OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Cheeze Works Great HP 4510s?

Jun 6, 2010

Cheese seems to work great OOB on my HP probook 4510s using the internal webcam and OpenSuSE11.1 (11.2/11.3.6 don't install). Anyway - I would really like to have a simple way to send either the video stream or periodic snapshots out over the internet, either to a website or a chat client or? I am going to be doing a field experiment and will want folks to be able to see what I'm doing. I have set up servers before and it can get way too complicated for the amount of time I have left to get this going..

i'm running ubuntu 8.04 with firefox 3.6.6 and the add-on shockwave flash 9.0 r277. my video works great at sites like videos, abcnews.com, and cbsnews.com. but it does not work at msnbc.com. i just get a blank, black panel with the label "msnbc.com video player" at the top.

the problem appears unique to the msnbc.com web site. any idea what it could be? i've used other machines running different versions of ubuntu and ff and have had no problems viewing msnbc.com video.

Networking :: Eth0 Works Great - Eth1 Not Working ?

May 14, 2010

Ok, so eth0 is up and working great. eth1, however, comes up with a link light, however the packet counters in ifconfig remain at 0. Appears that eth1 isn't working.

Here's my setup:

-Dell latitude CPi laptop with 2 PCMCIA network cards and no built-in ethernet.
-Slackware v11
-eth0 is connected inside my router on my 192 network. Static address with good connectivity
-eth1 is connected on the other side of my router in promiscuous mode in order to listen to the traffic coming into my network.

Troubleshooting so far: I have switched the pcmcia cards between slots and regardless of which card is in eth0 or eth1, eth0 works and eth1 does not. I have also switched the card dongle between cards as well as the ethernet cabling between the cards. With any of the combinations eth0 works like a champ but eth1 does not, so I think I've ruled out hardware problems.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Bootup After Install But LiveCD Works Great

Feb 10, 2011

No Bootup just a Black Screen with a frozen cursor after install, but LIVE CD works in 1024x768 mode? Well, I have a Sony Bravia 32xTV with HDMI input coming out of a ZOTAC nvidia type of card. The live CD will recognize the HDMI graphics card and Sony TV/monitor and thus works like Ubuntu normally does. But when I go to install to a hard drive and try to boot up I get just a Black Screen with a frozen cursor. I even have another Ubuntu 8.04 version running on the Sony Bravia TV , so no problem with TV end of things. what do I do now, oh great Ubuntu gurus out there in cyberland? what could I possibly do , what do I read, where do I go , what, where, who, how, when ,which way?

Debian :: BlueZ 4.60-1 Works Great And After A Week It Segfaults And Won't Start?

Apr 27, 2010

I have been using a ARM device with 512MB ram and flash to send messages via Bluetooth to everyone in the proximity. I am doing this with OpenProximity (Python) and it worked for the last week, it did stop for two times but since I didn't have time to find the cause, I just rebooted it (Windows style ) and it worked again, but suddenly it stopped working again last Saturday. When I did /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart it did not say it failed or something, but when I did /etc/init.d/bluetooth status it said "bluetooth is not running ... failed!". This is what I got in the syslog:

Code:
Apr 27 13:52:45 debian bluetoothd[31243]: Bluetooth daemon 4.60
Apr 27 13:52:45 debian bluetoothd[31243]: Starting SDP server
Apr 27 13:52:45 debian bluetoothd[31243]: Starting experimental netlink support
Apr 27 13:52:45 debian bluetoothd[31243]: Failed to find Bluetooth netlink family
Apr 27 13:52:45 debian bluetoothd[31243]: Failed to init netlink plugin
Apr 27 13:52:45 debian bluetoothd[31243]: Can't create GN bridge

[Code]...

You'll probably note that the first message is version 4.60 and the second one 4.63, this is because I tried to upgrade, but that did not work completely, but the error above is the same as first before the upgrade.

Don't know if it matters, but I am using Debian Squeeze and the output of uname -a is: Linux debian 2.6.32.2 #1 PREEMPT Fri Dec 18 22:54:28 MST 2009 armv5tel GNU/Linux. Hope someone know how this could happen suddenly, and even better, knows how to fix it

EDIT: Forgot to say, I am using a SENA Parani UD100 Bluetooth USB Adapter which uses the Toshiba Bluetooth stack.

