Sep 20, 2010I am having a bit of an issue with xubuntu's resolution detection. I currently have a monitor plugged into my machine, the xubuntu machine picks up the native resolution of 1920x1080, but for some reason it does not give the option for 1366x768. i find this weird because any monitor that can do 1920x1080 should be able to do 1360x768 as well. The machine is running an intel card, so manual resolution changing via nvidia control panel isnt an option. Im wondering, what is the simplest way to enter a custom resolution into xorg.conf, or any other easy methods of adding the 1360x768 option into the machine?

May 27, 2011I used startup-manager to change the timeout of my bootloader from 10 to 3, which it worked, but it also set my resolution for the bootloader and startup (where it shows the ubuntu logo) to 1024x768. how can I change it back to 1366x768, which it originally was when I installed.

Jun 25, 2010Ive been searching for days and days trying to get this monitor to output in 1366x768 on Ubuntu 10.04. I knew it was possible, i did it late one night about a month back, but my system became unstable (not due to the resolution, i had setup a firewall to block all incoming till i unlock it, then another application to connect before i log in, and somehow it managed to lock out my keyboard on the login screen AND the recovery console, so i decided to just reinstall it)
Anyways, i found out exactly how to do it (for the Acer 183h that is). Ive spent about 48 hours total pouring through documents and found the documentation for nvidia-settings (easy find, i know, i was hoping to find an easy solution like what im typing up)
So, i figured out I could use Nouvaeu to get the proper settings (since all the modeline calcs dont do 1366, only 1360.) What i did was i went into the log file for the xorg,conf right after i installed, and in there somewhere near the middle it says what the timings are.

And i inputed that modeline into the monitor section, like so:

One of the two EDID commands is an old one, i just left it in there so when i was searching throught the xorg log i could find the section really quickly.
(BTW, im not sure if these timings are 100 accurate until i reboot my livecd and check, but im sure thier pretty damn close, and my monitor hasent exploded yet if your worried bout it, grab your livecd, open your xorg.conf, and it "should" be in the monitor section)
Next, i had to input all the Options to not search for different modes into the device section:

And finally, i had to set the screen to output the 1366x768, entering Modes "1366x768_60_0"

In the Modeline and Modes section, its VERY important that you have it in the format i have it in. The Modeline name MUST be completely custom, by adding either letters or extra _0.
And thats it!
Reboot, restart X, whatever (I prefer reboot, gives me time to ponder ) and you should be good to go.
(I know this may seem like a beginners knowledge type of thing, but im a beginner, pretty damn bright, and it still took me 4 days So, if this helps just one other person, ive done my part)
Im also pretty sure this method will work with other wide screen monitors, as long as you get the timings off Nouveou via LiveCD or installing the driver.

Mar 24, 2010i recently moved away from ubuntu (as they wouldn't let me change my gdm themes lol) i installed lenny usin the net install for ia86 but i cannot change my screen resolution from 1024x768 to my card/monitors native setting of 1366x768 i have included a .txt taken from the benchmark an profile gizmo which i hope rovide any of you with all the info needed (to be honest i don't understand half of it) my laptop is a fujitsu amilo li3710 with dual core, 3gb ram an 160gb hd an a intel gma4500 with shared memory graphics

May 31, 2010I am new to opensuse and have installed 11.2 KDE. It is simply perfect for my system. However after the initial setup the display resolution was set perfectly fine for my 18.5" LED monitor, default resolution was 1366x768, and everything looked good from desktop to fonts but the OSS drivers didn't support compositing so I decided to switch to nvidia drivers. I installed the driver as shown in openSUSE repositories page, for my 6600GT card. Now after rebooting everything is stretched,even the fonts look really ugly and fuzzy.
I am unable to find any mode in Nvidia XServer settings that would correct the current ugly stretched display. I am unable to set 1366x768 manually as well, doing so my PC won't boot to KDM but rather sticks to console. Now it's for sure that my monitor and display card supports 1366x768 resolution but it's just that nvidia drivers/Nvidia XServer settings won't let me set that resolution. How can I set the resolution or even better if I can enable compositing using OSS drivers then that would be great an dm willing to switch back.

