Fedora Hardware :: HP PSC 1200 Series Over Network - Printer State Idle
Dec 4, 2009F12 64 bit machine, connects to a Windows share to which a HP PSC 1210 is connected through a USB connection. Printer is set to share, nicknamed "Asterix". When the printer is set up through F12, I select under Network printer "Windows printer via Samba". I browse, find the printer, and click verify. The printer is accessible. Then I finish the installation, ordering a test print. Here the strange things start happening (attached some screenshots to back the story up).
1) No error messages appear that I can find. No cups-errors, no other errors pop up on the F12 machine. The print appears and disappears from the "Document Print Status (Asterix)" window. Only on the Printer Properties page do I see something strange: Printer state: Idle - procession page 2.
2) In the Windows machine, I also can't find any error messages. The print appears in the Printer list, and stays there. The printer comes to life, checks its cartridges, rolls some wheels, and then decides to do nothing more. When I select the print and click on Properties, the default priority is 1, but when I move it up to 99, nothing changes. The only strange thing here is, that the document, according to the Windoze machine, has 0 pages, yet is some 20MB.
And nothing ever happens.
Things I think it's not:
Firewall issue. The print obviously slips through to the other end.
Faulty driver issue. Directly from the Windoze machine, and if plugged into the USB of the F12 machine, does it print perfectly fine.

Nov 12, 2010I have a problem with the latest Fedora. Installed it cleanly on a machine with Gigabyte H55M-S2 with Intel Core i3. There seems to be no sound and I checked to see if anything is muted but is not. The manual says that the sound chip is ALC888B so this could be the first problem. Any ide how I can make it work? Here is a dump of some things on my system.

May 15, 2011I would like to use VIM to add something to the end of a series of lines. Ideally I could do something like add " X" (with a space before the X) to the end of lines 1-40 and 50-60 in a single command, i.e. ideally I could have a break in between where I didn't add something. If that's not possible just adding to 1-40 and 50-60 separately would work too. I would be using bufdo to do this, but my understanding is that anything you can do in vim you can use with the bufdo command.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Change Display To 1200 X 800
Apr 29, 2010I have installed Ubuntu 10.4 on Virtual Box, i have installed it successfully, the only problem is when i check the display settings it only have 2 options : 600 X 400 and 800 X 600 and this makes it difficult to work on Ubuntu as 800 X 600 is half the size of my desktop.
how i can increase / configure the display settings so that atleast i can fit ubuntu screen into my screen size.

Jan 3, 2011I've only been using it for about 6 hours. I'm impressed by what I've seen so far, but I'm having trouble getting a higher screen resolution.
I have an Acer Aspire 5536 with an ATI Radeon 3200 graphics card. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 with Wubi to dual boot alongside Windows 7. When I go to change the screen resolution, I can not choose a higher one than 1366x768. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me get a resolution of 1920x1200.
Like I said, I'm a Ubuntu newbie (and I don't have much savvy on graphics cards either)

Jul 30, 2011starting again with Linux since I crashed W7 and got tired of it. Running Ubuntu 1104 on Toshiba G30 with two drives. Installed 1104 on SDA
Two problems
1. On computer start-up it freezes, blank display with no action from the HDD
2. On selecting the HDD from the menu by pressing F12 and then HDD1 I get the same problem.
I can overcome this by changing grub to 'noquiet nosplash nomodeset' but then I get of course the full goomph on the screen. Could this be a display driver problem since I noticed that I can not get the full 1920 x 1200 resolution?

OpenSUSE :: Screen Resolution Has Been Reset To 1600 X 1200?
Mar 18, 2010Whenever I restart my system, the screen resolution has been reset to 1600 x 1200. I change it in "configure desktop" and it's ok for the session but it changes back on reboot. Also, the font sizes are too small for xterms. Sure, I can ctrl+ to increase but why should I have to do this each time I login? I noticed others seem to be having this problem. Is there an upgrade that will fix this? I'm using 11.2 and kde.

