View 1 RepliesI'm planning to upgrade my wife's computer when 10.04 comes out, what is a good cost effective video card to support compiz effects?
View 5 Replies View RelatedTwo of the most impressive bits of software I have found yet but... Since I installed compiz, VLC is showing an invisible area where the video should be. It does this with all formats and remains this way even if I switch back to Metacity from Compiz. Basically I can see the frame and decoration for the window but no contents. When I maximise I just get black. Other video apps work fine but I'd like to get my beloved VLC working again if possible. Of course Compiz installation could be unrelated and a red herring.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Karmic Koala 64 bit on my Lenovo T400 laptop with switchable graphics having both Intel and ATI video cards. I've set my bios to use the intel card only and turned the automatic switching off. So far so good, but I'd like to turn on compiz for basic window animations. When I try to start compiz by selecting
Code:
"Appearance Preferences" -> "Visual Effects" -> "Normal"
I get an error message saying "Desktop effects cannot be enabled"
Code:
"System" -> "Administration" -> "Hardware Drivers"
doesn't show any new drivers that could be installed. This was working out of the box when I first installed Karmic Koala a few month ago, but things got messed up when I installed the restricted drivers for my ATI card. Now I can enable compiz if I switch to ATI from my bios settings and install the drivers but I don't want to use it due to high power consumption and I've removed the ATI drivers.
Here is my xorg.conf file:
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

I have just upgraded from a fully functional 9.10 to 10.04 which doesn't seem to find the correct intel video drivers when trying to activate compiz extra desktop effects on my laptop...
[Code].....
I tried reinstalling the video drivers using sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel with no luck, telling me I already am using the latest version.
I have Compiz Config Settings Manager installed on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine. All the effects are working properly and everything is running fine. However when i play video with VLC Media Player, i would only get audio and no video. After looking this up i changed the output to X11 vidoe Output. I started getting video and audio. But when i switch to fullscreen mode the fullscreen video window is rendered by Compiz and thus has all of those window effects like wobbly, minimize, maximize and stuff are also applied to the full screen video. It also does not have all those controls that vlc normally shows when you wiggle your mouse in full-screen mode. I tried disabling the Video Playback option from the CCSM window, but to no avail.
The same thing also happens for the full screen view of Google Chrome. And the only way to leave full screen is to press F11 again. In this case the tab stacking area which drops down doesn't appear at all, also the exit full screen option which too drops down also does not appear. It seems Compiz is blocking all of those interactive buttons like the floating control panel in VLC and Tab stacking area in Chrome.
When I play a fullscreen flash video, it works fine the first time I open it, and then after that if I close it and open it again it appears, behind all my other windows, including firefox, gnome-panel, and glx-dock. This only happens under compiz - metacity is fine. This is all because I let my little brother play with compiz settings. I don't know if Linux is ready for the home user, but it certainly isn't ready for my brother.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just started using Linux and am having troubles getting various drivers to work/install i've tried to install an nvidia 32bit linux graphics driver which fails once you right click it, display/run it and the progress bar gets to the end and just comes up red saying failed (can't remember what it exactly says)
i've also tried to install my pci wireless driver, the readme that came with it is very confusing, i tried to run the autorun.sh file, which doesnt seem to-do anything. i think i got somewhere by putting in code to the terminal which i got from the readme, but no luck.
Also is their a chipset driver i have to install? as with windows, when my comp starts all the fans come on at 100% then software throttles them once in windows, wheras with ubuntu their just 100% all the time.
i've tried looking for other threads to cure my problem with no luck. But did notice alot of people ask to see lspci results, here it is..

I recently installed Linux Mint 9 and am having problems with an application that requires Java Web Starter. I was able to find and install it on my computer running Ubuntu 10.01, but can't seem to locate Java Web Starter or make it work on my Linux Mint 9 system. I tried the Java site but couldn't get it to work.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi just installed eclipse, the newewst version from the developer website of course, because the one out of the software center is more than outdated.
Now i have the problem that i don't have any icon in the starter. When i start eclipse i can right click on the icon and make it stick to the startet forever but it has no icon and i can't change it.
So my question is now: How do i add one to the starter? And i don't want to use the desktop right clicking and create a new starter variation of the solution. Firefox has no .desktop file for it's icon in the starter either.
P.S.: For the futurue version a right click on the starter->add or right click on and icon->edit
To understand, I have two partitions in my hard disk laptop, one for data and the other one for windows xp and I also have a extern usb hard disk, this one for ubuntu. What I want to do is to boot Windows with GRUB starter without having to connect the USB hard disk (the hard disk where is ubuntu installed) to laptop. Because when I try to do it without USB hard disk connected, my laptop say "ERROR" and I would like don't be changing from grub starter to windows starter and from windows starter to grub starter each time I want to be with linux or windows isn't the usb disk. Is there any way to relocate the grub files to the internal disk laptop and start up Windows without the external USB hard disk (that has Ubuntu installed). Can I do that all necessary to carry out when I'll start up my laptop (for start up with linux and windows) be found in the data partition laptop hard disk and don't be found in the usb disk? How can I do that replace?

