Ubuntu Multimedia :: MythTV Backend Can't Find Capture Card?
Feb 7, 2010
I'm trying to setup Mythbuntu on a computer connected to a TV. I have bought an USB DVB-T Receiver, named WandTV. According to LinuxTV; WandTV, aka Shenzhen Forward Video EzTV859, is supported in the Linux kernel.
When I try to setup the mythTV backend I'm being asked of what card type I have. I guess the answer to that is "DVB DTV capture card (v3.x)", but no matter what I choose, it can't find any devices.
I'm pretty sure /dev/hidraw0 is the receiver, can I use that to setup the backend?

What kind of tuner I need. do I pick up ntsc, atsc, or something else? My cable comes from the wall to the tv, there is no box receiver.
I have had real bad luck with the acermedia duet and the hauppage hvr-1250. Aperently, the aver duet has 0 support and I can't get the hvr-1250 to work. I'm running mythbuntu 10.04. I can't even get avi's I downloaded to play in mythtv.

I had a dedicated HTPC box running Mythbuntu 11.04 (MythTV 0.24.1, I believe) that was both a master backend and frontend. I was also running a separate box (server 10.04) as a file server, print server, etc. Very recently I decided to try to migrate the backend duties and database from the HTPC box to the server so that I only need to have one machine running 24/7. So, on the server, I installed mythtv-backend-master from the repository, which for 10.04 is version 0.23.0+fixes. You might have seen this one coming... when I try to import the database from the Mythbuntu box into the server's MythTV installation, I get an error message saying the database schema (1264) is newer than expected (1254).
So, I'm wondering about my options at this point. Is it reasonable to install the same version of MythTV on the server? What would be the best way of going about that?
Is there a way to easily revert the database schema to the earlier version that's required?
Will I just need to start over with a new database? (Hopefully not this one.)
Other options I haven't thought of?

I have an old Fisher VHS player with the old 'antenna' connection [one wire] to the TV. It does still work. I connect this to an old Hauppauge 250 pvr card in a box running Ubuntu 10-10.
I want to be able to put old tapes on my disk drive.
Working mainly with MythTv, I can not get it to work. The hardware seems to be working as I have options for tuner1 and other inputs. As channel 4 is no longer 'broadcast' I can't scan for it even with the VCR running.
Would someone please hold my hand an provide the necessary steps to get MythTv working or an alternative.
I have read the five similar threads and numerous other google hits but can't find what I need. Part of my problem is I am also new to Ubuntu and jumping in an out of terminal sessions is no where near what I grew up with in Slackware.

When I reboot my computer I cannot see my Tuner card until I manually restart the MythTV backend.
the problem is that the backend is being started before the drivers to the tuner card (HVR-2250). is there a way to change this.
I figure I should ask here as more people know there way around start up commands. I figure the easiest thing to do is to edit this file:
Code:
/etc/init/mythtv-backend.conf
I would think adding a sleep or wait command would do the trick?

why upstart is broken in 10.04? The old init of /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend start worked fine in 9.10.
$ start mythtv-backend

I can't get mythtv to play television with my Hauppauge HVR-850 tv card. I was able to view tv in mplayer, so I know that the card is working. The tv signal is broadcast only (no cable). I had to set the card type to DVB DTV capture card (v3.x) to get mythtv-setup to successfully scan. I was able to successfully scan both with a "full scan" and with a channels.conf file that I had generated earlier when tinkering tv in mplayer. Unfortunately, the mythtv frontend failed to play any live tv. It said "Error: MythTV is using all inputs, but there are no active recordings?"

I have been trying to put together a mythbox for myself. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 and the newest version of the Mythbox backend. My capture card that I am having issues with is a Hauppauge Wintv-HVR-1850 card, I followed the instructions on installation from linuxtv.org and did not get any errors. I tried to set up Mythtv and it didn't get a signal and couldn't find any channels. I would like to know if my card is even working so I tried using xawtv but still could not get a signal from my card.
how I can verify that my card is installed correctly?

