OpenSUSE :: How To Save (backup) User Application Settings And Data?

Feb 10, 2010

I managed to damage my 11.2 installation so it starts in the GUI mode only in failsafe mode. Actually I tried before to repair the installation, using the install DVD, but the automatic repair procedure failed. More than that, since then boot loader also seams to be "repaired" so that the Windows installation doesn't appear in the boot menu, but this is another thing. For me, now, the fastest way to get a stable system is to make a new installation. The biggest problem is that I cannot save/backup the emails and accounts settings in an elegant way. I'm using Thunderbird. Of course I would also like to save other apps settings. So is there a way to save user application settings so that I can used them after a new install? I had a look to the yast backup tool but these seams to be a way to archive files, or am I wrong?

Ubuntu :: Backup Software That Backs Up Applications And User Data?

Oct 12, 2010

I have searched and searched for answers to this question, but I can't find what I'm searching for anywhere. At least with the search terms I'm using. So, my question is, is there a backup software for Linux that backs up not only a user's home folder, etc, but also the user's applications, and its associated data.

I am about to upgrade my mother's computer to Lucid, but I don't want to do that until I can find a backup solution that will ensure she doesn't lose any of her application data. She has a lot of apps on her netbook, so just finding out where each individual app stores its data and backing it up is kind of out of the question. Unless every app that the end-user uses (that isn't run as root, obviously) stores its data in the home folder, then it would be easier.Honestly, I use a Mac and I guess I'm just used to the simplicity of Time Machine, which certainly backs up applications, application data, user data, and even extra executables in all the /bin folders (which Macs don't typically use to store most applications). I've heard TimeVault is like Time Machine, but when I tried to use it on her computer, it wouldn't work because it wasn't compatible with the version of Ubuntu that was (and still is) on her computer.

OpenSUSE :: CompizConfig Settings Manager Won't Save Anything

By default nothing is ticked but I think there are some effects already enabled on my system.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Save Display Settings - 2 Screens?

Oct 6, 2010

I have seen posts on the fact that dual screen configuration seem to be a nightmare with opensuse 11.3. As a few already mentioned, it worked all fine with 11.2 and now we are back to. I have two screens attached to my laptop: the standard LVDS and one HDMI high res monitor. It works fine to configure it once but it is NEVER SAVED so I have to do this at EVERY boot. Even more annoying: when the slid is closed, my laptop goes into "no display mode" (black screens) and when it tries to come back to life (opening the lid again) everything is screwed (to use a nice word).

OpenSUSE :: Way To Backup With A GUI Application ?

Mar 30, 2011

In openSuse.. the practical way to backup with a GUI application.

a) Scenario: GRUB crashes or is modified/deleted.. (Obviously not due to ME... I'm and expert even though I just installed OpenSuse 11.4.... about 10 seconds ago..... if you know what I mean).

b) Scenario: Installed/Updated SOMETHING and everything went weird.. (can't boot, nothing runs, KDE/GNOME is dead, end up at a command prompt but I don't know any commands!!!)

Now I had an excellent OpenSuse running..... WHAT do I download to backup, WHAT do I back up so I can do a FRESH Operating System install (SuSe) and restore the rest (or most of it).

SO:
1: What's a good GUI tool?
2: What Folders and Files/Directories do you backup to get back running ASAP?

OpenSUSE :: Application To Backup Root Partition Prior To Tumbleweed

Mar 21, 2011

On my main work machine I have openSUSE 11.4 standard KDE on two partitions, standard root and standard /home. I'm going to add the Tumbleweed repos and follow the evolution of openSUSE until 11.5/12.0 is released.

But I cannot afford to have my main work machine off the air. So I want to back up the root parttiion each time I go a major upgrade from the Tumbleweed repos.

So I thought I would just image the root partition in compressed/reduced form to a USB drive prior to updating.

First I looked at Partimage but it doesn't do the EXT4 filesystem.

Second I thought about Clonezilla but it doesn't allow compression (it states that the target for the image must be at least as big as the source partition); thus DD is just as limited.

Third I looked at the System backup and restore facility in Yast but it seems to be undocumented (i.e. I can't find it.)

Then I thought why not just use cp because the root filesystem of 11.4 for me is only occupying 6Gb ATM. I propose to use "cp -a -u -v" from a live CD to copy the root files to a USB drive with an EXT4 partition.

So two questions:is there a flaw in backing up the system/root with "cp -a -u -v"
is there a better imaging software for a small job like this