UPDATE: It won't crash until the Bluetooth stick is inserted, so it should be a driver problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid All Works Great - Except Software Center/synaptic

Apr 30, 2010

Using Lucid Lynx 10.04. Is your software center/ synaptic package manager working properly for you?

I just got Lucid installed after some minor troubles last night, but with the help of great people, I have it installed now (thank you!) and it all *ok, most* works beautifully!

However, I have been downloading/installing "Ubuntu restricted extras" , for the last 20 minutes now, and it is only at 12% .

In karmic koala, these things happened pretty quickly, but now it is just soooper slooooowww.

Before I started the restricted extras.. I installed VLC player, and that took about 15 minutes just for that. and now it is nowhere to be found!

It does not show in USC under installed software, nor does it show in synaptic..and it is in no menu, anywhere.

Speaking of synaptic...I cant get VLC, or Ubuntu restricted extras to show up, it does not 'find' them when I type their name into the search bar..it acts as if they don't exist.

I havent attempted to find, or install anything else that I had on my karmic box yet...only these 2 things, vlc and restricted extras....and both have been ..well.....painfully slow..... and vlc doesnt even seem to have installed, after it took 15-20 minutes, and said it was finished.

If this was "back to normal"...this would definitely be the best OS i have ever seen/used.

OpenSUSE Install :: X11 Fails On HP Pavilion Dv7?

Mar 22, 2011

I did a clean install, replacing 11.3 with 11.4 (BTW, why couldn't 11.4 recognize a ext4 partition??). When I boot, the cursor is a garbage block in the center of the screen. When I move, the cursor disappears. The display never progresses past the splash and no progress bar appears. When I boot in safemode, it works, but the display is slow and jerky. This is such a show stopper for me that I had to revert to 11.3 which does not like my touchpad.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 On HP Pavilion Preloaded With Windows7?

Apr 23, 2010

Recently I tried to install openSUSE 11.2 on my HP Pavilion dv6-2125tx notebook PC which comes preloaded with Windows7. I used a DVD to install the openSUSE. Before installation, I created partitions on my hard drive for root, /home and swap by shrinking the C volume. This is the only way to create partitions on my laptop. I used NTFS filesystem during format of these partitions. During installation, the first error message that appeared was YaST error saying that it could not format the partitions though it was allowing me to set mount points and filesystems for the partitions I had created. The next problem was swap. I was not able to see the mount point and F (for format) for the swap partition. However when I continued by ignoring the warning for swap there was a partition for swap and it was the same partition I wanted to have for swap. So, I clicked the Install button. The next problem was grub error 17: cannot mount the partition. And then when I continued ignoring this too, the computer did not get any of the OSes saying that BOOTMGR (BOOT MANAGER) is missing. I had no options left but to recover it using recovery disks of my laptop.I searched a bit on the internet and found that grub error 17 happens if the corresponding partition exists but the filesystem is not recognized by the GRUB.

I concluded that it was happening bacause YaST was unable to format any of partitions with the filesystem selected. So in my next attempt, I formatted the partitions in FAT32 filesystem in Windows which I think GRUB can recognize. I did that because even if YAST would be unable to format the partition the filesystem could be recognized by GRUB.And I think that happened but I got a new error this time. The grub error 22.Now I don't know what to do. One thing that I am expecting is that my hard drive cannot be partitioned in the correct way for linux. I can only shrink the volume and create logical partitions only from one dynamic partition c. And that may be the reason YaST could not format the partitions in the correct filesystem and inturn the grub error is happening.

I did download the wireless driver from the HP site, but it's a .exe file. Anyone had any luck setting up this or a similar HP laptop. I couldn't find this model on the HCL/Laptops/HP - openSUSE page, but it seems OpenSUSE supports wireless other HP Pavilion models.

OpenSUSE Network :: HP Pavilion DV7-1261wm Wireless Not Working?

When I press the red LED touch button below the screen to turn it on, nothing happens. Also the LED that indicates that the wireless is on stays red and does not turn blue. I have dual boot on and tested it under Windows 7 where everything works fine, so I know the internal wireless card and touch key is working. Just not in OpenSuse. I am using the KDE plasma desktop.

