I've checked my plugin settings on my browsers and nothing seems amiss. I've tried deleting all cookies, persistent storage, Flash cookies and all such things, but to no avail. Even though I had the most recent version, I even uninstalled and reinstalled Flash, but that didn't change anything.

Ubuntu Networking :: TI ACX111 Wireless Card Not Functioning In 10.04?

May 6, 2010

I installed 10.04 today, not having used this system for Ubuntu since 8.04. My wireless card (Texas Instruments ACX 111) worked perfectly in Windows XP and 7, and it worked on installation in 8.04.

I did a clean, full install of 10.04 (no dual boot or anything), but the wireless card is not working. The OS doesn't even seem to recognize that it is there because I can't even scan for networks, let alone connect.

The only reason I have a connection on this computer is because I am sharing the internet via ethernet from my Macbook.

General :: Atheros Card Not Functioning Well Under WPA2?

Jun 28, 2011

I've got a Toshiba Satellite L25-S199, and it includes an Atheros wireless NIC based on the AR2413 chipset, I believe. Currently I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4 on it, but I've previously had Xubuntu and Ubuntu, and this problem has always existed with WPA2.

Specifically, the LAN is a wireless WPA2 with AES encryption (no TKIP). The computer can connect to the network just fine, but the web is all but unusable; it is very finicky, mostly failing to fetch any pages, but sometimes succeeding (mostly with Google pages, and those from the local network's servers). Perhaps a DNS issue?

This problem doesn't occur with WEP or no encryption.

Here's the output of lspci

From what I can tell (From Looking at forums)
Nvidia is the way to go with Ubuntu

All I do is watch videos and brows online.

But videos and desktop effects are both very choppy.

I realize that if I take the time, I can probably get my card to work well, but I just don't have the time.

Looking for a new card between $100-$150 that will work perfect right out of the box.
