Ubuntu Multimedia :: Getting 1920 X 1200 Resolution
Jan 3, 2011
I've only been using it for about 6 hours. I'm impressed by what I've seen so far, but I'm having trouble getting a higher screen resolution.
I have an Acer Aspire 5536 with an ATI Radeon 3200 graphics card. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 with Wubi to dual boot alongside Windows 7. When I go to change the screen resolution, I can not choose a higher one than 1366x768. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me get a resolution of 1920x1200.
Like I said, I'm a Ubuntu newbie (and I don't have much savvy on graphics cards either)
starting again with Linux since I crashed W7 and got tired of it. Running Ubuntu 1104 on Toshiba G30 with two drives. Installed 1104 on SDA
Two problems
1. On computer start-up it freezes, blank display with no action from the HDD
2. On selecting the HDD from the menu by pressing F12 and then HDD1 I get the same problem.
I can overcome this by changing grub to 'noquiet nosplash nomodeset' but then I get of course the full goomph on the screen. Could this be a display driver problem since I noticed that I can not get the full 1920 x 1200 resolution?
I have installed Ubuntu 10.4 on Virtual Box, I have installed it successfully, the only problem is when I check the display settings it only have 2 options : 600 X 400 and 800 X 600 and this makes it difficult to work on Ubuntu as 800 X 600 is half the size of my desktop. How I can increase / configure the display settings so that atleast I can fit ubuntu screen into my screen size.
I did install the addition application, restarted the OS but still I don't see any display resolution 1200 X 800, tried pressing ctrl+D nothing happens, after installing I saw it updated mouse cursor now i don't have to press ctrl key again n again to enter into the ubuntu OS but still struggling with the resolution as it's too small, please guide me (here is the screen shot of my screen after installing the addition app).
Whenever I restart my system, the screen resolution has been reset to 1600 x 1200. I change it in "configure desktop" and it's ok for the session but it changes back on reboot. Also, the font sizes are too small for xterms. Sure, I can ctrl+ to increase but why should I have to do this each time I login? I noticed others seem to be having this problem. Is there an upgrade that will fix this? I'm using 11.2 and kde.
I am getting this error on the screen when the system boots up...
"The current input timing is not supported by the monitor display. change your input timing to 1920x1080@60Hz or any other monitor listed timing as per the monitor specifications"
This monitor is a Dell U2311H, it's default resolution is 1920*1080.
My motherboard is ASUS M4A785T-M with onboard display card ATI HD4200.
The first time I installed the whole desktop system but it can't enter the gdm and the monitor is black and above error message shown. At this moment, I even don't know how to go back to console. I press CTRL+ALT+DEL, nothing happened. So I have to reinstall the system.
So the second time I only install the base system. Then install X and gnome. Then type "startx". It happen again. But fortunately this time, when I press "ESC", I can go back to console.
I also tried ATI's driver, but it was also an error during installing their driver "ati-driver-installer-10-10-x86.x86_64.run".
I also tried modified the "xorg.conf". But still not working.
I have tested this webcam with cheese, and it is able to take pictures and record video. However, the screen is pitchblack when previewing.

The webcam is detected as an usb device, but previewing doesn't work. I want to use this webcam with zoneminder, and zoneminder requires the preview to work.
I'm trying to get an old Roland pen plotter to work on Ubuntu. So far I can't even see it. I'm using a Parallel to usb cable, which from other post may be a problem. I think the plotter works, it turns on and things move about as if getting ready to do a job.

i have been trying for a loooong time to have this scanner work, but to no avail. searching forums did not exclude it from possibly working, but could not find a definitive answer, nor a solution. in the past i tried to have it work under ubuntu, with no luck, and now i'm trying again the exercise with Fedora 14. my kernel is 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.i686.PAE
im am using a dell inspiron 1721 with an ati raedon 1200 series video card i need to know how to update it so that i can get compiz to work properly. (it worked for ubuntu).
I have just taken the plunge and began learning linux. I currently have a compaq laptop which ive partioned to run windows/linux.I have Debian 7.9 installed, and have been able to surf online no problem with my ethernet, but have ran into big problem attempting to get the wifi to operate.
I checked online first to make sure the adapter i bought was compatible, which it is.So far i have done the following.

