Ubuntu Multimedia :: Crackling Sound In 11.04, Already Searched For Solutions?

May 15, 2011

I've been through what I could find in searches here, but nothing fixed the problem so far. Here's the situation: I am using Ubuntu Natty 11.04, dual booting. So I know the sound is fine on the XP system, and also works crisp and clear on my Vista laptop sitting next to me. I've tried the sound through Banshee, Amarok and Exaile all with the same crackling as if the file was ripped off a bad CD. I'll repeat that I've tested the speakers, and also the jack port (being that there are two on my PC) so I am fairly certain it is an issue with Ubuntu. Here is the ALSA information report: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=ad...8b8d1ee19905a5

It's not a problem with PCM- the crackling will go away if the level on PCM is like 30~ but then the sound is very quiet even with Master and speaker volume at 100, at which point you can still make out the crackling.

Networking :: Good Open Source Network / Server Monitoring Tool

Feb 19, 2010

Any easy to install/configure network/server monitoring tool? PLease note I'm looking for something of little lightweight here (Not something like zenoss) But I'd still like to get performance graphs and event notifying alerts. Also note this is to monitor less than 50 servers and perhaps a firewall or 2.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Use Various Boot-to-LiveCD Solutions

Aug 28, 2010

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 this past week. Foolishly, I tried to finish it quickly, and let grub fiddle with my Vista volume, sdb1. I realized it after I agreed. Shucks! Now, my computer won't boot unless I go to the ROM. A bit of history, my original 9.10 install was on a formerly dual boot 160 Gig IDE drive. This one was really just my main Ubuntu drive (sba1). I would have gladly gotten rid of the useless NTFS side of it, but never wanted to bother. The terabyte SATA drive is my Vista volume (and general data drive). It has no Ubuntu nothing on it. When I wanted to boot to Vista, I would boot to sda1 via GRUB2 and then select Vista. It would then come up to the Vista Bootloader, and I'd select Vista and boom, things worked fine. Then I did my ugrade. Somehow, the original grub on sda1 got messed up. I have no idea how. I get the somewhat familiar error: the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found and unceremoniously dumped to a grub rescue>_ prompt. Great! I can enter the ROM and tell it to boot from sdb1, then grub comes up exactly like before and I can select Ubuntu and 10.04 comes up!

So my MBR on sdb1 has now been ruined by GRUB2. Now I know I should never have allowed GRUB to write to sdb1, but why did it also mess up sda1?To make matters worse, I can't use the various boot-to-LiveCD solutions rather common out there. I downloaded the ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso and burned it. But since I got my new 25" monitor for Christmas, I guess it's too much for the poor old LiveCD disk. I upgraded via the Update Manager, so the video wasn't an issue. Now, when I boot from the LiveCD, the screen turns black and that's it. Take the disk out, reboot, and you're back to the ROM or that beautiful grub rescue>

Ubuntu Servers :: Small Office Network OpenLDAP Or Other Solutions

Jul 16, 2010

Small office... 20-30 computers all windows based. xp/vista/windows 7. 3 Servers running ubuntu 10.04... 1 domain controller, and two file servers with samba. We want to be able to login once in the morning, and then not have to worry about users/passwords at all throughout the day. So I was thinking that I could setup a PDC and then make the two filservers both BDC's and use ldap to authenticate everything. Would this even work out? and is there a better way to do it?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Any Good Replacement For Foobar 2000?

Oct 7, 2010

I love foobar 2000 but I'm always trying to shy away from windows apps. What are your recommendations as "good" replacements for foobar 2000? So far I have tried:
Amarok - Crashes all the time, and keeps saying it can't play mp3s. Used to love this app, but seems broken for me now. Even if I reinstall it.
Rhythmbox - Great, but reports the wrong bitrate on all my songs. It is very important for me to know the correct bitrate for uploading to certain sites.
Audacious - Way to simple and winamp like.
Bangarang - No.
