Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Compiz/3d Graphics In 10.10 With Nouveau
Oct 18, 2010
All 3d applications run with a solid black screen, and compiz will try to revert to the fallback wm, even though I have the new nouveau/gallium setup in 10.10.
glxgears appears to *think* it has a working screen, but it stays blank:
Code:
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
3570 frames in 5.0 seconds = 713.841 FPS
3298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 659.541 FPS

I have installed Lucid on my old T61p. And I am using the NVidia driver Nouveau. But I cannot work out how to enable compiz with it. Is it possible to have composite effects with this driver?

I'm using a remix of F14 called Fusion Linux. It's all the same as fedora14. It's come preinstalled with xorg x11 nouveau driver. So, i'm not using Nvidia driver. Now, the problem is that the graphics in wine application are really poor. Fonts appear to be really hazy. See this image to get me better: [URL].. In earlier version of fedora and wine, i used nvidia driver. Graphics used to be good at that time.

I've got a "little" problem with fedora 13: dual head with nouveau is not working. gnome-display-properties recognizes two displays and i can configure it (left, right, mirroring, ...) but first display is always in standby. Seems it doesn't get a signal from graphics controller. Desktop seems to work fine (can move the mouse pointer on the other screen into "the black hole"). I use Fedora 13 x86_64.

I honestly have no clue how this happened, but compiz now refuses to start. I discovered that somehow GLX had been uninstalled and replaced by SWX (the software rasterizer - this gives Brian Paul as the OpenGL/GLX server vendor strings). Reinstalled GLX, currently have Direct Rendering and the proper vendor strings (SGI and Tungsten, I believe).Still nothing. OpenGL seems to be working fine, as Nexuiz runs pretty well.I tried running compiz --replace from the terminal to get any errors, but it just spits out "Falling back to default window manager", without so much as a hex code to tell me why--------Update---------Ran compiz --debug --replace to see if I could get anything else. It gives the following:Quote:taintsauce@the-****ing-fury:~$ compiz --replace --debugcompiz (core) - Debug: Could not stat() file /home/taintsauce/.compiz/plugins/libcore.so : No such file or directorycompiz (core) - Debug: Could not stat() file /usr/lib/c

I'm having problems with my graphics. I have ATI mobility radeon hd 3650 and I get an issue with desktop effects. They can't be enabled even though the card is supported. I had some trouble with installation and used this thread's instructions: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9133906. I finally seem to have it installed and configured but I still can't use desktop effects. Also this whole process started because I couldn't get minecraft working getting the GLX13 error.

My laptop is a Dell XPS 1340, it contains an integrated 9400M, and a discrete G210m. In trying to get vgaswitcheroo working with these cards, it seemed that every time I tried to switch outputs, my computer would freeze.
Code:
cd /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo
sudo chmod 777 switch
echo DIS > switch # Same with DDIS, same with OFF It seems like what would happen if vgaswitcheroo turned off the driver (nouveau) powering the card on PCI bus 3 (the 9400M), and attempted to turn on the driver powering the G210m, which doesn't exist.. I think? Can somebody confirm?

I have installed debian jessie stable and would like to use hardware decoding with the nouveau driver. I have tested with the propietary nvidia 340.65 driver and MPV and successfully enabled hardware decoding. However, there seems to be a frame sync issue with mutter and nvidia that I want to avoid. I've followed the instructions for enabling hardware decoding with nouveau here, hURL..., but haven't had success. What I've done so far is install jessie stable, run updates, install mplayer2, mpv, mesa-vdpau-drivers, and follow the previously mentioned guide. Mplayer2 throws an error about not finding the proper codec. MPV at least attempts to play the video but promptly freezes the system so that I can't recover without rebooting. URL....

I'd like to run a real-time kernel with the latest linux-rt patch, for 2.6.33. Incidentally, the .33 kernel was the first to include the Nouveau driver, and seeing that I cannot get the proprietary NVidia driver to compile --the RT patch really messes things up and the patches for nv-linux.h out there all seem incomplete-- I thought it would be a good idea to switch to Nouveau and save me from additional headaches.
I'm running sid, and as you certainly know, the Nouveau driver has been backported to the stock Debian kernel, 2.6.32-5-686. It works very well, all I had to do was change my xorg.conf with this line : Driver "nouveau".
However, when I boot my new 2.6.33-rt kernel, Xorg stops here :
[skipping a lot of stuff that seems to work ok]
(II) LoadModule: "nouveau"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nouveau_drv.so
(II) Module nouveau: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.7.7, module version = 0.0.15
[Code]....
So what is so different about the backport to 2.6.32 ? How come the DRM lib, or whatever it is, doesn't work with 2.6.33 ?
I just thought of something, I'll try compiling my 2.6.33 kernel without the -rt patch and I'll let you know.

