Multimedia :: Looking For Best Video Card For Ubuntu?

Aug 7, 2010

I'm looking to replace my video card...

From what I can tell (From Looking at forums)
Nvidia is the way to go with Ubuntu

Just want to double check that, since the newest post I found was a couple years old.

The video card I have now should be more than good enough for me.
All I do is watch videos and brows online.

But videos and desktop effects are both very choppy.

I realize that if I take the time, I can probably get my card to work well, but I just don't have the time.

Looking for a new card between $100-$150 that will work perfect right out of the box.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Card Died New Card Boots To Black?

Jul 15, 2010

My video card developed problems, so I followed the suggestion in this thread:

Quote: Boot into recovery mode, then choose root, for a command prompt and enter
Code: dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

but my ubuntu 10.04 32-bit system still won't boot. Shortly after the ubuntu logo comes up, before the login, my screen goes black and there is no more video signal. What else can I do to reset the video configuration? The card only has this info on it: I could put the card back in the system, reboot, and then pre-configure the system to drop to the intel 865G on-board video, but the msi card has intermittent problems and will spontaneously re-boot several times during the first ten minutes of turning on the system.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Card Crashing When Using Video Editor?

Jun 12, 2010

My system: Pentium 4 3.6 GHz, 3 Gb DDR ram, GeForce 210 video card, Ubuntu 10.04.

I have previously used Cinelerra-cv (on Karmic) and recently Openshot (on Lucid) with not much trouble. I have been sampling other video editors (Kdenlive, avidemux, kino etc). Now I have my video card crashing whichever I use, mainly when trying to load clips. I have disabled Compiz, uninstalled all video editors and then reinstalled one at a time. I still get early video crashes whichever I try.

Multimedia :: Best Video Card For Ubuntu

Sep 2, 2010

After a post on the wine forums came to the discovery that my ATI radeon 4850 graphics card is causing much trouble in my ubuntu machine because of the lack of support. And because of that I cannot play my favorite games through wine. So now I'm saving some money to buy a new graphic card. A nvidia this time.
Now I don't know all that much about graphic cards, but I am looking for a card that works well on ubuntu that equals the performance of my old 4850 and fits my P5Q pro motherboard.
I myself don't know much about good graphic cards so if I go off to buy something without good advice I probably end up with something that does not work or fit or something like that.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Which Video Card To Buy?

Nov 29, 2010

We at church are going to build a new computer to use with Datasoul, therefore I need to use 3 monitors.I've been searching about it and it seems very hard to configure Ubuntu to use 3 monitors. I know in Windows it is very easy to configure, but our budget is very small and we cannot afford to purchase a Windows license, so I need to know which video cards to purchase in order to be easier to configure; ATI or NVidia?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Best Video Card For H.264 And HDMI?

Jul 2, 2010

I'm looking to put a new video card in my desktop. I need one that will be able to handle H.264 at 1920x1080, and I would like to find one that can do HDMI with audio. Shopping for video cards, as I heard somewhere, is the kind of thing that makes you want to bang your head against a wall until you go blind, because then you won't need to worry about it any more... someone will be able to recommend a model, or at least a chipset or something, before I rip my own eyes out.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Card - Install The Driver?

Apr 13, 2010

I am attempting to make a video machine only... which mean I have a Compaq 6435cl and I have installed the latest verion of ubuntu on it. All I want this machine to do is play video from off the net on my LCD HD TV. The video on board was all choppy when going into full screen mode so I put in a 3dfx Voodoo card and the same thing happens. I cannot figure out how to install the drivers for this card in ubuntu so I was wondering if I should by a new video card. Do you have a recomended video card for ubuntu that would push HD video?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Card Not Supported By 10.4 64-bits

Aug 17, 2010

I'm working right now with a newly installed Lucid 64-bit. Everything it's fine, but I would like to use the dual monitor for my work, and so I decided to ask to buy me a video card, since what I have now is an onboard graphic that doesn't allow me to do it. I don't need to play games (well I don't think my boss will be happy about it ), and I would rather go for a not expensive solution. But I have some doubts regarding the compatibility with my linux. I found several things on the web, but nothing regarding the video cards that I individuated. If the card is auto detected, it would be better of course.

The cards I was interested are:

ASUS RADEON HD4350 1GB DDR2
SAPPHIRE RADEON HD5450 512MB DDR3

But then i've seen on the web you might have problems with ATI in linux and so I went looking also for Nvidia which I found is generally better implemented under linux: ASUS GEFORCE GT 210 512MB DDR2

PALIT GEFORCE GT 220 SUPER 512MB DDR2 I don't have many models among which to choose, because of some conventions at my workplace. The tables of compatibility with ubuntu that I found are all related with much more expensive models, or models that I don't have in my lists. Could somebody tell me if one (or more) of the cards mentioned above work under ubuntu 10.6 64-bit? I have a Hewlett Packard system with:

HP 3674h motherboard
Intel core2 duo 3.16 GHz
8Gb RAM
250 HD

Ubuntu Multimedia :: New Video Card Wiped Out Sound?