I have already found intructions on how to dual boot the way I want, and how to change the wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter. I also already have experiance with Ubuntu, Unity 3D, and Windows XP.What would be the best solution?
I would like to run linux on windows 7 starter. Google tells me that I have to upgrade at least to home premium to have windows virtual pc, but that is not for free..besides I don t need xp, i just want to run linux..So I would like to know if there is another way, a free program/virtual machine for win 7 to run linux on.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to watch a certain video on [url]...., but I get an error message instead. Some videos can be played, so I'm thinking it's a form of restriction, but I can't be sure.I tried using a few proxies, but on some the error message persists and on others the video doesn't load. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and Firefox 3.5.8.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).
I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.
Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?
is this possible? Or does one have to use the binary blobs?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a video file in which the audio runs faster than the video, so they quickly go out of sync. The way to fix it would be to separate the audio and video streams, speed up the video (the audio is FINE, it's the video that's wrong), and then recombining them. What is the easiest way for doing that?
View 7 Replies View Relatedvideo playback is like I have applied a blueish sepia filter over it. And this is just the playback from totem player or mplayer, and not the playback from ..... (and generally online streaming) - this works just fine. this messy video playback also appears when I use cheese to capture video with my webcam. Note that the preview picture of the video file on nautilus has the natural colours it should have.
at first when I installed the os this particular problem didn't exist, but it came up the time I decided to follow the "comprehensive multimedia guide". So now I have all the pros of following the guide, but this is a major con...
this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy system: Pentium 4 3.6 GHz, 3 Gb DDR ram, GeForce 210 video card, Ubuntu 10.04.
I have previously used Cinelerra-cv (on Karmic) and recently Openshot (on Lucid) with not much trouble. I have been sampling other video editors (Kdenlive, avidemux, kino etc). Now I have my video card crashing whichever I use, mainly when trying to load clips. I have disabled Compiz, uninstalled all video editors and then reinstalled one at a time. I still get early video crashes whichever I try.
I am setting up a MythTV environment to switch from Windows based MediaPortal (with a high number of disturbing bugs). Yet, I have three difficulties, which I want to discuss with you. They are:
- No audio via HDMI see [URL]
- Video resolution seems to change during video playback
- Channels cannot be found via DVB-S [URL]
As you can see, I have created three posts to keep discussions focused.
Alltogether I have the following setup:
- AMD 5050e CPU
- 8 GByte RAM
- Biostar TA890GXE
- Samsung LE40M86BD, connected via HDMI (and only HDMI)
- Mythbuntu 10.10 with proprietary drivers installed
- Technisat Skystar HD2 DVB-S card (two times)
Now, here is the problem:
Whenever I playback any video material using e.g. VLC, the screen resolution changes. This also applies when playback the video in a window and not fullscreen. The problem is that whenever the screen resolution changes, short time later the TV set blanks screen and show the TV set specific information "unsupported video mode".
How can I enforce to stay in the configured video mode?
Can someone tell me what the architecture of iMac Intel Core 2 Duo is? I am trying to figure out which of the following images given on the webpage below to download:[URL]..This is the list:
[alpha][amd64][arm][armel][hppa][i386][ia64][mips][mipsel][powerpc][sparc][s390][source][multi-arch]
I think there are two different images (namely i386 and ia64) for intel-based systems, right? Which one should I download for my Intel Core 2 Duo? Is this a 64-bit architecture? Should I use amd64?

Could it be the low amount of RAM?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am semi new to the embedded linux scene. I dont use UNIX much but I have played around with it and know how powerful it is. Currently just finished a degree in Computer System Engineering in the UK and have a whole summer break to mess around doing something. So I have decided to start a project I've been planning.
Starting the project, first of all I need to find a good handheld system I can work on. This is where I'll be importing the code onto/applications. At the moment all I want it to do is boot and run a distro of linux, but in the future I am going to be working on making it 3/4G and wirelessly able.
What I need:
-Size is roughly around the same size as a ipod maybe, or smaller.
-Needs a nice screen, nothing massive but needs to be easily readable.
-Text entry is needed, but im sure a few buttons can do it.. keypad would be really really nice though.
-A 3.5mm audio jack (or something similar to plug headphones into) is needed or it needs to have the capiblity to install this.
-Wifi/3G support, needs to be able to support these in the future or able for me to hack them in.
-Rechargeable powersource.
-Cost, nothing mega expensive !
