Ubuntu Multimedia :: 1366x768 Not Listed Under Options With ATI Radeon HD 5830?

May 26, 2011

I've just bought a new rig. The graphics card (as listed in the title) is a ATI Radeon HD 5830. With the normal out of the box drivers I can get a resolution of 1366x768 (The native resolution of my 32inch panel) but the 3D performance isn't good. With the ATI proprietary drivers installed 1366x768 isn't in the options (The ATI menu and the normal one)So I need to generate an xorg.conf and add the resolution?[edit] OK so I checked to see if the 3D performance was any better with the proprietary drivers (despite the funky resolution) and it caused Minecraft (The only game I really play under Linux) to freeze on startup. I think what I'll do is stick with the Radeon Open Source driver (which runs all the visual effects nicely anyway) and just do all my gaming in Windows

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Get 1366x768 With Fglrx

May 7, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 and using the fglrx driver from repo, but i can't get 1366x768 resolution. I generate xorg.conf with "sudo X -configure" and put in the Modeline that was copied from windows powerstrip, which works fine under windows with catalyst. and restart X, the lcd gets 1366x768 resolution as expected. but the "sudo X -configure" generated xorg.conf was using "radeon" driver, but blender won't work with it, etc... I want to use "fglrx" driver. So I change the Driver section from "radeon" to "fglrx" and restart X, it wont start now, telling me that out of range or something.

Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "radeon"
BusID "PCI:1:5:0"
EndSection

After cheering the Ubuntu Developers team on the great work they did with hardware recognition, I was suddenly stunned by the silence from my USB speakers this afternoon. Although previously correctly recognized and fully functional, after installing several non- audio updates, the sound from my USB speakers ceased. Moreover, this pair of Logitech Z-5 USB speakers aren't even listed on the Sound menu (System > Preferences > Sound) although lsusb lists them correctly. I have an embedded sound adapter to which no speakers are connected. My PC runs on Ubuntu 10.04. What should I do to get the sound through my USB speakers?

Ubuntu :: Resolution Does Not Give The Option For 1366x768

Sep 20, 2010

I am having a bit of an issue with xubuntu's resolution detection. I currently have a monitor plugged into my machine, the xubuntu machine picks up the native resolution of 1920x1080, but for some reason it does not give the option for 1366x768. i find this weird because any monitor that can do 1920x1080 should be able to do 1360x768 as well. The machine is running an intel card, so manual resolution changing via nvidia control panel isnt an option. Im wondering, what is the simplest way to enter a custom resolution into xorg.conf, or any other easy methods of adding the 1360x768 option into the machine?

Debian Multimedia :: MPlayer No Longer Listed In Apps Menu After System Update

Aug 3, 2010

MPlayer was working just fine last night, but today I'm having problems which may be due to me performing a system update. I noticed that MPlayer was no longer listed in my Applications menu and I no longer had the option of opening videos with it. However, I now had Gnome MPlayer which must have been installed with the update because I never installed it. Whilst going through Synaptic, I found that the MPlayer GUI had been removed, so I re-installed it. However nothing happened when I attempted to open videos with it.

When I tried to use it through the terminal I got the error message:
mplayer: relocation error: mplayer: symbol codec_wav_tags, version LIBAVFORMAT_52 not defined in file libavformat.so.52 with link time reference

I found a bug report on this very problem here [URL]. The conclusion was that the person filing the bug report was using a version of ffmpeg not found in Debian and that he'd need a version of MPlayer built with his version of ffmpeg libs. I'm assuming that this is also the case with me, however I'm not sure how to go about finding a build or simply building a version of MPlayer with whatever version of ffmpeg that I'm using. For reference, I'm using Squeeze.

Ubuntu :: Acer X183h 1366x768 Custom Resolution - System Became Unstable ?

Jun 25, 2010

Ive been searching for days and days trying to get this monitor to output in 1366x768 on Ubuntu 10.04. I knew it was possible, i did it late one night about a month back, but my system became unstable (not due to the resolution, i had setup a firewall to block all incoming till i unlock it, then another application to connect before i log in, and somehow it managed to lock out my keyboard on the login screen AND the recovery console, so i decided to just reinstall it)

Anyways, i found out exactly how to do it (for the Acer 183h that is). Ive spent about 48 hours total pouring through documents and found the documentation for nvidia-settings (easy find, i know, i was hoping to find an easy solution like what im typing up)

So, i figured out I could use Nouvaeu to get the proper settings (since all the modeline calcs dont do 1366, only 1360.) What i did was i went into the log file for the xorg, conf right after i installed, and in there somewhere near the middle it says what the timings are.

Code:

And i inputed that modeline into the monitor section, like so:

Code:

One of the two EDID commands is an old one, i just left it in there so when i was searching throught the xorg log i could find the section really quickly.

(BTW, im not sure if these timings are 100 accurate until i reboot my livecd and check, but im sure thier pretty damn close, and my monitor hasent exploded yet if your worried bout it, grab your livecd, open your xorg.conf, and it "should" be in the monitor section)

Next, i had to input all the Options to not search for different modes into the device section:

Code:

And finally, i had to set the screen to output the 1366x768, entering Modes "1366x768_60_0"

Code:

In the Modeline and Modes section, its VERY important that you have it in the format i have it in. The Modeline name MUST be completely custom, by adding either letters or extra _0.

And thats it!

Reboot, restart X, whatever (I prefer reboot, gives me time to ponder ) and you should be good to go.

