Apr 4, 2010I'm using ubuntu 9.10 and I'm trying to crack my own password with John the Ripper. I've been reading and working at this for a long time and I've not been able to crack my password. I've added a "test" account on my machine with the password "password": For my Unix Password:

Nov 2, 2010I am relatively new to Ubuntu and may have a security breech. I was recently looking over synaptics installed packages on my PC and noticed JOHN installed on my system. This was never installed by me nor do I think this entire APP is a dependency of something that may have been installed.My questions are... Has my system been compromised? I use an elaborate password as well as UFW.Can I determine who installed this package (i.e. local user account or remote user)?Can I determine when? The system was installed only 3 days ago.Can I determine if there have been any instances of a successful or failed remote connection to my PC?

Feb 19, 2010In my Open-Suse server I have a script, where makepasswd output(by default it generates similar passwords: cGyTbqpr, tpJ1LA, 33EXdo) is redirected to mkpasswd(which uses DES by default) in order to generate salted hash of this previously generated password. I would like to test the strength of this system. I have a quad core CPU, and if I start John The Ripper like this(I want to use -incremental:all flag):
john -incremental:all passwd
..only one core is utilized at 100%. Is there a possibility to make all four cores to crack this password? Or is this possible only after reprogramming John The Ripper? Or what is the algorithm for generating passwords with with -incremental:all flag? I mean if John generates passwords randomly in brute-force mode, then it's smart to start four different John processes simultaneously because then one of those four will find the password firs
General :: Sendmail - /var/mail/john: Permission Denied
Aug 26, 2011I ran a simple command "mail" on my Suse Linux 11.1 box and it's display "/var/mail/john: Permission denied" I had two users, john and peter When I login as peter and ran "mail" it display the same error when I login as john

I'm using postfix as my MTA. Here's the output from the command ls -l /var/mail
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2011-08-06 11:54 /var/mail -> spool/mail
Here's the out output when I run echo $MAIL
/var/mail/john
I login with different user and run echo $MAIL it output the same line /var/mail/john

Handbrake only finds some of the dvd titles
OGM rip gives an "Unknown error"

Dec 2, 2008The subject of this post is actually a question e.g. is there a mp3 ripper that allows the bitrate to be modified. I have looked at cdparanioa, which I believe is the foundation of most of the Linux rippers, but it does not allow modification of the bitrate. I realise I could ripper in flacc format but I have an mp3 player as does my grandaughter so I need the mp3 format. Incidentally is there a player(portable) that will play flacc encoded files?

Nov 10, 2010All I'd like to reliably do is rip a few audio CDs. SoundKonverter - doesn't work at all. Log tells me nothing SoundJuicer - OK for one disk. Usually crashes when the read disk is ejected and attempts are made to read the next. Failing that, it will read a few tracks and then lock up. K3B - Only rips first disk, then the progress window (form) locks up at 100%. Cancel button doesn't work. Need to kill task.
RipOff - works OK, but so slow... life's too short goobox - locks up before it even reads the disk and despite its claims I don't think it's a "rip" tool anyway.

I suspect that the sluggishness is due to disk activity since the CPU usage is consistently under 50% on each of the 4 cores of the CPU, and over 30% of the 6GB of RAM are free.
Is there a tool that can show me in real time the number of disk IO operations per second and the amount of data read/written per second? Can all this info be broken down and displayed per process?

Nov 4, 2009I'm using my Linux (SLES 10) server as a File Server at this point. I need to set File Permissions to nested folders differently to different groups. For example:

I've been using Webmin and Putty to set permissions but Putty only allows me the Default Group, it won't allow me to set several groups on the same directory. Webmin seems to allow me to add multiple groups (Webmin --> Others --> File Manager --> Info & ACL tab will provide extended abilities) but when I add multiple groups, they don't seem to take effect? I'm wondering if my setup at the 'Share' level or at the hierarchy of my folder structure (unix based) needs to be set specifically?

This made me wonder how people actually can charge for software derived from Linux, for instance, Red Hat. Well, my impression is that they really make profit only out of services. Somebody probably bought the program from RHE and can make it available at no cost.

Mainly asking what kind of user you consider the distro to be for (beginners, advanced, total newb, whatever), and whether you think they offer as much to an extremely experienced user as they would to a newb.Those are my two favorite distros, and I really like Mandriva a lot. I'm trying to pick one to stick with throughout, but I'm not really sure if Mandriva is too automated and Windows-user oriented like Ubuntu (I haven't really delved into the deeper aspects of Linux so I have zero experience in this area now). This might sound a little elitist but I don't want to be using Mandriva and just be automatically dismissed as a newb on first impression just because I'm using Mandriva (although admittedly I am a bit of a newb at the moment, I don't plan on staying one).