I've just done a clean install of 10.04.01 (64bit) and am having a few issues with the Nouveau driver.
1. I'm getting a series of horizontal lines across the screen ( image).
2. I'm getting, what appear to be, GPU lockups. This appears to happen after an amount of browsing and rendering images.
My system setup is:
10.04.01 LTS
grep 'Monitor name' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Monitor name: EA231WMi
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G71 [GeForce 7300 GS] (rev a1)

Just put 11.4, 32 bit on a system with an Intel D865 GLC motherboard and 865G built in graphics controller. While the install went OK it turns out that X is totally hosed. After fighting with things for a while and discovering that Sax2 had disappeared I poked at Google and discovered some other poor folks that have had similar issues with Intel video cards. Based on a suggestion for a doc in OpenSuse.org I edited the file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf
and added the line: Driver "intel" to it - after that things got better. Obviously the install process had not identified the video card correctly. I'm now left with another issue - while the system now identifies the driver and can talk to the monitor correctly, a Samsung S23A350H I can't open a window after X comes up and I login - basically the same issue as the unresolved Bug 673873: [Bug 673873] intel [865G] Windows flash rapidly or don't appear if Desktop Effects are on in KDE and GNOME
The workaround is to turn Desktop Effects off but since X doesn't work I can't figure out how to do that. I can't find the gnome-xgl-switch or a xgl-switch that used to exist to do it on the command line so that's out. Someone said you could drop the empty file "disable-compiz" in the ~/.config/compiz directory and that would do it but in 11.4 that directory doesn't exist. how to disable "Desktop Effects"/XGL/compiz or whatever it is now called on the command line in OpenSuse 11.4 without a gui if that is still possible?

Ever since I upgraded my video driver (the proprietary NVIDIA drivers) to 270.18, I have been experiencing lag when typing and when using Compiz as my WM. I can work around both problems by switching the WM to Metacity, but obviously I don't want to continue using that. I have tried changing my Compiz settings but to little avail. If you want my OS and graphics card, the OS is Ubuntu 10.10 and the graphics card is a NVIDIA GT 330M.

Using either MPlayer or mplayer2 under the video player SMplayer, when clicking on any drop-down menus, the video will freeze and then skip. Once the drop-down menu animation has completed, the video playback will play normally. This happens when using VDPAU to play back H.264 MKV files. Audio playback of the video is never interrupted. why VDPAU will not play nice with SMplayer & Compiz?

I have recently started using openshot to edit video and have found it very good. Previously I have been using Kino and openshot certainly seems more intuitive. Trouble is the more ambitious my productions the more juddery and prone to crashing the program becomes So I am thinking of an upgrade. At the moment I am using on board graphics. Or would more ram be the first thing to go for.

trying to get Ubuntu to work properly on a Del Dimension 2400. It has on board Intel Extreme graphics card. [URL] It installs and but runs slowly when the ubuntu GUI is up and running. The CPU is maxed out for quite small tasks. Selecting additional drivers gives nothing, so I guess it isn't running the graphics card in hardware acceleration - which is slowing down the system. I want to buy a graphics card to use on this Dell PC. It uses PCI expansion cards. I'm thinking of ebaying a second hand graphics card.

I installed Debian Sid yesterday, then I installed KDE. Now I want to install Compiz using this guide: http://wiki.debian.org/Compiz but it says I need to edit xorg.conf file, which doesn't exist for me. I'm trying to install Compiz for hours, so I think there is no other option for me than posting this problem.

Two of the most impressive bits of software I have found yet but... Since I installed compiz, VLC is showing an invisible area where the video should be. It does this with all formats and remains this way even if I switch back to Metacity from Compiz. Basically I can see the frame and decoration for the window but no contents. When I maximise I just get black. Other video apps work fine but I'd like to get my beloved VLC working again if possible. Of course Compiz installation could be unrelated and a red herring.

Code:
$ sudo lshw -C display *-display UNCLAIMED As a result I can't enable compiz (visual effects), cairo dock is unusable (noGL version, GL won't run at all) - it shows a huge black rectangle as its background even when the dock is hidden. I think the problem is that the video driver is not enabled, I need your help making it work. After the restore during the 1st boot X complained that it can't find NVidia and showed me the options use default settings generate new settings (I used this one) So now one of the PCs:

I'm using currently ubuntu 10.10. Having a nvidia gt220 with the proprietary drivers. I used compiz for a while. It works quite well, with vsync on and so on. But one thing bothers me all the time: In any opengl program (like a game or the unigen benchmarks) or on video playback (no matter if its the default video player, xbmc or what ever) I see some kind of stutter. About every second or so it jumps one frame forward and then two back. Till the next second it plays fluid.
To be able to observe this easily you need a video (or a opengl scene) where the whole screen scrolls in a medium speed but smooth. Than you can observ how it "jumps" every second. If the scrolling is too slow you wont observe it. Now, if I turn composite off this disapears. All play fluid. Ofcourse I get tearing as long as I do not also disable the composite extension in the xorg.conf, but this is another story. Is there a possibility to fix this stuttering with compiz active? Cause I use this pc to watch movies quite often so this would render compiz unusable.