I previously had my bt878 capture card setup with Ubuntu 10.04 and it worked fine with Zoneminder. However, after having done a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04, the card causes Ubuntu to freeze whenever I attempt to view the image in a viewing program (happens in tvtime, Cheese and Zoneminder)I have added bttv and bt878 into /etc/modprobe.d/options like before, and have also added options bttv card=77 tuner=-1 into bttv.conf in the same directory (had to create bttv.conf)The freeze causes the whole computer to lock up, and nothing on the keyboard or mouse is responsive, and involes having to do a hard restart. The only difference I can see from before, is that I have installed all of the latest updates with Update Manager, so maybe a new update is causing these problems?Output of dmesg grep bttv
Code:
[ 18.149815] bttv: driver version 0.9.18 loaded
[ 18.149826] bttv: using 8 buffers with 2080k (520 pages) each for capture

Does anyone know an Ubuntu 10.10 compatible video capture card that has composite connections for video and audio (yellow, red and white)? It must be external and do its own processing so it doesn't use the computer's own CPU. I intend to capture a live stream and have the Ubuntu PC serve it to other computers. I may use VLC or MythTV. I have looked on various related sites but finding a compatible USB one which does its own decoding is hard to find.

Recently I had to replace my Hauppauge HVR-1600 (it was doing everything I wanted it to do but after a few years burned out) and decided to get the HVR-2250. Before purchasing I checked the forums and noticed that there was quite a bit of support and most everyone managed to get it working so I thought it would be a good idea.
The problem I have now is that, though lspci shows the card as Multimedia controller: Philips Semiconductors Device 7164 (rev 81); however, when trying to setup mythtv-backend, the card does not show up under the "capture card" section. After a few hours of research, I came across this thread and it seemed to be general consensus that the method worked so I tried it. Still no luck.I ended up formatting, fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 and then installed MythTV and still nothing. Not really sure where to go from here.

When an SD card is inserted before/at boot time, everything works fine, meaning recognized by kernel and mounted to userspace. When an SD card is inserted after boot time, the kernel doesn't 'see' the hardware change not triggered, so no block device /dev/mmcblk0{p1}, so nothing to mount. This behavior is not openSuSE specific, when booting SystemRescueCD-2.0.1, the same behavior is noticed.SD card inserted after booting:

OS of this system: Ubuntu 9.10 Server
Okay so i have a Hauppage card, not sure exactly which one, under lspci it is:
Quote:
02:01.0 Multimedia video controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture (rev 11)
02:01.1 Multimedia controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture (rev 11)
lsmod lists:

tvaudio 25884 0
snd_intel8x0 30168 0
tda7432 5016 0
snd_ac97_codec 101216 1 snd_intel8x0
code...
How do I go about getting this working? --I'm trying to make sure the card works before I mess with myth-setup anymore.
Note: in MythTV I don't get the "Scan Channels" option, so I'm not sure what to do there.Note: Cable source is my college campus cable.

I want to install GTK+. I see there are also numerous dependencies, which i've been slowly tackling, and the Cairo package has been particularly difficult. It claims the following upon ./configure --prefix=/usr configure: WARNING: Could not find libpng in the pkg-config search path checking whether cairo's PNG backend could be enabled... no configure: error: requested PNG backend could not be enabled I've done some searching and found that libpng.pc is in my /usr/lib/pkgconfig/ directory and that the following commands don't do the trick:
PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/lib/pkgconfig
export PKG_CONFIG_PATH

I'm trying to get the screen graphics working correctly on a newly purchased ACER Aspire 7740G laptop. It has a 17.3" 16:9 screen with an ATI Radeon Mobility HD5470 512MB graphics card.
The command LSPCI in Terminal gives.....
"02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Device 68e0"
I've also uploaded /var/ log/ xorg.0.log.
In System/Preferences/Display the pink coloured monitor screen has 'UNKNOWN' displayed on it with only 3 resolutions available.
I installed the ATI Catalyst Control centre but when it initialises, it produces an error saying that there is no driver installed - I thought the XORG log shows that the driver is installed.
The command ATICONFIG in Terminal reports.........
"aticonfig: No supported adapters detected" !

After overcomming a lot of difficulties, my MythTV (Via Epia 10000EG with Hauppauge PVR 500 card) worked with Mythbuntu 9.04. Last year it crashed and I had no time to spare to rebuild it.
Last couple of weeks I had more time and downloaded and tried to install Mythbuntu 10.10. Everything seems to be installed ok, but I get no picture in MythTV when I select "Watch TV" and no picture when I try to record something. When watching TV, the message "Please wait" appears for appr. 5 secs and then the system returns to the menu.
I installed Mythbuntu 10.10 and am using the provided IVTV drivers.
Dmesg and lspci give no errors, every seems to be in order, IVTV drivers are loaded, initialized and errorfree. Cat /dev/video0 gives me static in MPLAYER. The MythTV backendlog doesn't even give a message, the frontend log just says there is no picture...
There seems to be an error between the back and frontend. I checked the settings in capturecards, TV sources, channel edits, etc, etc, but I can't find it.