May 7, 2010I have been on Ubuntu for a total of about 1 hour now, as I have finally made the switch from Windows. So far so good, but I do have some learning to do. First off, when I got Ubuntu 10.04 installed, everything worked great! Video lagged a little however. No biggy. The next time I booted up, it asked if I wanted to install video card drivers. I thought this is why my video was lagging, so I said yes. It then automatically installed my nvidia card drivers.
Then when I rebooted, I was greeted with a 640x480 screen resolution. When I go to System->Preferences->Monitors, I am given a warning that says: "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics drivers vendor's tool instead?"
Regardless if I hit "yes" or "no" I am brought to windows that should allow me to change resolutions. However, the only resolutions I can choose are 640x480 and 320x240. I know my "monitor" can support higher resolutions as I was running it at higher resolutions before the switch to Ubuntu. (I put monitor in quotes, as I am using a large rear projection T.V. as my monitor). How I can get a higher resolution?

Jan 9, 2011I have an AMD Radeon HD 6950 and I know that no driver will be released for a while that works (current one causes xorg to crash and creates a reboot loop). Until then I have a 1920x1080 monitor running at 1280x1024 bc there are no higher settings.Is there any way to increase the resolution until the driver support comes? I tried a method involving xandr but that didnt work.

Jul 26, 2011I installed the latest Debian on an Atom 525 rig, with GMA 3150 integrated graphics. I have a 16:9 full HD monitor connected to the rig, but the available resolutions are not 16:9, except for the first and (roughly) the last:
1920x1080, 1680x1050, 1280x1024, 1152x864, 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480, 720x400
Now, 1920x1080 is the monitor's native resolution, but I really can't use it, stuff is just too small and not everything can be fixed by changing the system fonts' size. So I was wondering if there is a way to add some 16:9 resolutions, I'd look for 1600x900 and most of all 1280x720.I know that this usually gets done editing xorg.conf, but there's no such file in the /etc/X11 folder on my rig.

The system is not showing correct resolution in the grub menu and the splash screen is black, until I reach the logon screen.Screen resolution, and video rendering after booting is picture-perfect.I presume this is a bug of the sort "VBE does not support 1920x1080 wide screen resolution".Or, maybe I am missing some point.I hope there must be some workaround.

May 13, 2010First off, let me say: I'm a long time Linux hobbyist and recently installed Fedora 12. I've been looking (some say "lurking") around these forums for a bit after I loaded it up and let me say: Leigh, You're an amazing young man! Keep up the great work! I've a question: I've just put together a hobby computer: Pentuim 4, with 1 Gig of RAM and a Nvidia Geforce5700LE. When I install Fedora from a fresh install, everything works great: nice screen resolution, good graphics, etc. but no 3d or acceleration, so I'm very limited on my programs.
So I decided I need to upgrade my Nvidia driver. I followed Leigh's Nvidia setup guide after installing Fedora 12 (all four steps!) everything seemed to go fine, but when I reboot, I quickly see the Nvidia splash screen, but the screen then goes blank. Well, not really blank, I can see what appears to be a kind of cross-hatch pattern, plus I can see what should be my mouse cursor on screen (it also is a square shaped pattern). I suspect it may be at a screen resolution that my monitor doesn't support. Once there, the computer pretty much doesn't do anything else. Usually I can break into the x driver loading and go to the command prompt, but this latest time I can't even do that.

May 7, 2011I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 and using the fglrx driver from repo, but i can't get 1366x768 resolution. I generate xorg.conf with "sudo X -configure" and put in the Modeline that was copied from windows powerstrip, which works fine under windows with catalyst. and restart X, the lcd gets 1366x768 resolution as expected. but the "sudo X -configure" generated xorg.conf was using "radeon" driver, but blender won't work with it, etc... I want to use "fglrx" driver. So I change the Driver section from "radeon" to "fglrx" and restart X, it wont start now, telling me that out of range or something.

