use fedora system, and installed fedora 12 on my usb disk by live-usb creator.Now, the problem is everytime i reboot the computer, the user data and software i installed will disappear.When installing, i choose persistent space which is described for user data and software, but it seems not work now.What can i do if i want my fedora on usb disk is just like the system installed on hard disk
View 1 RepliesI managed to damage my 11.2 installation so it starts in the GUI mode only in failsafe mode. Actually I tried before to repair the installation, using the install DVD, but the automatic repair procedure failed. More than that, since then boot loader also seams to be "repaired" so that the Windows installation doesn't appear in the boot menu, but this is another thing.For me, now, the fastest way to get a stable system is to make a new installation. The biggest problem is that I cannot save/backup the emails and accounts settings in an elegant way. I'm using Thunderbird. Of course I would also like to save other apps settings.So is there a way to save user application settings so that I can used them after a new install? I had a look to the yast backup tool but these seams to be a way to archive files, or am I wrong?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI change the audio channels to 6 in alsamixer by choosing my sound card and change the channels to '6ch'. But this setting is not preserved. I see that after a reboot the channels are again going back to 2ch. I have to manually change everytime to 6ch after each reboot. Is there a way to save the setting in alsamixer so that I will get 6ch everytime after reboot? I am not sure I have explained my problem in a way so that you can understand.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI want to buy another laptop. I want to use FC on it. I need bluray because I want to save data on bluray disks of 25 gb (better than dvds, more space). I have one option, a fujitsu that has bluray writer, big display (I have another one, other model, same size and it's working fine with Fc14, only some small issues).
Second option is a Dell (I had an older dell inspiron before, which worked fine with FC), more expensive, lacking a writer, but it can read bluray. If I take this, I would have to also buy an external bluray writer. Has nice specs, but I am really worried about the graphic card, whether I can make it work with Fc14. I saw some people having problems with linux and this graphic card, while searching on google.
Here's specs for both (sorry for the language from website, but I found in English other specs than these, I guess the specs can be read easily): Dell XPS L702x and FUJITSU Lifebook NH570 I am inclining more towards the Fujitsu, but haven't decided yet.
I already have XP, I installed Fedora to a partition on another hard disk to make it dual OS. During installation, I choose XP for default OS in boot loader. Now the problem it only reboot into XP, I am not able to choose which OS boot.

The "other" is vista. I am wondering if this is OK or whether I have two fedora. If so i would like to remove one of them to save disk space.
I just got an update that installed, and after a reboot I've got one core at 100%. The "you need to restart" icon in the notification tray said "glibc glibc glibc glibc nscd". Now that I look at it, It's switching between both cored. This behavior is consistent over multiple full reboots as well as kexec reboots.
Edit: Strange, just when I finished, the CPU load settled out and now everything is fine. I wonder what was going on. I'm rebooting right now to double check. Edit2: Yep, same issue 100% usage on one core. And it probably will level out soon. I'm not sure what could be causing this. I assume that glibc could be the issue.
I have a laptop, installed with window XP. I just installed Fedora Core, re-formatted all parition on the system, and installed default packages. The installation was successful. But after I took out the installation CD and reboot the system, chose Fedora core (the only banner), the screen just become green, and nothing else from there.
The only thing I am not 100% sure is, during the installation, my monitor was probed as unrecognized. I have tried both 'go with default' and specify one "LCD 1024x...", but either way, after the installation, system won't reboot.
I recently downloaded grub2 source code for my F13 installation and it compiled and installed perfectly, but when I rebooted nothing had happened and grub was still version .97. Is there something I didn't do?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a 500GB Hitachi external hard drive that I use for backup. It's about 17 months old and has barely been used. Two partitions reside on it: a 446.2GB ext4 partition I use for backup and an LVM partition that contains an NTFS partition and another ext4 partition.
I started it and connected it to my laptop today (after not using for 4 months). A libnotify message warned that "drive failure [was] expected in less than 24 hours." Palimpset shows "Reallocated Sector Count" with status "FAILING" and value "343 sectors" and "Current Pending Sector Count" with value "1556" and status "FAILING". At first I figured it was just the self-check being programmed for NTFS only (not unheard of). But then I saw that Palimpset has the Linux partition labelled as "unrecognized". The temperature is normal (about 20�C). What's going on here?I have not mounted the drive yet and the data is largely unimportant, so I'm more concerned about the hardware (even though hardware damage seems the unlikely possibility). To prevent or minimize hardware damage, what would my best course of action be?

I am student of MCS and working on final project. I am the user of windows xp. I am new in Linux. I am working on a project that titles "Hard disk data Recovery of ext2 and ext3 in linux". In windows, including dos.h and bios.h header files in program of c language I can send interrupt to bios and access most of the devices like parallel port, hard disks etc. But problem is that there is no bios.h and dos.h files in gcc. Now how can I access my hard drive using c program. How can I call int13h interrupt in linux or there is any other function in the linux to access the hard disk. In fact I want to access sectors of my hard disk using c language program. How can I do it?

I am investigating full disk encryption and have made a DD copy of the hard drive which has been encrypted, this DD file is stored on my computer for analysis.
First question is - Anyone know how i can access data in this DD file even though its been encrypted?
Second question - Is there a DD command where i can image the systems memory? I ask this because when a system is turned on, to get past the pre-boot authentication stage you need a password. From what i understand, this password will be passed in to ram when power is applied to the system. Making a copy of the memory will also copy the password?
So I have a fresh updated install of 10.10 on dell dimension 4550
The pc connects to my monitor through a dlink KVM switch so I can switch back and forth between computers.
When I reboot my monitor settings disapear and everything is real real large.
If i disconnect from the KVM and connect Ubuntu directly to the monitor and detect monitor it will allow me to adjust settings so everything looks normal. Until I reboot and I am back to the same huge icons again. If I try to go back and adjust monitor settings there are only 2 settings options because it does not see my monitor through the kvm switch again.
Last time I installed Ubuntu in a dualboot configuration with Win7 on one of my machines, my entire boot sector and Windows install got corrupted, resulting in a complete loss of all my data and requiring a fresh install of Windows.
I looked into this a bit after the fact, and it seemed to me it was due to conflicting hard disk geometry between Linux and Windows.
My question is, how likely is this to happen with Fedora? Is this because of Ubuntu? A bad install? Is there someway I can avoid this from happening when I install Fedora if it will happen?
There is a disk 500 gb, it is broken on /boot and on /root and on /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. Whether prompt it is possible to redistribute a disk without loss of data namely it is necessary to make/boot and two equivalent on disk volume.

fdisk �l give partitions, but mount does not work. Crashed system should be on sda1 and it is ext4. code...