1. SSH to machineA.
2. SSH from machineA to machineB
where machineB is my actual lab machine. neither machineA or machineB allow anything other than SSH, and machineB is only accessible from machineA. However, I really need to run yum on machineB.I have managed to get internet access via Firefox on machineB by creating a series of SOCKS proxy via SSH.
1. machineB: ssh -L 12345:localhost:12345 user@machineA
2. machineA: ssh -D 12345 user@machineC
3. machineB: configure firefox to use socks proxy, localhost, 12345
where machineC has internet without limits placed. This is the only way I have managed to get internet working. I tried using ssh -L all the way from machineB->machineA->machineC but it didn't work (even when setting Firefox to use http proxy). I tried using ssh -D all the way, but again that doesn't work either. I do have access via Firefox using socks proxy. However, yum update fails to retrieve mirror list, and from what I have found I don't believe yum supports socks proxy directly. Instead, it uses http_proxy / ftp_proxy.how to get yum to go out over the SOCKS proxy I created (same one using in Firefox)? It seems like since Firefox can access the internet and everything without issues, i should be able to get yum to tunnel through the same connection to access everything.... I tried

Debian :: After Upgrade To 3.0 Series Of Glitches?
Aug 17, 2011I am using Debian testing on my ThinkPad T400s laptop for almost two years now. I just have been on short vacation, and when I've got back, I saw pretty comprehensive upgrade of vital parts, like kernel (3.0), gnome (3.0), gdm (3.0). Since I am using true Firefox and Thunderbird, they also went up (6.0).
Anyhow, after aptitude safe-upgrade (with some minor problems), I got everything updated. However, I realize that the whole system is much slower and unstable than before. For example, applications are slower at start, Firefox and Thunderbird crash when you want to save something (like attachment, of pdf-file, or the like). Also, problems with unmounting usb drives [URL]... Does anyone else experience similar problems? What would be the best thing to do, to prevent some serious system failure (I need my system for my work, and I always get nervous when this kind of things happen)?
Fedora :: Connecting To Internet Using N Series In F11?
Nov 3, 2009I have been through a lot of posts and was still unable to connect to the internet using wvdial utility after doing all the changes. I being a newbie to this operating system, didn't know how to get started. After going through a lot of posts, I came across an application that is going to be a part of Fedora 12 called ' blueman '. It is used to connect to the internet using a gprs enabled phone via bluetooth. It integrates itself with Network Manager making it even more easier to use. To install it type the following commands in the terminal:
su
Type in your password and hit enter. Then type
yum install blueman
The application is only 575kb and will install instantly.And after a reboot fedora will show an applet related to that application. Open it and click search to list all available devices and select your phone and then select bond to pair your phone with your computer ( if it isn't already). After bonding right click your phone and select serial ports>dial up service. this will make the gprs/edge/3G connection to appear in network manager and selecting it will connect your computer to the internet.
This was the bluetooth way. If you want to connect through USB, just plug in your phone and select PC Suite mode in your phone. The fedora installation will automatically detect your phone as a modem and the connection will appear in the network manager.
This works on all N series Nokia phones and also most other phones as well.
Fedora :: 11 And Kernel 2.6.30 Series Causes Hangs?
Feb 18, 2010I see there are lots of messages about fedora 12 freezing.Actually I have such a problem with fedora 11 since I updated to kernel 2.6.30. My laptop, all of a sudden, freezes. Everything is freezed: mouse is not working, keyboard not responding (hitting caps lock produces nothing), can't switch to terminals, ctrl+alt+canc don't work. I can just push the power button to shutdown the system. BUT the hard disk activity is still going on. I can see and hear the sleeping daemons that cause some usual disk activity while the rest of the system is completely freezed.My system is a HP DV5-1025el with an AMD Turion ZM-80, Ati Radeon HD3450, 4Gb of RAM and 250gb HDD.I got fedora 11 regularly updated, now has kernel 2.6.30.10-105.2.23.fc11, but it is used to happen also with older 2.6.30 kernels, NEVER happened with 2.6.29 kernels. Video driver isn't the cause, since it happens with both proprietary fglrx and OSS radeon drivers.
