Ubuntu Multimedia :: Slight Stuttering In OpenGL Program If Using Compiz
Nov 15, 2010
I'm using currently ubuntu 10.10. Having a nvidia gt220 with the proprietary drivers. I used compiz for a while. It works quite well, with vsync on and so on. But one thing bothers me all the time: In any opengl program (like a game or the unigen benchmarks) or on video playback (no matter if its the default video player, xbmc or what ever) I see some kind of stutter. About every second or so it jumps one frame forward and then two back. Till the next second it plays fluid.
To be able to observe this easily you need a video (or a opengl scene) where the whole screen scrolls in a medium speed but smooth. Than you can observ how it "jumps" every second. If the scrolling is too slow you wont observe it. Now, if I turn composite off this disapears. All play fluid. Ofcourse I get tearing as long as I do not also disable the composite extension in the xorg.conf, but this is another story. Is there a possibility to fix this stuttering with compiz active? Cause I use this pc to watch movies quite often so this would render compiz unusable.

Code:
Failed to activate desktop effects using the given options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.
Check your X configuaration.
You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the composting type. I cannot use OpenGL, hence my Compiz is useless.. I have ATI 5850s

The first issue is that none of the screensavers that come with ubuntu that have GL in the name work on my system. They just show a black screen.Of the 13 that came when i first installed the only ones that work are cosmos, fibrelamp, floating feet, floating ubuntu and fuzzyflakes. All the others show nothing at all. Fair enough I thought,I can live with that so downloaded a few games and things. All worked til I tried my first 3d game(oolite). On starting this I am just faced with a black screen and nothing happens. I think that the 2 issues may be related and that its likely to be a open GL issue. I have installed latest AMD drivers and my card(4350) seems to work fine. Edit: Just tried to use visualisations while using Rhythmbox and these dont work either.They show up on screen but cause my system to freeze,so I am sure I have a graphics problem

I blew my UI (Unity) and dont know how to get it back. I wanted to set my Desktop cube using Compiz and selected OpenGL, but this blew my whole UI away and I cannot control anything anymore. From the empty screen I opened the application console using crtl + F2 There, a Login shows up but I do not know how to login (yeah LOLing here too). Username and my Password didnt make it. I could also not setup any new root password there. What data is needed here? Root, Username? Ubuntu 11.04 ubuntu ubuntu Login:

all HD video lags. Slightly, but constantly. You can watch movies, but it's annoying.
My PC - intel i3, integrated 4500 vga and 4GB RAM, Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. CPU usage is around 30-70% and disk load is low.
Typical performance tweaks like "skip loops - all" and read buffer size doesn't affect current condition. In Ubuntu 10.10 everything worked flawlessly.
PS. whether 4500 gpu acceleration should work in Ubuntu 11.04 by default? I can't set it up...

I'm seeing regular stuttering in PAL video when running at the default 1920x1080 50Hz but not apparent when I use nvidia-settings to switch output to 60Hz. It's most noticeable when the video pans and you can see the video stutter ever half second or so.

I am trying to write a program that accepts user input from the keyboard and a joystick and then sends out the data using the rs232 port of my system to other hardware. I need to send out about 10 bytes every 20 milliseconds. The thing is I need to also keep on reading data from the same port and display it on an opengl screen. This visualizes the hardware data coming in.
So the way I did it was by spinning everything around opengl..I setup GLUT - as follows :
/* register call back functions */
glutDisplayFunc(redraw);
glutReshapeFunc(resize);
glutIdleFunc(visualize);
glutKeyboardFunc(getkey);
glutSpecialFunc(getspecialkey);
And in the idle function visualize(). I currently do the joystick reading and rs232 packet sending and recv stuff. I also call redraw after I am done so if I have received new data above, then it gets drawn on the screen. Everything works fine except that calling redraw() from visualize() is logical in a PC simulation where the simulation state needs to be rendered on screen after a simulation step. But in my case it takes up too much time, much greater than 20 ms. So I can no longer guarantee I can send out packets through the rs232 port every 20 ms. What are my options here if I want to send out packets and visualize data at a reasonable frame rate - packets within 20 ms is more imp of course.

VLC says: "main input error: ES_OUT_SET_(GROUP_)PCR is called too late" when I am playing back most Bluray discs I have tried.
See this bug post for what I am talking about: [URL].... It has to do with playing back h264 video with ALSA.
Possible fixes:
1. Obtain VLC 2.2.2 - see below
2. Fix by Modax here: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/10422 - not currently using dmix and not sure how this will relate to HDMI sound
3. Use Pulseaudio - this does not work for me to get HDMI sound and I do not use Pulseaudio as a rule
I have just tried to compile VLC 2.2.2 and the configure script finished properly but early in the build it fails.
With make the error is:
Code: Select alljason@MEDIA:~/vlc-2.2.2$ make -j4
make all-recursive
make[1]: Entering directory '/home/jason/vlc-2.2.2'
Making all in compat
make[2]: Entering directory '/home/jason/vlc-2.2.2/compat'
GEN dummy.c
make all-am
[Code] ....
And with compile the error is:
Code: Select allMAKE : compat
MAKE : doc
MAKE : po
MAKE : share

I have tried installing 3 different versions of libua-dev, 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3. What could be the problem?
With the bugged audio drivers I'm going to replace the computer but it would still be nice to be able to know the solution to compiling VLC 2.2.2.

