Debian Multimedia :: ATI HD4200 Can't Work On 1920*1080 Widescreen?
Nov 4, 2010
I am getting this error on the screen when the system boots up...
"The current input timing is not supported by the monitor display. change your input timing to 1920x1080@60Hz or any other monitor listed timing as per the monitor specifications"
This monitor is a Dell U2311H, it's default resolution is 1920*1080.
My motherboard is ASUS M4A785T-M with onboard display card ATI HD4200.
The first time I installed the whole desktop system but it can't enter the gdm and the monitor is black and above error message shown. At this moment, I even don't know how to go back to console. I press CTRL+ALT+DEL, nothing happened. So I have to reinstall the system.
So the second time I only install the base system. Then install X and gnome. Then type "startx". It happen again. But fortunately this time, when I press "ESC", I can go back to console.
I also tried ATI's driver, but it was also an error during installing their driver "ati-driver-installer-10-10-x86.x86_64.run".
I also tried modified the "xorg.conf". But still not working.

I have an LG monitor that displays at 1920 x 1080 in vista, but it can only go up to 1440 x 900 in opensuse 11.2.
I already searched for LG's website but could not find a suitable linux driver for it yet.
Is there a way to reach the 1920 x 1080 resolution in opensuse?

I've only been using it for about 6 hours. I'm impressed by what I've seen so far, but I'm having trouble getting a higher screen resolution.
I have an Acer Aspire 5536 with an ATI Radeon 3200 graphics card. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 with Wubi to dual boot alongside Windows 7. When I go to change the screen resolution, I can not choose a higher one than 1366x768. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me get a resolution of 1920x1200.
Like I said, I'm a Ubuntu newbie (and I don't have much savvy on graphics cards either)

I'm running windows 7 in a Vb and want the resolution to be that of my monitor, 1920x1080. However the only options i get are 1920x 1024 or 1600x1200. Does anyone know if there is a way within windows, or ubuntu, to have it be 1080p?

all HD video lags. Slightly, but constantly. You can watch movies, but it's annoying.
My PC - intel i3, integrated 4500 vga and 4GB RAM, Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. CPU usage is around 30-70% and disk load is low.
Typical performance tweaks like "skip loops - all" and read buffer size doesn't affect current condition. In Ubuntu 10.10 everything worked flawlessly.
PS. whether 4500 gpu acceleration should work in Ubuntu 11.04 by default? I can't set it up...

I have lots of 720p MKV files which play fine on VLC and/or mplayer. These are the two players I know. Whenever I try to play a 1080p file, the video is sluggish and quickly desynchronizes from the audio (mplayer) or the sound is choppy (vlc). This is because one CPU cannot decode a 1080p x264 video. Not powerful enough. Now, I have a Q6600, with 4 cores. Options in mplayer and VLC to use more than one decoding thread don't seem to do anything at this date, as one core is only user (reported by TOP).

I have a bunch of old machines that a Client has asked us to convert into Citrix terminals. We installed Ubuntu 10 and Citrix Receiver on them, but about 5 of them are connected to new widescreen LCD's and they boot into console mode (older monitors are fine). If we unplug the cable during the boot process and then plug it in, the monitor works fine. It's only when it's auto-detected during boot that it will not load the GUI. I believe it's an old TNT64 chipset.

I got a Geforce 8400GS 512MB with a 2.8 Ghz quad core system on Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. MTS videos from my camcorder, which are AVCHD 28 mbit encoded don't play back smoothly using the nvidia proprietary driver (195.36.24). I compared with Windows XP, and concluded that it must be my not terribly high powered graphics card (silent, w/o fan) that must be too weak - the rest of the system is really quite fast. The software isn't really the issue either, I don't think, especially since the latest VLC under Windows XP doesn't do it, either.
Do people have experience what kind of a graphics can can power such video to play back smoothly? I am considering a 1 GB Asus Geforce GT520 with 1GB DDR3 (the 8400 has DDR2) - since it is also silent and I have a compact HTPC (a Shuttle), so shouldn't run too hot and I don't like loud fan noise.
I'm not sure if it is the larger and faster graphics RAM, or a fast graphics CPU (GT520 has 810 Ghz versus 8400GS has 500 Mhz) that will make the difference...

I'm currently experiencing some problems when plugging my linux box into a Widescreen monitor / HDTV (using the VGA slot). The problem is that it the driver only seems to support 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions on this Full HD TV / Monitor; however, when plugged into a standard monitor the 'xrandr -q' command shows a vast array of resolutions from 640x480 upto 1280x1024.
This is a pretty skinny install of Debian Lenny using just LXDE desktop and hardly anything else.
Can Linux support widescreen / HD resolutions and if so, how do I configure this install to work with my spanking HDTV using the VGA port?

