Ubuntu Installation :: LVM And Software RAID - Moving Data

Jan 4, 2011

I have a Linux installation that currently uses a 40GB hard disk. It is partitioned as follows:

Code:

The disk has recently started to make a lot of noise, so I'd like to replace it before I lose data.

I have a pair of identical 160GB blank hard disks that I would like to use as a software raid1 array (The existing 30-odd GB root partition would be resized to fill the new disks).

How I could get the data on to the new hardware without losing anything?

General :: Moving Data Contained Within Swap To RAM?

Dec 13, 2010

I have 5.8GB of RAM.
I have 6.1GB of swap.

At some point in time my VMs exceeded the 5.8GB limit and overflowed into swap (all dev VMs). I have since shut down the VMs and restarted Firefox (memory hog). Right now I have 0.73GB in RAM and 0.29GB in swap. I want to move all of the data in swap into RAM where it will be faster. So I will end up with 1.02GB in RAM and 0GB in swap. Is there a quick command to move data contained within swap to RAM? I know of the swapon/swapoff command. I was wondering if there was another method which clears swap.

General :: Moving User Account To New Install?

May 17, 2010

plans to upgrade my "production" desktop from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 LTS. Based on what I have read and experienced with "upgrades" it is better to install the new version from scratch. That is what I plan to do. The next task is to install the various additional programs I wish to have. I can make a list of them and do the installs no problem.

So now I get to the question of my user account information. I have my current system built with the following file systems:

/ (for the OS)
/home (for my account)
/data (for all "data" including Firefox and Thunderbird profiles, OpenOffice.org documents and other data files)

Moving my "data" to the new OS will not be an issue. My user account information is stored in /home/ken. Can this be moved to the new OS? I would like to avoid having to redo gnome and program preferences and configurations, icons on the panel, saved passwords, ssh bookmarks and other stuff which Linux has stored in /home/ken.

I have created an Ubuntu virtual machine and tried a couple of approaches to transferring the files under /home/ken. The results were not promising. Is moving my profile a practical idea or should I just take a couple of hours and tweak everything on the new OS to my liking?

p.s. If I rebuild my profile are there any things I can do to make it "portable" in the future? For when I move to 12.04 LTS?

General :: Moving Data From Computer To Windows Computer

Jun 28, 2011

I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network. My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

Ubuntu Servers :: Www-data Run Process As Different User?

Jun 23, 2010

forums so I'm not sure this is the right place for this topic. So, my question/topic thing is:I have a PHP script that runs on an apache2 web server (www-data).From this script, i want to launch a process that stays alive all the time,ut the parent script keeps on going. So I think I will need to run a command like 'at' to put the process on a queue, and the script can continue and finish, without waiting for the process to stop. But it seems like I will need to run the 'at' command as a different user, because www-data stops the 'atd' process. I'm not sure about that. Does anybody know how this could happen?

Ubuntu Networking :: Restarting DHCP With Www-data User?

Jul 21, 2011

I'm attempting to write a web service that works only on my LAN and is not accessible via the internet. I need to restart the DHCP service without granting full root access, but I'm having trouble using the [/etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart] command. It gives back a failure message that reports nothing:

$ /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart
dhcpd self-test failed. Please fix the config file.
The error was:
$

Looking at the script itself, I found the command its trying to execute, and it came back with this:

$ /usr/sbin/dhcpd3 -t -cf /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf
drop_privileges: could not set group id: Operation not permitted

So I went and changed the dhcp: and dhcpd: AND www-data: in /etc/group so that www-data (The apache user) was part of the group, and still the init.d script wouldn't run.

I would prefer to NOT give passwordless access to the www-data user as I do other web services on this machine, however, giving access to stop my DHCP server is a risk I'm willing to take.

how can I restart the DHCP with apache so I can apply changes?

Ubuntu Security :: Get Data From Another User's Home Directory?

She has a folder which was copied from a windows formatted external hard drive (Probably NTFS) onto her home partition on my machine.

I can open all of her files, except for those in this folder.

