View 1 RepliesI'm on 10.04. Every dvd ripper I've tried so far has failed in one or another. I have all restricted extras and medibuntu codecs installed.
DVD::Rip either throws an error message or stops ripping somewhere through the process
Handbrake only finds some of the dvd titles
OGM rip gives an "Unknown error"
Acidrip says "mencoder interrupted by user"
I have my laptop that is a full time Linux box. (My desktop system which is for gaming is still a windows box). I have been using Ubuntu for about a year now, and while it is a wonderful system, I am getting restless to try something new. The one thing I dislike about Ubuntu is that I really don't like Gnome (personal preference, I can see why some like it). So I was wondering what would be a good Distribution(s) that I can download and play with so see what KDE has done in the last year and perhaps play with Xfce. I have run SUSE and Ubuntu in the past.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo my dad had me build this file server at his studio. His old server was a Mac running OS X with some backup software called 'Retrospect'.
He has two backup drives - two identical 2-terabyte external drives. Each week he brings in one, plugs it into the server and at a scheduled time it would start the backup. The following week he'd bring in the other drive and backup to that - swapping each week. If the drive was missing at the time of backup, Restrospect would display a message saying it needs the drive to do the backup.
Personally I don't really like the fact that he's relying on himself or someone else to plug in the drives and do the backups, but he's paranoid that a disaster could occur in which the computer gets destroyed (maybe a comet hitting his studio.).
what I'm wondering is - is there some sort of backup software out there for Linux with a GUI that can just show current backup progress (if one is occurring) and allow you to configure how the backups can occur? I can make the window pop-up automatically using cron I guess, after which it can be closed by someone in the studio.
I'm guessing maybe a front end for rsync would be good, but I haven't seen any that do anything besides letting you configure rsync. P.S. I guess I could check if the drive is there by doing a grep on blkid for whatever the backup drive's UUID is to check if it's there.
Started with a clean install, with new GeForce 6200 video card installed. Very impressed that when I tried to activate compiz, it informed me that I must download and install the relevant drivers - and it provided me with a 'one click' install! Now I'm running the latest driver (195) - well done guys!Anyway, happy as I am with a no-fuss install, I'd like to know what is everyones pick of CD ripper to MP3?
I've downloaded Asunder, but this seems very slow in comparison to other Windows-based apps I've tried.I wanted to try Sound Juicer, but unfortunately it requires some code to change from VBR to CBR @ 320kbps.
All I'd like to reliably do is rip a few audio CDs. SoundKonverter - doesn't work at all. Log tells me nothing SoundJuicer - OK for one disk. Usually crashes when the read disk is ejected and attempts are made to read the next. Failing that, it will read a few tracks and then lock up. K3B - Only rips first disk, then the progress window (form) locks up at 100%. Cancel button doesn't work. Need to kill task.
RipOff - works OK, but so slow... life's too short goobox - locks up before it even reads the disk and despite its claims I don't think it's a "rip" tool anyway.
Is it possible to install a bluray ripper via the terminal that can be used via the terminal?
I'm using xbmc and from what I've read it's not possible in the frontend.
I'm trying to install Rubyripper into Maverick using these guidelines: [URL]
But I get this error message in terminal:
Code:
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/aheck/ppa/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/aheck/ppa/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. Presumably because it can't find the package. But what do I do next? or is there an alternative way to install?
I'm looking for the best way to pull some video files off of DVDs onto the desktop. These are not copyright protected. I don't want a program that plays the movie and then make a duplicate like most windows programs these are TOO slow. Also if I could shrink and change the format that would be a huge bonus.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm vaguely remembering a video stream ripper that was open source and could be compiled for linux, mac, and windows. It's name ended with ++ and I can't remember anything else Basically, it was like StreamTransport but open source and multiprotocol capable. Can anybody help me find it again? I'd be open to alternatives too of course! My basic need is to rip anything being rendered by my video card.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAll my friends say, OpenSuse is the best distro. I have tried it, but I just can't make it work for me. I have a lot of problems touchpad not working properly, wireless, it crashes. It looks good, but I need a distro which will work on my dell Vostro 1700. I have found Ubuntu (gnome) best for my laptop, but I would like to try (KDE) something more polished like OpenSuse. A distro which works like a charm.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI like the convenience of having a music player that manages the placement of my music files based on the tags of the files, sorting into a root music folder with Artist/Album/01 - Track Title.mp3 sort of hierarchy. Previously, I was using Banshee for this feature, as even most of the other gui music players don't have this library management feature. Now, I've been trying to use console-based applications, and I have been using mpd + ncmpcpp fairly successfully. When I download new music, it is downloaded to a specific folder, and that's not part of my music collection. My previous workflow would be to open a gui filemanager at the downloaded folder, and drag and drop those songs onto banshee, which would then make a copy of those files in my library hierarchy. Currently, I'm doing the same thing, using Banshee only as a sort of import program, then closing it and updating my mpd database, and there we go.
If at all possible, I'd like to automate this to something where I can define a watch folder, and when some magical program sees new music in said watch folder, it identifies the correct place for the files to be copied into my heirarchy, renaming folders and files to the correct format. I know I've written a lot describing, but I don't actually think this too uncommon a task, and I'm wondering if anyone has a solution for my problem.
Does any one know of a good claymation software that will allow me to take pictures and add them as one frame at a time, edit them, add in an audio track, and then export it?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am elevating this thread up a level from [url] . Ubuntu 9.10 no longer streams without the screen pausing and going black every 2 minutes! Our product was just going into production and now we need to hopefully find a version of Ubuntu that streams video! We couldn't go with Unbuntu 10.04 because the video streaming was 30% slower than 9.10.

View 1 Replies View RelatedYou may all know about Total Video Converter, Any Video Converter and such used in Windows, where you chose codecs, like i want to convert to mp4 for my phone.
But.. there's one specific thing I'm looking for that most don't seem to have. Cutting.
I need for example, to cut from 24:00 to 30:00, that is the only part i want cut and converted to mp4 ready for my phone.
Like for instance, if I have Ubuntu Lucid Lynx installed with XFCE, and it has an applications made for XFCE. will the applications also work on say some other distro like, Wolvix, that is an XFCE-based distro~????
What I am trying to say is: Do applications that are made for XFCE, work on ANY distro that has XFCE installed?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI love foobar 2000 but I'm always trying to shy away from windows apps. What are your recommendations as "good" replacements for foobar 2000? So far I have tried:
Amarok - Crashes all the time, and keeps saying it can't play mp3s. Used to love this app, but seems broken for me now. Even if I reinstall it.
Rhythmbox - Great, but reports the wrong bitrate on all my songs. It is very important for me to know the correct bitrate for uploading to certain sites.
Audacious - Way to simple and winamp like.
Bangarang - No.
i am in the videos business and have been for a while[url] and i need a good screen recorder for the task. fraps worked fine in windows, now i need something similar. i should also mention that i have tried using recordmyscreen and it just fails to render, sticking at 0%.