Mar 29, 2011

I recently installed a new evga nVidia GT 430 video card in my Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit system. This had the unforseen side effect of eliminating my sound.

I had no idea that the new video card would include a new sound module. My intent is for my system to use my Soundblaster Audigy2 soundcard in 5.1 output mode. The system still seems to be configured to do that, but the nVidia HDMI Stereo output module seems to have taken over in Sound Preferences.

Here is the output of lspci:

Code:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Adding Nvidia GeForce 210 Video Card?

Jan 5, 2010

I have a 64 bit computer with a 64 bit distribution of Ubuntu. The driver for the onboard video card wasn't supported beyond 8.04, so I didn't upgrade. Yesterday, I bought a NVIDIA GeForce 210 video card. I installed it and Ubuntu detected it and worked, but the resolution was limited to 640x480 (I think). I figured this would be corrected by updating, so I updated to 9.04. When I had to restart, the option to select which OS (Linux or Win) came up, I selected 9.04, and the ubuntu symbol came on. The status bar went to the end and the screen turned black, flickered 5 times, turned black and stopped progressing. The xorg.conf file is:

Section"Driver"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection
Section"Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

[Code]...

I tried changing the driver from "vesa" to "nv" without any effect. Does anyone have any idea what I should do to get this to work?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Card Switches Between /dev/video1 And Video0?

Feb 3, 2010

Seemingly at random when I reboot my PC which I do every now and then, when I get it back up and running it will sometimes have switched my video card from using /dev/video1 to /dev/video0 or vice versa. It's not a huge deal but it is slightly annoying and I would like to understand why it does it and how I can stop it from flip flopping.

Not sure what you need to know in order to answer but I use 9.10, gnome 2.28.1, the video card is a Hauppauge 150 PVR something.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Onboard HDMI And A Video Card At Same Time?

Jul 26, 2010

I'm looking at upgrading my motherboard and graphics card. Ideally, I'd like to have 2 monitors running at once (DVI), and an output to an LCD projector (HDMI). If I can't have all 3 working at once, I'd like the 2 monitors on all the time (off the graphics card), and then switch from the monitors to the HDMI output so that only the projector is getting video.

So, If I get a motherboard with onboard HDMI, would it be possible to run the HDMI out at the same time as the graphics card output?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Check Video Card Broken - Is It Just Setup?

Aug 14, 2010

I have a GeForce 8600M GS card in a Dell Vostro 1710, which has appeared to be playing up lately, but I'm unsure whether it's the hardware itself or have I not properly set things up.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed with compiz, and 'rotate cube' enabled. The 'deformation' is set to cylinder. I recently tried using rss-glx (really slick screensaver) when the slow-down and screen freezes happened.

The symptoms:

Odd behaviour begins after attempting to log in after the screensaver has blanked the screen, i.e. screensaver ran for a while then the screen blanked. When logged back in, a 'cylinder' rotate freezes and the screen does not refresh. Clicking around the screen refreshes it somewhat. Switching between screens becomes next to impossible and a restart is required.

In general rotating the cube is OK, rotating the cylinder seems a task on the video card and rotating the sphere is horribly slow.

Things done so far:

Each time I log in, I need to open the NVidia settings and change the powermizer to 'prefer maximum performance'. On next reboot I will try this in xorg.conf code...

My questions are:
- How can I verify the card is working correctly, enough to be able to decide whether it's hardware or software at fault?
- If the hardware is proven to be OK, what am I then leaving out?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Karmic Koala Doesn't 'find' ATI Video Card

Feb 7, 2010

I'm trying to get the screen graphics working correctly on a newly purchased ACER Aspire 7740G laptop. It has a 17.3" 16:9 screen with an ATI Radeon Mobility HD5470 512MB graphics card.

The command LSPCI in Terminal gives.....

"02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Device 68e0"

I've also uploaded /var/ log/ xorg.0.log.

In System/Preferences/Display the pink coloured monitor screen has 'UNKNOWN' displayed on it with only 3 resolutions available.

I installed the ATI Catalyst Control centre but when it initialises, it produces an error saying that there is no driver installed - I thought the XORG log shows that the driver is installed.

The command ATICONFIG in Terminal reports.........

"aticonfig: No supported adapters detected" !

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Uninstalling Video Card Driver / Black Screen

Jan 4, 2011

I recently swapped a hard drive from another computer I was using. The previous computer had nVidia video card (i think it was 9500? something like that), and the new computer has an ATI Radeon 4200 HD video card. Now, when I boot it up on my new comp using the same hard drive, I get a black screen and my monitor just switches from digital, analog, hdmi. I'm guessing that the video card drivers are still installed, but I cannot switch back the hard drive since my other comp is far away from where I live. If I boot up with ubuntu CD however, it loads fine.

I have many important files on the previous install though, and I'm not sure how to get to it. I wouldnt mind reinstalling ubuntu as long as I can get those files back.
