Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unclaimed Display, Compiz Won't Run After System Restore?

Aug 1, 2010

I tarred my system (NVidia based) and restored it on 2 other different machines. (Intel g965 and SIS 661/741/760) On both of them I see

Code:
$ sudo lshw -C display *-display UNCLAIMED As a result I can't enable compiz (visual effects), cairo dock is unusable (noGL version, GL won't run at all) - it shows a huge black rectangle as its background even when the dock is hidden. I think the problem is that the video driver is not enabled, I need your help making it work. After the restore during the 1st boot X complained that it can't find NVidia and showed me the options use default settings generate new settings (I used this one) So now one of the PCs:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unclaimed Display Controller 82852/855 GM Integrated Graphics Device?

Jul 9, 2011

I really wanna use the OS. I wiped my laptop and installed it but I can't change my screen resolution (it's stuck at 1024 X 768 and my refresh rate is at 0 HZ) I tried installing a driver that was for both the i9xx and i8xx chipset family but it doesn't look like it helped anything. I want to be able to play World of Warcraft Wrath of The Lich King but when I try it the way the computer is now the the frame rate is really really slow. I also need to fix my audio because there's crackling that comes from the speakers often. I attached a screen shot of what I get when I enter the command: sudo lshw -c video Changing the resolution isn't the problem so much as the fact that I can't change the refresh rate from "0 HZ" to anything higher so that my game will play smoothly. I would also like to put compiz fushion on my laptop as well but I don't believe it will work unless I resolve this problem.

to back-up and eventually restore compiz settings, is it enough to back-up and restore the .compiz directory in $HOME? Reason is that the setting in my classic gnome set-up are different and partially conflict with the unity settings. Since I want to be able to run both environment (to give Unity a chance) I'd like to be able to switch settings easily.

Ubuntu :: Way To Restore Only Application Switcher From Metacity When Using Compiz?

Aug 19, 2010

Is there a way to restore only the application switcher from metacity when using compiz?I generally like compiz on, but there is not an application switcher within compiz that provides the usability of the standard metacity switcher. They are fine when you have only a few windows open, but if you are running many apps (some of them with multiple windows) it becomes quite hard to identify the app you want.

Ubuntu :: Radeon + Compiz + Rotate = Display Corruption

Apr 21, 2011

Installed Natty a few days ago and everything was working fine. I have a dual head setup with the left monitor rotated Clockwise 90 degrees (AKA rotate left). When I setup the the displays properly, instead of just cloning, I noticed a problem, making Unity unusable. When I apply the rotation either in the xorg.conf fle or using xrandr, the display shows a corrupt looking image. When I turn compiz off and use metacity instead it works perfectly fine.

Display Adapter:

Code:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Cedar PRO [Radeon HD 5450]

xorg.conf:

Code:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Desktop"
Screen "RightScreen"

Ubuntu Networking :: Unclaimed When Working Driver Installed?

I'm using a Dell with Broadcom bcmwl6.inf driver. I tried the guides using ndiswrapper, but they didn't work for me. What worked was simply going to System -> Administration -> Hardware drivers and activating the Broadcom STA proprietary driver. That sounds great, but every time I restart, I have to remove and install the driver from Hardware Drivers.

What should I do to keep the driver loaded and claimed at the start. This is my lshw -C network before and after removing and installing wireless card driver.

Ubuntu :: How To Create 10.4 System Restore

Aug 11, 2010

First off, Ubuntu 10.4 is working great on my new laptop and I really enjoy it. And it is super fast. My question is now that I have everything all set up, all my packages, my windows settings, and my ATI driver, my updates, etc., I want to be able to keep it all. Maybe somebody could point me in the right direction or give me some better terminology. Would love to learn more about distros in the future. For now I just don't want to have to do all this updating again. There are a few things I have found like Clonezilla and others, but they seem to be a bit advanced and more for servers.

Ubuntu :: System Restore Problem

Sep 8, 2010

A friend has a netbook running a dual boot setup with Ubuntu (9.10, I think) and Windows XP. She recently decided to run system restore on the Windows partition and can't boot into Windows anymore. I told her I would help her fix it tonight, but before she gets here I figured it would probably be helpful to ask if this is a well known issue and if anyone has any suggestions on the best method of fixing it.

I planned on first making sure the grub is targeting the Windows partition correctly, but I suspect the problem could be that the system restore point she used was one from before she had a linux partition. If that is the case does anyone know if this could potentially destroy the windows installation?

Ubuntu :: Equivalent To System Restore Like Windows ?

Mar 14, 2010

Does Ubuntu have an equivalent to system restore like windows?

I just want to know what the best way is to save everything , as in settings and programs etc. , just in case there's some sort of major failure.

Any ghosting programs that will allow me to save the last known good configuration? or clone the entire drive?

Since I've been using Ubuntu I haven't run into any major screwups like with windows , but there are some times I've installed it and it took a while to get different things working. I don't want to have to go through the whole process again if there's ever a major malfunction.