As I see it the problem is either something to do with the permissions of the files (coming from NTFS), or some kind of Ubuntu security that I am unaware of?

Here are my attempts to open it code...

Ubuntu :: Backup Software That Backs Up Applications And User Data?

Oct 12, 2010

I have searched and searched for answers to this question, but I can't find what I'm searching for anywhere. At least with the search terms I'm using. So, my question is, is there a backup software for Linux that backs up not only a user's home folder, etc, but also the user's applications, and its associated data.

I am about to upgrade my mother's computer to Lucid, but I don't want to do that until I can find a backup solution that will ensure she doesn't lose any of her application data. She has a lot of apps on her netbook, so just finding out where each individual app stores its data and backing it up is kind of out of the question. Unless every app that the end-user uses (that isn't run as root, obviously) stores its data in the home folder, then it would be easier.Honestly, I use a Mac and I guess I'm just used to the simplicity of Time Machine, which certainly backs up applications, application data, user data, and even extra executables in all the /bin folders (which Macs don't typically use to store most applications). I've heard TimeVault is like Time Machine, but when I tried to use it on her computer, it wouldn't work because it wasn't compatible with the version of Ubuntu that was (and still is) on her computer.

Ubuntu Servers :: Changing User From Www-data To Asterisk Broke Zarafa?

Jun 6, 2010

I currently have Zarafa and I am going to install MythWeb for MythTV.To solve the permission problem for installing amportal (FreePBX), I have to change Apache's user and group to Asterisk instead of this, which I've commented out:User ${APACHE_RUN_USER}Group ${APACHE_RUN_GROUP}Once FreePBX is installed completely, I checked to make sure FreePBX is working and it worked. I used the latest version of Asterisk from the SVN trunk, so I used ./install_amp --my-svn-is-correct.However, I want to use Zarafa AND FreePBX, I just don't like having to change the Apache User and Group to asterisk. Here is a couple of examples of instructions when installing FreePBX:Is there a workaround? I really want to change it back to what it was before while FreePBX can still access their own directories.

I did not know if this question has been asked, but I thought I'd ask here. I've added "zarafa" and "mythweb" to the tags list my thread.Update: I changed my apache configuration file back to www-data for User and Group and I do have /var/lib/asterisk/agi-bin and /var/www/asterisk (where FreePBX PHP pages are installed in /var/www/asterisk) owned by asterisk:asterisk. But I get this:

Code:
Retrieve conf failed to copy file(s) from a module's agi-bin dir: copy(/var/lib/asterisk/agi-bin/directory): failed to open stream: Permission denied

Software :: Acct Sa Only Shows Only Root No User Data?

Feb 21, 2010

I just did a clean install of suse 11.2. I then installed acct, using yast2.Finally I did:sudo /sbin/chkconfig psacct onsudo /etc/init.d/psacct startSo far so good. The problem is that if I now do:sudo /usr/sbin/sa I only see root processes. None of the user processes seem to show up. If I run it with -m flag, I just see a total and a root row, no users show up at all. But I do have user accounts on the machine, and I am working in one of them (only root when necessary).Any ideas why, or what to do about it? Is there something else that has to be configured? As I understand it, sa -m should show a summary for all users, not just for root.I want to be able to see how much time different users are using.

OpenSUSE :: How To Save (backup) User Application Settings And Data?

Feb 10, 2010

I managed to damage my 11.2 installation so it starts in the GUI mode only in failsafe mode. Actually I tried before to repair the installation, using the install DVD, but the automatic repair procedure failed. More than that, since then boot loader also seams to be "repaired" so that the Windows installation doesn't appear in the boot menu, but this is another thing. For me, now, the fastest way to get a stable system is to make a new installation. The biggest problem is that I cannot save/backup the emails and accounts settings in an elegant way. I'm using Thunderbird. Of course I would also like to save other apps settings. So is there a way to save user application settings so that I can used them after a new install? I had a look to the yast backup tool but these seams to be a way to archive files, or am I wrong?
