I just did a clean install from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to Ubuntu 9.10. I went to System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers to enable any drivers (mainly for my graphics card so I could run higher resolutions). Had two driver, one for my wireless network interface card and one for my graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200). I enabled the drivers restarted and went to System -> Administration -> NVIDIA X Server Settings. The resolution was set to "Auto", which is 1280 x 1024 (max.) on my old CRT.
I've ran that resolution for a day now and it isn't as snappy as I'd like it to be (or as the exact same resolution was on 8.04). So I reverted back to 1024 x 768. Everything seems to be running as I'd hope under the lower resolution. The only problem I am running into now is when I restart NVIDIA X Server Settings changes back to "Auto" and automatically switches to 1280 x 1024. I've clicked "Save X Configuration File" thinking that might help retain the resolution I want after startup, but it just says "Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/x11/xorg.confg'!"
How do I get my resolution to stay at 1024 x 768 after a restart?
I was wondering why my max resolution on my 22" LG Flatron M2262D screen is 1024 x 768? Just recently wiped off Windows and installed Ubuntu fully. - (Funny thing is, I didn't mean to. I deleted the partition by accident). Anyway, before I could get a bigger resolution on Windows with this screen? Only reason I'm using it is because my laptop screen is broke with a 'ink spill' screen. Could it be drivers need installing? If so, where could I download them from?

View 9 Replies View RelatedOpenSUSE 11.4 (x86) + KDE 4.6.0 starts up by default in the 1280x1024 screen resolution. Although this is very annoying it can be overcome. But when I change to 1024x768 resolution the Taskbar doesn't adapt to this and the icons bottom right in the system tray can not be seen anymore (they disappear beyond the right side of the monitor so to say).
I have installed the nvidia-gfx-kmp-default graphics driver for my old GeForce card. This problem also occurs with the default, but rubbish, Nouveau driver. In OpenSUSE 11.3 there was no problem at all with the same configuration.
I got myself a brand new pc, it has an asrock z68 pro3 motherboard and an i2500k proc. the screen is a dell u2311h the problem is i cannot get the resolution higher then 1280*1024. with 10.10 the monitor works perfectly, but the system crashes. so i want to use 10.04, which seems quite stable on my hardware.

View 4 Replies View RelatedOn my desktop with Squeeze the resolution is all different when I booted up this morning. It used to be something like 1680 x 1050 and now the highest available under system > preferences > monitors is 1360 x 768. I don't believe I have had any xorg.conf file on here since installation. There were a fair number of updates yesterday but I can't figure out what the source of this might be. My system is multiboot, though nothing but Squeeze has been booted for months.
I checked a different old linux distribution and it had the same problem but with even lower resolution. It shares the same home partition which has Gnome settings on it. Then I checked the w vista boot and even it had a similar problem of low resolution, though I was able to fix it by hand, selecting the higher resolution. So I can't figure out if the source of this problem is hardware, software, or what. I've checked all the connections and they seem tight.
The last update for 10.04 has really screwed my desktop. Several of the icons are off the bottom of the screen. All icons are too large. Can't adjust the screen resolution. Panel at the bottom when placed in autohide is so sensitive that it is almost impossible to use. Jumps up and down like a flea on a hot stove. I have reduced the sensitivity of the mouse to the minimum with no effect. There is no excuse for so many troublesome updates. The problem with using an external monitor with a laptop has never been resolved by Ubuntu.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe monitor is a dell 2009 w (16:10 with around 1680x1050 IIRC) I have a fujitsu desktop with the intel core i5 CPU. the crux is the i5 has an integrated GPU. hwinfo says 'clarkdale integrated graphics controller' and yast tells me the same too, knowing the monitor model as well (with correct resolution) So we have an intel GPU ... but the resolution of the kde desktop is always the 1024x768. sax2 do not accept any other resolutions - he knows only threee, one larger at 1280x1024. But even if i try to turn it on he falls back to 1024x768. this is independed from runlevel 3 or 5. the /etx/X11/xorg.conf knows the monitor and the two modes 1024 and 1680 - but everyhwere else it seems that it is unknown, using default vesa mode... the gfx tools seem to ignore the ability of the higher resolution.

I have recently been trying to install ubuntu 11.04 on my old computer and I installed ubuntu with no problems but everytime it takes me to grub, the monitor will turn black in 2-3 mins with a message saying Not Optimum mode 12080 x 1024. When I open the card (using a card reader) in Nautilus (Ubuntu 10.04) it will only list about 1024 files and not the rest. It does not provide any warnings so one could easily think all files have been copied when in fact they haven't. This could be a real issue if the user does not notice. Using another app called rapid photo downloader in Ubuntu does not seem to list/preview all the files either. I dual boot to win xp 32 bit and I can see all the photos and can copy them to the harddrive without any issues so I don't think it is hardware related. How to get Nautilus to allow the copy of all files?

I've tried increasing this limit but still can't pass 1024. Does "more /proc/sys/fs/file-nr" gives me the global count of used file descriptors? Why do I see a maximum of 1024 open file descriptors in /proc/sys/fs/file-nr if this is the global count for the machine and each user should have at least 1024 allowed file descriptors by default? Is there a way to increase the limit while the server is running?

I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

But then again, it doesn't calculate the actual file size, but rather a size aligned to 1024 bytes just as Windows does that with 4096 bytes cluster size. Is there a way to calculate the actual file size? eg. 1021 bytes
I upgraded to 11.04 about 10 days ago. I have this intermittently weird problem where some of the applications, some of the time, are oversized for the 1024 x 600 display. I can't get to the buttons on the bottom end of the screen, and the window refuses to decrease in size enough so that it all fits on. So far, I've had this problem with Evolution, Pytrainer, Gimp, and another one that escapes my memory.
Has anyone else had this issue? (Except for the Evolution bug, which has been around since 2005 or thereabouts. How on earth is that thing still the default when nobody bothers to fix it up?) how to a workaround? Heck, I don't even know where to go to report this kind of bug.