May 26, 2011I've just bought a new rig. The graphics card (as listed in the title) is a ATI Radeon HD 5830. With the normal out of the box drivers I can get a resolution of 1366x768 (The native resolution of my 32inch panel) but the 3D performance isn't good.With the ATI proprietary drivers installed 1366x768 isn't in the options (The ATI menu and the normal one)So I need to generate an xorg.conf and add the resolution?[edit] OK so I checked to see if the 3D performance was any better with the proprietary drivers (despite the funky resolution) and it caused Minecraft (The only game I really play under Linux) to freeze on startup. I think what I'll do is stick with the Radeon Open Source driver (which runs all the visual effects nicely anyway) and just do all my gaming in Windows

Jul 10, 2011I'm trying to find out when QME2572 (Qlogic) card became support by the kernel. We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

Feb 4, 2010I've been running 64-bit openSUSE 11.2 since shortly after it's release, on a quad core AMD Phenom based machine, using KDE as the Desktop. I have a USB-attached "multi-function" printer/scanner/etc., which worked fine with XSane under 11.1. On the same machine, with 11.2, I can still get a scan preview. But when I try a full scan, shortly after it starts, the progress bar stops, then XSane complains about an I/O error.
When I update openSUSE versions, if I can, I keep the old version completely intact, on the same machine. This includes the /home partition, I don't overwrite it. Sure it's a good deal more work to copy over the numerous files needed, but if there are any problems with the new software, it's extremely helpful to have a completely intact old environment for reference. I was able to do this, while updating 11.1 ==> 11.2. Booting the old 11.1 system on the same machine, I haven't encountered any scanning problems.
I haven't given a lot of details, because it's the same hardware, that should "in theory", mostly eliminate the hardware as a possible source of the problem. I'm hoping the problem can be resolved by focusing on any changes in SANE support, or XSANE itself, for USB attached scanners. It could be unrelated, but messages such as these are in /var/log/messages on the 11.2 sys:

If XSane is doing things in the wrong order, I'm wondering if it would be a problem especially for a combined printer/scanner, or would the problem still occur if the printer and scanner were two physically separate devices? I checked and there are similar messages in /var/log/messages with 11.1. But if it is an error in the sequence in which XSane does things, could it somehow cause problems under 11.2, yet not 11.1? I tried to find anything which might be related to USB device handling, which perhaps could interact. I came across messages such as these in 11.2, but not 11.1:

Is USB printer handling somehow different under 11.2? With a combined printer/scanner, could there be an interaction? I did some experimenting. I kind'a thought a scan preview was just a scan at low res. So I tried to do full scans, starting with the lowest res., and increasing. I was able to do successful full scans at 100 or 150. But from 200 on up, the higher the res., the shorter the time to get an I/O error. I'd normally use 600 or above, to get what I feel is a good looking scan. At 600 the error report is practically immediate. It's almost as if the error only occurs above a certain threshold, of amount of data per unit time. I should mention, although it's a color scanner, I'm scanning a black and white doc., so using that mode of XSane.
OpenSUSE :: 11.3 And KDE 4.4.4 Multi Monitor Support ?
May 9, 2010I have not checked for a while but did, before posting this, do a search for multi monitor support with KDE 4.4.4 and found nothing.
From what I understand 11.3 is out sometime next month and KDE 4.4.4 is the KDE environment that will be released with that iteration of SUSe.
About a month ago I read about a number of problems with multiple monitor support under 4.4.4. Primarily these issues seemed to be with no more than 2 monitors. The SUSe 11.2 machine here uses KDE 4.3 runs three monitors (Intel core quad, pair of NVidia PCIe graphics cards). I was wondering whether any of the bugs with this type of configuration have been resolved. From what I understood 4.4.4 worked with problems using Twinview but I was not able to find anything that addressed the configuration of having separate X Screens.

Nov 1, 2010I am trying to install an Open GL screen saver "EulerTop-1.2" and I get the following error message when I run configure - "checking for perl /usr/bin/perl checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.2) (library qt-mt) not found. For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log. Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support!" It appears to be installed -

OpenSUSE Install :: Set-up Apache To Support SSL
Mar 1, 2010i try to set-up my apache to support SSL.
the SSL conf file under '/etc/apache2/vhosts.d/mySSL.conf' will run if i restart (/etc/init.d/apache2 restart) apache through the terminal.
but if i restart apache/HTTP Server in YaST, my conf file (/etc/apache2/vhosts.d/mySSL.conf) will be deleted and the SSL wont work.
tell me what is happening to the system? coz i use yast primarily than the terminal.