After checking online, it appears Bus 001 Device 005: ID 2357:0101 is the USB adapter.I then ran lspci
F12 64 bit machine, connects to a Windows share to which a HP PSC 1210 is connected through a USB connection. Printer is set to share, nicknamed "Asterix". When the printer is set up through F12, I select under Network printer "Windows printer via Samba". I browse, find the printer, and click verify. The printer is accessible. Then I finish the installation, ordering a test print. Here the strange things start happening (attached some screenshots to back the story up).
1) No error messages appear that I can find. No cups-errors, no other errors pop up on the F12 machine. The print appears and disappears from the "Document Print Status (Asterix)" window. Only on the Printer Properties page do I see something strange: Printer state: Idle - procession page 2. 2) In the Windows machine, I also can't find any error messages. The print appears in the Printer list, and stays there. The printer comes to life, checks its cartridges, rolls some wheels, and then decides to do nothing more. When I select the print and click on Properties, the default priority is 1, but when I move it up to 99, nothing changes. The only strange thing here is, that the document, according to the Windoze machine, has 0 pages, yet is some 20MB. And nothing ever happens.
Things I think it's not: Firewall issue. The print obviously slips through to the other end. Faulty driver issue. Directly from the Windoze machine, and if plugged into the USB of the F12 machine, does it print perfectly fine.
Is there any possibilities to make Creative HS-1200 wireless headset to work in OS11.1?
It shows up in Mixer panel, but i cant in any way configure it or make it work. It seems its been detected in some way, but i Yast-Sound it doesnt show up. Only in KMix.
I recently installed (dual booting) Ubuntu 10.04 on a Samsung QX411-W01 running Windows 7. It's a system with with two graphics drivers (Intel HD 3000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, 1GB).
Right now when I try to change the monitor settings, Ubuntu doesn't seem to detect my proper capabilities (currently only allowing 1024x768 when Windows 7 is as good as 1366x768. )
I don't really know how to go about fixing this issue. I've tried reading through the forums, but I'm not finding any solutions.
Also I am unable to turn on any form of desktop effects. It seems the issue is with the driver.
I'm having problems adjusting my screen resolution. I'm using Nvidia Geforce FX5300 video card and Samsung T220P LCD screen with resolution of 1920x1200. After installing the Nvidia driver I went to system -> preferences -> display in order to change the resolution to 1920x1200. Unfortunately, the available resolutions were only 640x480 and 320x240. I tried to set the resolution manually, using the advanced button, but when I did this everything was extremely big on my screen.
I just Install Ubuntu for the first time and am having problems setting my hdtv's native resolution of 1280x768. I have tried editing the xorg.conf file with no success. Video card is an Nvidia 8600GT. Also I have a dual boot with Fedora 12 and it runs at 1280X768 with the same xorg.conf file edits i have been tring in Ubuntu. Here is my current xorg.conf file:
The native resolution from my LCD monitor is 1680x1050, but the list of "NVIDIA X Server Settings" only allow me to set it to maximum 1360x768. The monitor is conected via VGA cable and it is recognized as CRT-0. When I run the 'xrandr' command from terminal, it shows:
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1680 x 1050 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 50.0* 800x600 51.0 52.0 53.0
I can't increase my screen resolution to higher than 800x600. In Windows I have a 1024x768 resolution. This is my xorg.conf file
Code:
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file) # # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database.
I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit with a GTS 250. After installing the restricted driver from NVIDIA's website I get stuck at a 640x320 resolution. The only other option I get is 320x240. The resolution I need is 1680x1050.
I have a 30" apple cinema display. The monitor handles up to 2560 x 1600 pixels which is the optimum resolution for this monitor. I found out that most apple monitors have nvidia graphic card. The monitor is hooked up to a motherboard Intel BOXDG45FC. This motherboard has Onboard Video Chipset Intel GMA 4500. However, using KDE interface I dont get beyond 1280x800 resolution for the monitor. How can I get the maximum resolution for the monitor?
I've a Samsung SyncMaster 943, widescreen I also have a GForce 8400 GS This monitor supports (as seen on website) a 1440*900 resolution. I've installed the nvidia driver (from homepage) with version 195.36.24 The NVidia X Server Settings shows only a 1360*768 as max possible resolution. So, I've edited xorg.conf, restarted PC but got no luck... here it is my xorg.conf
I've been having a fit with Ubuntu (even tried updating to the new version). I have a USB camera (1.3mp- 1024x768 ) that I need to observe and capture images with (microphotography). I've downloaded and installed multiple packages, but have not found any way to change the default resolutions for V4l2. The resolution closest to what I need is 1024x816, but the video is torn and unusable. One program, Kamoso, worked fine in 640x480 mode, but as soon as I upgraded to Ubuntu 10, it went to the higher resolution (1024x816) which doesn't work right.
Is there some way to force v4l2 into a 1024x768 mode? The camera is a Tucsen 1.3mp microscope camera. I've emailed the company for more information and to see if they would email me the software/drivers (I lost the driver disk in a fire), but nothing so far from them.
The programs I've installed and tried: Camorama, Kamoso, Xsane, Cheese, VLC media player, v4l2ctrl, v4l2ucp, v4lctl, v4l-info. Camorama doesn't work, Kamoso- you couldn't change resolutions (ditto for Xsane), Cheese - I can change resolutions, but they have these crazy values that don't work, VLC media I cannot change either. I'm supposed to be able to use v4l2ucp to change settings, but I don't get the screen that the preview for the program (in Ubuntu Software) showed.
I'm using Karmic and just recently had to do a fresh install. After installing I immediately ran the update manager and updated everything I was told to update. Upon rebooting, my resolution is stuck at either 800x600 or 640x480. I've been searching around for a while now, and none of the fixes I've looked at have worked with my architecture. Here's my lspci output.
I just switched monitors to a Viewsonic VX2025 and I am unable to get beyond 1280 x 1024 using the nvidia x server settings. My graphics card is a GeForce 5200. These are connected with a DVI plug. I would like to be able to set my resolution to 1920 x 1080. (Also, the card and monitor worked at 1920 x 1080 in a previous windows machine.)
I have done a fair bit of searching and it appears that my issue is either the x configuration file or EDID. After 2 days of working with this it's gotten confusing to say the least. So, I'm looking to see if others have had a similar problem and how to solve it. I have not altered an x config file before, so not exactly sure of where to begin.
