The first need is to have easy cross system compatibility. Meaning Windows included. Audio/Video would be a plus, but it is not a must. I need something that goes through SSL or something like that and not in plain view.

I am looking for a good alternative to Skype. I would like to have video and voice calls with a family member who uses MS XP but would like to avoid Skype if possible. Does anyone know of a good client with good video and voice quality that will work on both platforms. I'd like it to use open standards so at least we can use different OS specific clients if one is not available for both platforms. Googling hasn't yielded much and some of the results refer to really old (~2006) articles or apps. I hope I'm not doomed to using Skype. I've resisted so long with using SIP clients for voice but am stumped now that I want to include video.

Are there any viable alternatives to mythtv? I find the setup to be very cumbersome and the keyboard interface is a poor second to Windows Media Player for a basic PVR system on a desktop computer.
Mythtv seems an overkill for what I require, just to simply watch TV using my DVB-T input and record shows when I'm away from home.

I want to do some amateur voice over works. I need an audio editor that can also play the video simultaneously to sync with the character's lip movements. The problem is my video sources are in h264 mkv, I guess it is not very friendly with many softwares.
Here's what I've searched (tried some of them too) and the results:LiVES -> can't compile with kernel 2.6.38, the offered patch (in sf) rejected (maybe different source file from the one specified in the patch)Cinerella, can't accept mkv or mp4. (after that I tried to get the source video loaded to Cinerella)x264, transcoding to lower the resolution -> no avi container output, sync problem with raw h264 stream outputavidemux_qt, trying to mux the transcoded video to avi -> crashed with h264 input video, either in elementary stream or matroska format (I doubt Cinerella will accept avi videos with h264 codec, if I could ever make one)ffmpeg, transcode from h264 to xvid -> shared library error: libavutil.so.49 not found xvidenc shell script -> no mencoder (I'm using mplayer2)

I would like to know if there exists an article explaining how update-alternatives integrates with Freedesktop.org MIME. How do these systems coexist? How do they cooperate? Lately KDE and GNOME apps seemed to agree on default applications more and more; it seems there still exists an ordering problem [URL] , section Default application ordering), but things are generally working.
However, now I notice that some applications (which I've known for a long time to not be very Linux desktop friendly, I'm looking at Mozilla first, but this time I can't blame them without reason) use some totally different system, Alternatives. The example that comes to mind now is Icedove. Is there going to be a consensus on the default system or we'le have different applications using different systems?

I am elevating this thread up a level from [url] . Ubuntu 9.10 no longer streams without the screen pausing and going black every 2 minutes! Our product was just going into production and now we need to hopefully find a version of Ubuntu that streams video! We couldn't go with Unbuntu 10.04 because the video streaming was 30% slower than 9.10.

You may all know about Total Video Converter, Any Video Converter and such used in Windows, where you chose codecs, like i want to convert to mp4 for my phone.
But.. there's one specific thing I'm looking for that most don't seem to have. Cutting.
I need for example, to cut from 24:00 to 30:00, that is the only part i want cut and converted to mp4 ready for my phone.

I have been trying to get Cinelerra, but keep getting errors like bash and stuff like that. Is there a good substitute video editor that is on par with Cinelerra? I had it before and like it, and would like something that is as straight forward to use as that.

I love foobar 2000 but I'm always trying to shy away from windows apps. What are your recommendations as "good" replacements for foobar 2000? So far I have tried:
Amarok - Crashes all the time, and keeps saying it can't play mp3s. Used to love this app, but seems broken for me now. Even if I reinstall it.
Rhythmbox - Great, but reports the wrong bitrate on all my songs. It is very important for me to know the correct bitrate for uploading to certain sites.
Audacious - Way to simple and winamp like.
Bangarang - No.

I am missing in my natty some good tool to operate on id3 tags of my mp3. - Could you recommend one that you are/were using ? I don't use Rhythmbox or Banshee and need other, an "external" tool. Alternatively, it could be plugin for Audacious (v2.5) but it needs to have at least elements of batch processing as I have large and messy and hairy and greasy music collection to be sorted out
