I've been unable to do a fresh install of XBMC Live 9.11 to my hard drive. Everytime it fails at the Install System step. But I am able to get XBMC Live 9.04.1 to install successfully. How do I upgrade XBMC Live 9.04.1 to 9.11? I understand that Ctrl+Alt+F2 brings up the command line, but what are the next set of commands to run?
View 1 RepliesCouple of days I go I setup VLC using Kubuntu's graphic software manager, and installed the 3 plug-ins, one of which was related to pulse. After doing this sound stopped working in flash videos. I had read, not sure where, that Kubuntu didn't use pulse (which slipped my mind when setting up VLC).
So I make the mistake of removing everything which had pulse in it's name (again, via the graphic software manager). A message popped-up saying that some packages needed to be removed/edited (a LONG list, a big clue that I was doing something stupid I guess). I let it run it's course and after that it won't boot properly.
If I boot it normally it hangs at the Kubuntu screen with the five dots filling endlessly. If I press F1 it's stuck at "checking battery status."
Recovery mode boots, but the recovery option does nothing.
So I was wondering if I could boot into recovery mode and go into the terminal and add a live USB as a repository for apt, and try to salvage the install?
Or should I admit defeat and reinstall?
What's a good linux command line utility for watching a log file live? It's probably obvious but I totally forgot it.

I want to restore it to a new one where the partition size is smaller (the used space on the source partition is less than the destination partition size). Unfortunately when I try to restore it I get a error stating that I need to use -C to disable size checking.

Unfortunately, a few hours into it my computer hung. I had no choice but to reboot. When I did so the computer started a 10.04 screen and then went to a 'command line' for me to login. I am able to login, however, all i have is the 'command line'. What can i do now? Can I restart the upgrade from the 'command line'?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had problems with python stuff and so update manager did not work. Also many other problems, PiTiVi was installed but did not start eg... After many trials of this and that I removed python-gtk2 and so also ubuntu desktop. But was unable to get it back. Now I cannot even shut down. While it is not possible to install desktop or anything else, would it be possible to fix this by upgrading the whole system to 10.04 (10.10?)? Would it fix python installation. How could I do it. Some info tells to change sources.list and run apt-get upgrade, but some tell not to do so.

Keep getting alert notification box, with close button. But get no response from keyboard or mouse. So I can't get past it. It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment. (Late model Dell, probably less than 2 years old.) But since I can't use the mouse to activate the close button, or use the keyboard (alt + x, or enter), I can't get past that point. Is there some control sequence I can use during boot startup and get to single user mode and modify something?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded a server on our LAN from fully functioning Wheezy to Jessie. All seems fine except remote administering using Putty from my windows workstation when issuing reboot from command line, it goes down and reboots but stops at login prompt asking for username and password and does not come back on the LAN network. This server does not normally have a monitor or keyboard so my ability to remote admin this server in effect is disabled.
If I log on, it will come back on the LAN network. I've checked the logs but can't see any errors. Is it in the configuration of Jessie somewhere or perhaps a Grub issue. I have 5 other production Wheezy servers that I intend to update to Jessie once I understand how to deal with this problem.
I tried to run the XBMC live disc but could not fully boot. Each time I could only get to a command prompt after the XBMC splash screen with spinning circle. So I thought, "Maybe because my computer is sort of old (Pentium 4, 2.26 Ghz, 512 RAM) it doesn't like the XBMC Live disc. It will probably work if I install to the HDD." I installed it only to get the same result, XBMC splash screen then loading of command prompt. Does anyone know how to fix this? Is the computer compatible?

In older versions of bluez was hcid.conf file, through which I can set options iscan, pscan and lm (link mode). In new versions of bluez 4.xx instead of this file is used main.conf and these parameters there is not provided. How apply these settings to the bluetooth adapter at system startup and when I connect the adapter to the usb port? In general, the system behaves is not clear. Sometimes the adapter after the system is turned on, and sometimes it turns off.

I'm having trouble using Blender and XBMC after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10. Whenever I start the Game Engine mode in Blender (by pressing 'P'), Blender crashes. This happens both in the repository version (2.49.2) and with the newest version (2.54 beta).
For some reason, xbmc actually starts without problems now, but earlier the console output was somewhat similar to that of Blender. The output from Blender seems to indicate that there is something wrong with either libc6 or the NVIDIA drivers. The xbmc output (which now works ok) mentioned something about /lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so, if I remember correctly.

I need to disable the X server to install it, which brings me to a blank screen prompting for a login before continuing. it reads thusly:

Password:[i type the password i use to login from the normal GUI screen, however i see no indication that im typing anything..]

I dont want a Linux filesystem (ext2,ext3 or 4or reiserfs)for my USB as it is not portable across many systems as MS OSes do not read them..Also I had little success in booting a USB when I partitioned it using ext2..I read somewhere that ext2 will not reduce the life of the USB drive compared to other fs.

I can get to the GUI using startx, but in doing so I lose all audio output, and the option to shutdown or reboot from both CairoDock and the default panel...
I was trying to learn more about xorg configuration and came through an exercise that should be run at run level 3. So, I wrote init 3 in the command line then the x server stopped and the system was trying to enter run level 3 but then it hangs and nothing happens. At that time I was connected to the system via putty and wrote the command init 5 and the x server started again normally. I tried init 3 again and had the same thing.
