I'm trying to install Rubyripper into Maverick using these guidelines: [URL]
But I get this error message in terminal:

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. Presumably because it can't find the package. But what do I do next? or is there an alternative way to install?
I've been using rubyripper quite happily on Karmic, now I've moved to Lucid and discovered a bit of an issue. rubyripper will pause for several minutes between tracks with ruby 1.8. If I upgrade to ruby 1.9.1 the gui client won't run due to an issue with libgtk2-ruby not being available for 1.9.1.
The cli version of rubyripper under 1.9.1 is blazingly fast, so that is what I'm using at the moment, but I do prefer the gui.
Anyone have any insight into this? Googling suggests there may be a bug in ruby 1.8.7 that caused the long pauses, but it was supposed to have been fixed in 1.8.7.249 i.e. the default Lucid version.
I'm on 10.04. Every dvd ripper I've tried so far has failed in one or another. I have all restricted extras and medibuntu codecs installed. DVD::Rip either throws an error message or stops ripping somewhere through the process Handbrake only finds some of the dvd titles OGM rip gives an "Unknown error" Acidrip says "mencoder interrupted by user"
Started with a clean install, with new GeForce 6200 video card installed. Very impressed that when I tried to activate compiz, it informed me that I must download and install the relevant drivers - and it provided me with a 'one click' install! Now I'm running the latest driver (195) - well done guys!Anyway, happy as I am with a no-fuss install, I'd like to know what is everyones pick of CD ripper to MP3?
I've downloaded Asunder, but this seems very slow in comparison to other Windows-based apps I've tried.I wanted to try Sound Juicer, but unfortunately it requires some code to change from VBR to CBR @ 320kbps.
All I'd like to reliably do is rip a few audio CDs. SoundKonverter - doesn't work at all. Log tells me nothing SoundJuicer - OK for one disk. Usually crashes when the read disk is ejected and attempts are made to read the next. Failing that, it will read a few tracks and then lock up. K3B - Only rips first disk, then the progress window (form) locks up at 100%. Cancel button doesn't work. Need to kill task.
RipOff - works OK, but so slow... life's too short goobox - locks up before it even reads the disk and despite its claims I don't think it's a "rip" tool anyway.
I'm looking for the best way to pull some video files off of DVDs onto the desktop. These are not copyright protected. I don't want a program that plays the movie and then make a duplicate like most windows programs these are TOO slow. Also if I could shrink and change the format that would be a huge bonus.
I'm vaguely remembering a video stream ripper that was open source and could be compiled for linux, mac, and windows. It's name ended with ++ and I can't remember anything else Basically, it was like StreamTransport but open source and multiprotocol capable. Can anybody help me find it again? I'd be open to alternatives too of course! My basic need is to rip anything being rendered by my video card.
There are a few things not working properly. Ruby version manager seems ok but untill i get working with ruby i don't know if it is working properly. One thing that is not there is irb Interactive ruby is not available according the the message i get.
Well i have no idea what readline is but i did everything that is on that webpage referance page [url]. I have got a lot of progress and learned heaps about linux shell and bash terminal. The thing is i need to get this going and have tried feenode but it is very foreign and how it works i do not have a clue. I have got 2 things resolved so far through this forum but using other threads in it. i need to get irb going before i can progress to using ruby on Rails properly.
I am using a Eeepc running ubuntu easy peasy its version 9.04 of ubuntu. I need the whole of rails to work and want to get a handle on using ruby version manager along with the apache stack with mysql/phpmyadmin and am using this as a dummy run for setting up a development system.
tried to install drivers for FX 5500 today, the one that Ubuntu recommended (173) and the current version (260). Both installs failed when it tried to set up python-support. Returned an exit status of "10". I don't know what that means. I could really use some help, because I just installed UT2K4, and without the driver, I can't play it. I'm running the latest release, as noted in the thread title. Dunno if it helps, but it was a clean install, because an alternate iso upgrade failed and mucked up 10.04.

However, when I try to install Rails I get an error code...
It seems like gem can't access http://gems.rubyforge.org/gems/rake-0.8.7.gem for some reason, but when I try to go directly to that address I get the option to download it. Any ideas how to get around this problem?
I'm thinking if I can somehow tell gem to look for the file locally I can download it and install rails that way.
==========NOTE: subsequent to posting, I attempted to use the gem 'mysql' and it worked. This is odd considering all the errors that were emitted below. Anyway, I can proceed with my study.==========

I am relatively new to Ubuntu and may have a security breech. I was recently looking over synaptics installed packages on my PC and noticed JOHN installed on my system. This was never installed by me nor do I think this entire APP is a dependency of something that may have been installed.My questions are... Has my system been compromised? I use maverick 64bit and banshee crashes a few seconds after I start the program, this is what I get: "Got a SIGSEGV while executing native code. This usually indicates a fatal error in the mono runtime or one of the native libraries used by your application." I deleted the banshee folder in .configure but every time the library is loaded the problem starts again.
Using Kubuntu Maverick. It's probably all my fault but I cannot get CD's to play. Amarok: for the life of me, I cannot understand how to get CDs to play. In Lucid Lynx CD playing was unusable because it would crash by the second or third song; now, I cannot even get the program to start playing my CD. KsCD: worked in Lucid Lynx, crashes in Maverick. KPlayer: it does play the CD, but it does so jerkily, that is, it stops every 10-15 seconds. Unusable. Kubuntu is not a crappy OS that cannot even play a CD.
The subject of this post is actually a question e.g. is there a mp3 ripper that allows the bitrate to be modified. I have looked at cdparanioa, which I believe is the foundation of most of the Linux rippers, but it does not allow modification of the bitrate. I realise I could ripper in flacc format but I have an mp3 player as does my grandaughter so I need the mp3 format. Incidentally is there a player(portable) that will play flacc encoded files?