In Karmic's Amarok 2.2, when you pause and then play, the sound usually stutters a few times before it starts playing smoothly. I originally thought this was a pulseaudio issue, as stuttering problems have been reported with pulse, but that wouldn't explain why sound is fine in mplayer, audacious, vlc, dragon player, and virtualbox. Only amarok has this problem. I found the cause of the problem: phonon-backend-xine. These steps will get rid of the stuttering problem:
1. Install phonon-backend-mplayer. You can get it from Rog131's PPA: [URL]
2. In Multimedia and Sound Configuration, which you can reach through amarok's Playback settings, on the Backend tab, click the arrows to move mplayer up above xine.
3. Quit and restart amarok.
There are some tradeoffs for good sound. Amarok seems to have some bugs when the sound backend is not xine, and bookmarks and OSD are broken when this backend is playing the sound. When you quit Amarok, it can't bookmark your place so it doesn't restart from where you last were, and after the track changes once, the OSD when you hover over the tray icon only says "Amarok - No track playing." You have to open Amarok to find that info. Are there any settings I can access for phonon-backend-xine that could fix the stuttering issue? The problems with the mplayer backend are minor compared with xine's bad sound, but I would like nice sound, OSD, and bookmarking.

i recently did a clean install of 10.10 to an old box i had so i could mess around with it and learn. however, all audio (and videos too) would stutter and play very quickly (a 1 minute videos video would play in about 45 seconds). so i followed the solution found here: [url]
this fixed the playback problems perfectly, however, i lost the volume control applet in the upper-right of the screen. reinstalling to volume control and then adding the "indicator applet" back to the panel adds a non-functional volume control icon and an additional mail icon.

I've just made the move to openSUSE* and after the installer seemed to bork my xorg.conf because of my Wacom tablet things have been going quite smoothly. My only problem at the moment is that MP3 playback through Exaile, Banshee or Totem stutters and pauses several times per track or more. The only commonality I can see is GStreamer, but nothing is giving me errors to the console.
Code:
rpm --query --queryformat '%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}-%{ARCH} -> %{VENDOR}
' gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3 gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mpegdemux gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mpegmux gstreamer-0_10-plugins-bad gstreamer-0_10-plugins-base gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good-extra gstreamer-0_10-plugins-ugly
[Code].....
* I ditched Fedora to get better Monodevelop support after using Redhat 7.3 and 9 followed by FC 3 and 6 then Fedora 7, 8, 9 and 10. The Ubuntu forums seemed to keep giving me occasional answers to questions, but the Suse build service gave me the RPMs, when the requirements matched.

I have some videos on my harddrive. In most of them the sound just stutters for a short while and then they work fine. But others the stuttering seems to go on. I must admit I didn't have the guts to check the whole videos...Its kind of torture to watch a full length music video with stuttering sound... Man...I'm asking so many questions here I'm starting to get ashamed of myself

I just upgraded from FC8 (32-bit) to FC11 (64-bit). In doing so, I backed up my entire World of Warcraft folder so I could try to avoid having to download and install it all over again. However, I've now reinstalled wine (64-bit now), and the nvidia drivers from the rpmfusion repos (also 64-bit), and when I try to start WoW, it says it cannot load OpenGL. I'm wondering if anyone knows what's up, and if there's a solution that doesn't involve reinstalling WoW.

I've just installed the proprietary ATI drivers from the AMD website and that all went fine. After that I restarted my pc and executed the following in the terminal:
Code:
atiode -P60 -H localhost:0; echo $?
However, that returns 2 which means that a render error occurred. Also, OpenGL reports that shaders are not supported.

I was configuring mythtv and when I was in the video settings I set it up to use OpenGL. Now I can no longer see video and I can't get back to the settings screen to disable OpenGL. Is there a config file that I can edit to disable OpenGL or someway to revert everything back to default. I tried completely removing the frontend and reinstalling it but that didn't do anything.

Just installed most recent 64-bit Lucid RC last night and after fiddling around through Compiz, I cannot figure out how to drag an open program over to the next desktop workspace.
I use 4-workspaces (4x1) and while running 9.10, I could grab the title bar of an open program and drag it from workspace 1 to 2 or 3.
Now I can right click the title bar then move to another workspace or drag the program halfway into the next work space '2', then click over to workspace '2' and complete the move. But I would like to be able to completely drag it over again.
How is this accomplished?

I'm trying to make every workspace its own workspace basically including the bottom panels and their windows, e.g firefox, gimp etc... I want every workspace to to truly be its own workspace. If I open a window in work space 2, it should stay only appear in workspace 2. 1.How would I do that using compiz? I'd love to be able to have my virtualbox windows, go specifically to workspace 3. 2.Whats the best way to have a program go to a specific workspace using compiz?

I'm running Debian Lenny with GNOME on a ThinkPad T43. Some OpenGL apps like the game Trigger run great, while others like Stellarium crash my system beyond recovery. I get a black screen, I can see the mouse cursor and move it at a very slow speed, but nothing else. I can't switch to a different terminal or restart X with ctrl-alt-bksp.
I assume that the problematic apps do not like the laptop's integrated graphics chip? Is there a way to know ahead of time what apps might be troublesome, before actually running them? I hate hard resets.

Anyone know how to launch a program from CLI (command line) to a specific viewport? I start programs all the time from the CLI and there are times when I'm in "typing demon" mode and don't want to touch the mouse. Being able to launch a program to a certain viewport (Compiz, w. effects) would be really helpful at times.
I'm familiar with wmctrl and i can use the -a and -c options to switch to and close windows fine. I only have 1 desktop (9 viewports, though), and wmctrl's support for viewport seems limited at best. Ideally, I'd like to launch a program to a specific viewport, but just being able to move an existing one to a specific viewport would work, too.
Please note: I'm talking about moving apps to viewports AD HOC or DYNAMICALLY, not in a fixed way like I believe devilspie and such (and Compiz' Place plugin). Depending on my task, I need to quickly launch several apps to different viewports, and this VARIES for me a lot. ubuntu 10.04 lts / gnome / compiz w. full effects