Ive installed Lucid in my vaio. The vga is 4350 ATi.
The videos and games have two black stripes at the monitors edges this is due to Widescreen monitor.
At windows you can go at catalyst control center and in monitor configuration has the option for scaling so i can configured my vga to play the videos and the games at full screen with out any black gaps (right-left)

Just bought this monitor and it doesnt have widescreen support like my old Dell one but the crystal display in it is leaking across the screen. Maybe its just too new or something. I have little experience in configuring Xorg.conf although I'm pretty adept in other areas of Linux. Running ubuntu 11.04 gnome not unity or gnome-shell. The resolution is 1920x1080 (16:9), 60 Hz. with the default recommended nvidia driver. Maybe ran into the same situation or knows how to configure X.

starting again with Linux since I crashed W7 and got tired of it. Running Ubuntu 1104 on Toshiba G30 with two drives. Installed 1104 on SDA
Two problems
1. On computer start-up it freezes, blank display with no action from the HDD
2. On selecting the HDD from the menu by pressing F12 and then HDD1 I get the same problem.
I can overcome this by changing grub to 'noquiet nosplash nomodeset' but then I get of course the full goomph on the screen. Could this be a display driver problem since I noticed that I can not get the full 1920 x 1200 resolution?

I want to run a proxy server on port 1080, so I typed
Code:
ssh localhost -D 1080
That way I am able to connect to port 1080 from that server, but I can't connect to port 1080 from another client on the LAN.
What can I do so that other clients can connect to port 1080 on my server?

I'm having some trouble getting ALSA working on my system. I had been using OSS for awhile but decided to move to ALSA after a kernel upgrade. ALSA worked fine except for the tedious chore of having to run alsaconf everytime I booted up. I was getting errors message for OSS during boot up telling me OSS modules weren't loading properly and linux-headers needed to be installed to get it to work properly again. I ended up installing the linux-headers later due to some nvidia driver fiddling. My system has now reverted back to OSS and I can't seem to get ALSA to work at all. I have libasound2, alsa-base, alsa-utils and alsa-oss installed and alsaconf says no ALSA modules are loaded. I've been searching around and haven't found how to get rid of OSS to install ALSA properly.
Distro: Debian Lenny
Kernel: 2.6.26-2-686
Sound Card: Creative Labs SB Audigy
OSSv4.1
ALSAv-current packages according to synaptic

A client of mine brought a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop with Debian Lenny + KDE3.5 installed. The problem is that USB mouse won't work, no matter which USB port is used. If I move the mouse, after 5-6 seconds, the arrow moves a bit and that's all. We have tried 3 different mice; one is mine which works flawlessly on my Linux installation (btw: the laptop has its OS installed by me)USB keyboard works with no issues.I have tried the following but with no results:
1. upgraded BIOS
2. recompiled kernel
3. commented the "blacklist usbmouse" in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist so it could load the old driver
4. as last resolt I also disabled USB legacy support in BIOS
PS: The OS will not be upgraded to Squeeze because she is not staying in the country and later support for unpleasant suprises is not possible.

I'm trying out a Jessie install and have noticed VNC doesn't work as well as it used to. I often install a desktop environment on a headless machine, disable *dm, and use vnc4server to create a desktop session if I want to use a GUI. When I try to do the same on Jessie, I run into problems.
Using Gnome, all I get is the generic "Oops something went wrong" error. Looking at .xsession-errors, there are some errors that hint at the problem.
Code: Select allXsession: X session started for ryan at Mon Dec 29 06:07:30 CST 2014
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 109 (X_ChangeHosts)
Value in failed request: 0x5
Serial number of failed request: 6
Current serial number in output stream: 8

The same thing seems to happen with Cinnamon. Since I doubt a fix for the above issue will make it into Jessie, I tried XFCE. However, that doesn't work correctly either. When running XFCE via VNC something is misreporting the version of xrandr as 1.1 instead of 1.4. Since xfsettingsd appears to want version 1.2+, many things are broken.
This post on the Ubuntu forums suggests the issue might be fixed in xfsettingsd version 4.11: [URL] .....
Is there a better way of getting a remote desktop in Jessie that I'm overlooking?

I have a generic saa7134 PCI TV Tuner branded as Encore without a radio. Recently I got it working on xawtv (with a pcm error delayed sound and TVTime (no sound? unless executed a record <parameters>. Now, i want to use that TV Tuner in GNU Radio GQRX-SDR to listen or receive NOAA APT transmission, but the problem is I don't know how to get it done. I tried to research but nothing came up with my configuration. I dont have any other USB SDR so Im just using the PCI TV Tuner. Any other ways to resolve the delayed sound in xawtv/arecord? Im using the saa7134-alsa. Any other software to manually set the frequency of the TV Tuner in the NOAA freq 137.xMHz so I can just record it using any application.
Additional info:
I am using Debian GNU/Linux 8.2 Jessie i386 CPU Intel

I've installed squeeze (kernel 2.6.32-3-686 now) on an old Amilo M-6100 laptop with a Silicon Motion graphic chip. I've installed Slim and LXDE but Xorg won't start properly. Apparently it doesn't recognize the screen and tries to apply a wrong resolution, no matter what I do. Also, if I try Xorg -configure, I get stuck with a black screen .
I tried to copy-paste data from a xorg.conf file from there: [URL], to no avail.
If you'd care to look at my log file: [URL]
