Ubuntu Multimedia :: Videos Not Fluid With Compiz?
Jul 26, 2010I've got a problem using compiz on Ubuntu 10.04 64bits with nvidia proprietary driver (195).
When I enable compiz, viewing videos is not fluid, there are jerks on video, and not append if I disable compiz. Is anyone got the same problem ?

Jan 25, 2011Ever since I upgraded my video driver (the proprietary NVIDIA drivers) to 270.18, I have been experiencing lag when typing and when using Compiz as my WM. I can work around both problems by switching the WM to Metacity, but obviously I don't want to continue using that. I have tried changing my Compiz settings but to little avail. If you want my OS and graphics card, the OS is Ubuntu 10.10 and the graphics card is a NVIDIA GT 330M.

Apr 29, 2011Using either MPlayer or mplayer2 under the video player SMplayer, when clicking on any drop-down menus, the video will freeze and then skip. Once the drop-down menu animation has completed, the video playback will play normally. This happens when using VDPAU to play back H.264 MKV files. Audio playback of the video is never interrupted. why VDPAU will not play nice with SMplayer & Compiz?

Now I want to install Compiz using this guide: http://wiki.debian.org/Compiz but it says I need to edit xorg.conf file, which doesn't exist for me. I'm trying to install Compiz for hours, so I think there is no other option for me than posting this problem.

Apr 10, 2010Two of the most impressive bits of software I have found yet but... Since I installed compiz, VLC is showing an invisible area where the video should be. It does this with all formats and remains this way even if I switch back to Metacity from Compiz. Basically I can see the frame and decoration for the window but no contents. When I maximise I just get black. Other video apps work fine but I'd like to get my beloved VLC working again if possible. Of course Compiz installation could be unrelated and a red herring.

Nov 15, 2010I'm using currently ubuntu 10.10. Having a nvidia gt220 with the proprietary drivers. I used compiz for a while. It works quite well, with vsync on and so on. But one thing bothers me all the time: In any opengl program (like a game or the unigen benchmarks) or on video playback (no matter if its the default video player, xbmc or what ever) I see some kind of stutter. About every second or so it jumps one frame forward and then two back. Till the next second it plays fluid.
To be able to observe this easily you need a video (or a opengl scene) where the whole screen scrolls in a medium speed but smooth. Than you can observ how it "jumps" every second. If the scrolling is too slow you wont observe it. Now, if I turn composite off this disapears. All play fluid. Ofcourse I get tearing as long as I do not also disable the composite extension in the xorg.conf, but this is another story. Is there a possibility to fix this stuttering with compiz active? Cause I use this pc to watch movies quite often so this would render compiz unusable.

Feb 9, 2011i have ubuntu studio 10.04 installed and this is my second installation of the system. now that i have updated the system, got the fglrx drivers for my ATI HD5750, installed compiz-config-settings and glx-dock (aka cairo-dock). the first time i started the glx-dock, half of the dock was visible and it was distorted all over. so i ran compiz-config-settings for the first time and saw that it wasn't also working. then i tried to find a solution for a few valuable hours because it was essential to customize the feel of an OS but i think i have came to a point that i should stop trying to learn things that i see for the first time but ask and hope for the best (soon). anyway i should say that compiz and cairo dock was working the first time i installed the system. now when i run compiz-check, it gives the following output:

Jul 7, 2011Been using Maverick on my Dell Studio XPS for many months without issue. About a week or two ago, compiz has been acting funny and using a lot of cpu time, making everything "choppy," especially after resuming from suspend. I've googled and searched the forum, but all the related posts seem to be several years old.I tried selecting the previous kernel but it didn't help. Was there a bad update to compiz or ati graphics?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Nvidia - Driver Is Activated But Not Currently In Use (compiz Fails)
Aug 25, 2011I have a geforce 8400GS and nvidia-current installed. However, the Additional Drivers app advises that "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system" and that the driver is activated but not in use. I know other people have complained about this problem, but for me this is breaking 3D content and I can't get compiz to work either. When I try to start compiz manually (compiz --replace), I get this error:

In addition to the compiz problem (which I can get over), sometimes I can see the desktop background through the active window. It's hard to explain so I'll take a screenshot when it happens again. Things I've tried:
1. Installing nvidia's latest drivers - The installer was extremely picky, constantly complaining about other modules and drivers. After I finally managed to remove everything it didn't like and install it, X wouldn't load.
2. Reinstall nvidia-current - tried multiple times with no change.
3. Link /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so to /usr/lib/nvidia-current/xorg/libglx.so.270.41.06 - didn't make a difference.

Jun 25, 2011I enabled Antialiasing in nvidia-settings and added "nvidia-settings -l" in a file /etc/X11/Xsession.d/, i knew it worked because sync to vblank works with glxgears and stuff. I enabled 4x antialiasing, allow flipping and texture sharpening in nvidia settings, i also enabled all instances of sync to vblank in nvidia-settings i disabled dynamic twinview i also enabled sync to vblank in ccsm and manually set the refresh rate to 60hz the cube is smoother now, but when i move windows around, i get slight tearing at the edges, when i disable AA and restart compiz, the tearing goes away. There is no tearing when i move windows vertically: It only happens when i move horizontally:

Feb 6, 2011After a few tries, I managed to install Ubuntu on my 3rd generation Macbook Pro (MacbookPro3,1). I installed the proprietary drivers for the Nvidia graphics card and got all the other features working with the information from this page. However, I am having various problems getting the screens working as I would like. When my laptop is at my desk, it is connected to an external 24-inch monitor via DVI, however I regularly disconnect this screen when I go to uni etc.
Ideally I would like Ubuntu to do the following (all of which I can do in Windows and Mac, or the equivalent thereof): Auto-detect when the external monitor is plugged in, set that monitor as the primary screen (with gnome panel etc). And auto-detect when it is unplugged and set the laptop screen as primary.
Support moving windows between both screens Compiz on both screens Separate colour calibration on each screen So far, I have only been able to get a subset of these working at once. I got 2 working alone, without any compiz and the colour calibration only worked on the laptop screen. I got 3 and 4 working without being able to move windows between screens. I have not been able to get 1 working at all - when I disconnect the monitor, I have to tell the nvidia control panel it is gone.
Is there any way to get all four of these things working? I would be willing to sacrifice 3 if 1, 2, and 4 were all working. (I posted this thread to Apple users as well, but I figure there will be more activity here).

May 28, 2011I use an online screencasting java applet called screencast-o-matic to record my screen. While recording, I use Compiz's annotation tool. Normally this tool works great, but for some reason while I'm recording, it gets very laggy (drawing is way behind the mouse movements) and less smooth. For example, drawing a circle at a quicker pace not only causes lag, but also makes the circle look more like a polygon with straight lines. While this is happening, my CPU also spikes, with large strains showing up on the java process. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 with an intel i7 processor. Any ideas as to why annotation lags badly while screencasting, and any ways to fix it.