(I know this may seem like a beginners knowledge type of thing, but im a beginner, pretty damn bright, and it still took me 4 days So, if this helps just one other person, ive done my part)

Im also pretty sure this method will work with other wide screen monitors, as long as you get the timings off Nouveou via LiveCD or installing the driver.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Configure ATI Radeon HD 4650

Apr 1, 2010

I recently decided to upgrade my old desktop instead of buying a new one. I figured I would go ahead and max out the specs on the motherboard while I was at it. I had a standard AGP slot and the best graphics card I could find for AGP was the Radeon HD 4650 (AGP 1GB GDDR2). So I ordered the parts and went on my merry way.I installed the card and did a fresh install of 9.10, hoping to max perform my "new" system. The card was acting kinda fishy on the live boot and I had to reboot a few times before it magically worked. I got installed etc and when I booted it worked, but it turned out performance was painful. When using Firefox the delay when scrolling down the screen was literally unbearable. No problem right, I used the restricted drivers app to go ahead and install the ATI drivers hoping that it would auto-magically fix things.

System booted but once I logged in the screen would just fill with freezing and garbage so it was impossible to get anything done. I experimented with all three options but this is what ended up being my solution. Download your ATI driver using this site: AMD Graphics Drivers & Software Just select Linux in the OS Select column.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI Radeon 5750 Drivers?

Apr 18, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 64 bit (I had 32 bit before) and I want to get my graphics card working. I have an ATI Radeon 5750 hd card. I tried to use the proprietary drivers from "hardware drivers" but I get a watermark in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and the resolution is terrible. Also, the whole screen seems to be vibrating, which kills the eyes, so I got rid of that driver.

I also tried to download and install the driver from ATI website [URL]... but ubuntu couldn't open the pakage. I gave me some error message about the "encoding text" or something like that. So how (if it's possible) do I get my video card working so that I can use compiz and run 1080 resolution? I have been through tons of threads but none of them helped my any.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI Driver And Radeon 5750

May 13, 2010

I installed Lucid when I had my Nvidia board in the computer. Yesterday I pulled out the nvidia board and installed my new Radeon 5750. Hearing that the Open Source driver is the way to go, I first decided to try that. I edited xorg.conf replacing "nvidia" with "radeon", since this is the module name (right?) but it still doesn't seem to load. Does anyone have an example of what a properly configured xorg.conf is supposed to look like using the ATI Open Source driver? I get X up and running in "low graphics mode", but can never get beyond that.

Trying to turn on window effects causes a "searching for drivers" dialogue to appear and then disappear without success. A quick "glxinfo |grep -i render" indicates that it is indeed in the software mode. I even tried to manually modprobe the radeon module and restart GDM, but still nothing. At first I thought this was a limitation of the Open Source drivers on 5xxx series boards, but this page suggests that it should work in "gold" status. I have since installed FGLX and it is just terribly buggy, so I am hoping to use the Open Source driver.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI Radeon X1700 Flickers In 10.04?

I am a total beginner to ubuntu. I have installed ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition with a CD on my laptop as only OS. So far (three weeks) ubuntu has convinced me. However, my screen starts flickering regularly after a while (even when the computer is idle) and the only solution so far has been to suspend/shut down. Ubuntu Multimedia :: Ati Radeon 9000 + 10.10 = Brightness?

Jan 23, 2011

I have been just pretty much having fun with Ubuntu and a couple other distros for a couple years and have not yet ran into a problem like this. I'm pretty good in a command line environment although I end up googling syntax a lot b/c of that wonderful memory I have! Anyways..

I am running an older machine: P4P800 ASUS Mobo, P4 2 Ghz, 3G RAM and an ATI Radeon 9000.OS: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Issues: Seems that anything that Compiz has to render the brightness is really low. CairoDock (w/ OpenGL) does not render like it does on other machines that I have, looks like garbage. I've come to the conclusion that I need to get a better video driver (Hope I'm correct here otherwise I've been going the wrong direction for awhile now).

Things I've tried through research around the net: I've attempted installing fglrx(command line style) from several tutorials I've found here and there. Most of them for older versions of Ubuntu and if I'm remembering right there have been a few significant changes lately, which may be causing my issues? Of course I've tried the easy ways: Installed all fglrx/ati/radeon related packages in Synaptics Package Manager
Checked System > Admin. > Additional Drivers before and after package installations
Ati Website - the drivers that they have are for XFree86. I don't think they can run on XOrg - it's a completely different setup? Again, I don't have a great understanding on how the back end of all this works, so bear with em.

I ran: echo options radeon modeset=0 > /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf To disable KMS.
Rebooted - Video was much worse I then ran: echo options radeon modeset=1 > /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf To re-enable KMS Rebooted again. Everything ran fine but I didn't have my Cairo Dock > which I can deal with, that's not why I'm posting.. Well, that's a good chunk of it - there's more but I don't remember most of it as I've been working at this on and off for weeks. Again, a lot of this was tried upon researching anything and everything I could find on the net - so some of it might sound ridiculous, I was just trying anything that would work!!

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Radeon Card Not Performing Well?

I've tried reinstalling the driver several times.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Want To Extract Music With More Options

Jan 1, 2010

I want to extract *aka rip *aka import songs from my CD to my computer. In two different formats, one being lossless format (FLAC) and lossy format (MP3).I want control over the kbps in the lossy format and I also want to remove the licensing as this creates problems when trying to copy the songs over to my mobile device. And of course, include the metadata while extracting.

This all seems fairly simple right?Well, whenever I am extracting the songs from different applications it seems like I have no control over the preferences of the application or the extracting process. There's just a start button and that's it.I have tried the "Sound-Juicer" and "Banshee".Defaults settings for Sound-Juicer extracts at 128 kbps and Banshee extracts at 160 kbps only in ogg format. In the past I have done all my cd extracting in Windows, and I would really like to move over to linux in this field.I used Winamp back in the day and was really happy with the PRO version of it. Lame Mp3 Encoder with Winamp Pro.