Ubuntu :: Great Games For Best Operating System Ever

Dec 2, 2010

I am not a programmer or a game developer. I would even use the term "computer geek" very loosely cause any problems I have I google and usually find the solution here. That being said I am not sure the proper location for this discussion and I am not an expert on the subject but I ran across an article by a game developer who ported to Linux and commented as to why more developers don't. [URL]. Before all sorts of flaming responses get written i would like to say that Linux
(A) does need more games
(B) developers obviously have a reason for not porting
(C) If you ever want that to happen we need to turn reasons against into reasons for.

I know I am not a programmer and don't know a whole lot about Linux but I read programmer's talking about problems with too many distro's and too many different window systems etc., a lot. would it be possible to create a front-end that would act like a router for games, like the game puts out audio and the front end sends it to alsa it puts out video and the front end sends it to the nvidia driver. something where how it talks to gnome or kde or any other window manager and any other distro is different but how it talks to the game is always the same. If the answer to what I have said is no how could this problem be solved how could a developer create software that could be installed no problems on various platforms without them creating 100's of different versions of the game. One package one installer no mess. Linux is so incredibly stable there must be a way for it to be easier to write a game for Linux then for windows.

Ubuntu Networking :: Atheros AR928X - Great On 10.10 But Bust On 11.04

May 2, 2011

I was doing some testing on my CR-48 notebook, which seemed to be very slow wirelessly when running Ubuntu 11.04. I cracked it open and decided to swap out the wireless cards with an Intel Wifi Link 1000 card I had in my other laptop, which is a Dell Latitude. I then began to do some speed testing, using speedtest.net. I tested each laptop 5 times for each card, so I did 20 tests total.

5 - CR-48 - Intel
5 - CR-48 - Atheros
5 - Latitude - Intel
5 - Latitude - Atheros

The results I think speak for themselves. While the Atheros card no doubt *works*, it doesn't work as efficiently as the Intel card I tried. I also noticed if I shut off my wireless security, my speeds drastically improved on the Atheros card. On my router (WRT54G) I used both mixed mode, G-only mode, WPA, WPA2 and a mixture of TKIP, AES, and TKIP+AES encryption. My results were the same across the board unless I took off security.

Ubuntu :: "Multiple Page-IO Submissions" For Insanely Great EXT4 Performance

May 10, 2011

Coming in Linux 2.6.39 but probably really here under your nose in 2.6.38: mblk_io_submit
Ext4 will now by default use the "Multiple Page-IO Submissions" mblk_io_submit option, which is said to considerably improve performance and scalability. The code behind it was already added to the kernel with version 2.6.37; however, just before this Linux version was finalised, the Ext developers disabled the function by default because it caused data corruption in certain situations; the responsible bug was fixed in the stabilisation phase of 2.6.38.So is that true? Does 2.6.38 have a deactivated-but-perfectly-usable EXT4 file system performance option by the name of mblk_io_submit? On Natty (well really Lucid running a back-port of 2.6.38 but Natty should be even easier) I added it to /etc/fstab like this:

Code:

/dev/mapper/vg0-lv0 / ext4 mblk_io_submit,relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1

and rebooted. The system (really a VM) had no issues at all

Code:

$ dmesg | grep -i ext4

OpenSUSE :: Compose Key Works Only Partially?

Jun 4, 2010

My recent install of 11.2/KDE on a laptop suffers from a strange misbehaviour of the compose key (I have declared the Windows and Menu keys as Compose). It appears that two different sets of composing sequences are active, depending on the application.

I have to explain that I use a lot of unusual characters on a regular basis and therefore keep adding more sequences to /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose. I have even redeclared a couple of predefined sequences to values that are more useful for me. All these work fine, for example in a terminal window (konsole or xterm) or in konqueror, or even in OpenOffice.

However, other applictions seam only able to handle the default set of Compose sequences. This applies, for example, to Firefox or Gimp. It does not matter whether they are invoked from the command line or from a desktop icon. I tried both the Firefox shipped with OpenSuse, and a download from mozilla.org: Same result.

I tried to delete other Compose files from /usr/share/X11/locale/* but it did not help. I wonder where the default rules are actually found after deleting all the Compose files, even if (for some reason) the locales have changed in these applications.
