Ubuntu :: Uninstall Software And Remove User Data?
Jan 12, 2011
I was making some tests and I could see that ubuntu software management systems doesn't delete user data when uninstalling applications, only the binary packages.
e.g. reinstalling Thunderbird won't delete the email accounts info.
I have been trying to remove Platinum arts sandbox game making program for a while now. I have tried using the terminal command: sudo apt-get remove dpkg
But I keep getting an error message:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock -open (11: resource Temporarily Disable) E: Unable to unlock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
Then I typed: /var/lib/dpkg/lock -open
Then I got the following message:
bash: /var/lib/dpkg/lock: permission denied
What does all of this mean? How come this file is locked and requires admin permission?
ok, so i was installing kget and i accedently turned off my computer while it was installing, kget is for KDE and since ubuntu uses gnome, it has to install the packages to make it work, one of which is kdebase-runtime-dataI cannot uninstall it through synaptic or terminal, i didnt uninstall kget, and thats the only KDE based app i have i thinkI cannot install any apps because it is tring to remove kdebase-runtime-data even if i dont select it, its like always selected for removal and i cant uncheck itI am running ubuntu 9.10 with the 2.6.31-22-generic kernelHere is the output from terminal

I'm trying to remove brscan that I had installed for my old scanner , but I get this message , any ideas how to remove brscan ? I tried the package manager, now it is stuck , I can't uncheck it ,can't reinstall it , can't install anything else because of this
Well, earlier today I installed 'conky-all' and now I can't seem to remove it. To install it, I used:
Code: sudo apt-get install conky-all
I then used a conkyrc that I found on an internet tutorial. It seemed to run okay but it was very ugly so I tweaked a few variables. However, after doing so, I couldn't get conky to work again. So, just to see if it was the variables that I set which could have broke it, I changed the conkyrc file back to that ugly one which worked before. I then tried to run conky again and this time it didn't work either.
I then decided to remove conky in an effort to reinstall the conky, this time just conky as opposed to conky-all. I used:
Code: sudo apt-get remove conky-all Thinking that I had successfully removed conky, I did another apt-get to install conky. When I couldn;t get that one to work, I tried to remove it. However, this time I decided to check and see if it was actually removed, by using:
When Ubuntu Software Centre removes software, it leaves files behind in File System which is owned by Root preventing me from deleting them.
1. Could this be why Update Manager is insisting that I install updates for software that I have removed and do not use?
2. There is one application I would like to re-install because it asked me technical questions before I installed it. I think I gave the wrong answer and when I re-installed it, it didn't ask the question again. It seems likely that there is a file somewhere that Ubuntu Software Centre didn't remove, and I could do with deleting but is owned by Root. How do I do this?
3. Should I have posted this query under 'Absolute Beginner Talk?'. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx.
as much as i am one for saving space and throwing out the trash. now my problem is the fact that I DO NOT WANT THIS program (localepurge) running on my system. i look and did everything i could. note : i am a noobie. when i config the program from the start i told it NO don't delete anything. and now that i have done some reading i do not want it working period. i could not find a way to disable or uninstall localepurge.
There's a single command to achieve this result? I want those (never and not willing to use in future) features to be completly remove from all my systems (*buntu).
Prefered command like sudo apt-get autoremove and avoid "clicking/settting throug various menu" Battery level indicator prefereably kept
I am trying to streamline a desktop install into a more streamlined server-esk install. I have edited the inittab to change the runlevel at startup to 3. How do I now remove KDE completely? Also are there any other large programs I need to uninstall?
Take a physical user FRED. FRED is a linux user ( known by linux on his laptop ) FRED is a Samba user ( Known by samba on the samba pdc server ) When he logs locally (with username/password) on its standalone laptop (with no network), he is known as FRED:user. He access his data in /home/FRED/. When he logs through samba (with username/password) on the domain MY_DOM, he is known as MY_DOMFRED:MY_DOMdomain user. He access his data in /home/MY_DOM/FRED/. ) Is it possible that the human FRED has only one repository and have full access to its repository regardless of how it was connected. If yes, how to do it
2) If not, Is it possible that the human FRED has full access to /home/FRED/.............. and /home/MY_DOM/FRED/.
When I tried to uninstall some applications, pidgin, for example, via 'Add/Remove Software', YaST told me that I have to uninstall another 200+ packages. Is this something normal? I'm new to Linux and don't want ruin the system, so I seek for another way.
I found that 'Software Manager' can also be used to uninstall the package, so I use it to uninstall pidgin. The problem is after I pressed 'Apply' button, there are so many package installing by themselves. I saw that most of them are appended with '-lang'.
How To: Uninstall/Remove Old Wireless Driver to make way for New Driver (RTL8191SE)?
Here's the new driver:
I have been having trouble with my wireless connection intermittently disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly (sometimes every couple of seconds). I posted a thread about this here on Ubuntu Forums titled: Ubuntu 10.45 & NetworkManager Applet 8.0: Connects & Disconnects Frequently.
[URL]You show how to remove a package and it's dependencies. You show how to remove the configuration from the package you are currently uninstalling. You don't show how to remove the configuration data from a package and all of it's dependencies. Why?
I would like to remove openSUSE (11.3) from my dual boot (/Windows) system. In the old days, the install CD used to have an option for that, but now my DVD doesn't have anything, or perhaps I overlooked?

I was wondering if there is a program or just a simple copy and paste from somewhere that will allow me to move my favorites and other data from my opera on xp.
forums so I'm not sure this is the right place for this topic. So, my question/topic thing is:I have a PHP script that runs on an apache2 web server (www-data).From this script, i want to launch a process that stays alive all the time,ut the parent script keeps on going. So I think I will need to run a command like 'at' to put the process on a queue, and the script can continue and finish, without waiting for the process to stop. But it seems like I will need to run the 'at' command as a different user, because www-data stops the 'atd' process. I'm not sure about that. Does anybody know how this could happen?
How can I transfer data from one user account to the other? I wish to delete one of the accounts but before that I want to transfer all the data in that account to the other account so that my data is saved.
I have some developers with Desktop User accounts. How can I allow them to delete files owned by www-data which are created under their accounts (/home/username/public_html) by PHP scripts they are coding and testing.I tried to edit www-data user group and add the user as a member of it but this has no effect - the user still unable to delete these files only by creating another PHP script!
I'm attempting to write a web service that works only on my LAN and is not accessible via the internet. I need to restart the DHCP service without granting full root access, but I'm having trouble using the [/etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart] command. It gives back a failure message that reports nothing:
$ /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart dhcpd self-test failed. Please fix the config file. The error was: $
Looking at the script itself, I found the command its trying to execute, and it came back with this:
$ /usr/sbin/dhcpd3 -t -cf /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf drop_privileges: could not set group id: Operation not permitted
So I went and changed the dhcp: and dhcpd: AND www-data: in /etc/group so that www-data (The apache user) was part of the group, and still the init.d script wouldn't run.
I would prefer to NOT give passwordless access to the www-data user as I do other web services on this machine, however, giving access to stop my DHCP server is a risk I'm willing to take.
how can I restart the DHCP with apache so I can apply changes?
I had a student, and she has done some work on her account on my lab computer, but has left the country and is un-contactable.
I have full administrator privileges for this machine, and it is running Ubuntu LTS 10.04
She has a folder which was copied from a windows formatted external hard drive (Probably NTFS) onto her home partition on my machine.
I can open all of her files, except for those in this folder.
As I see it the problem is either something to do with the permissions of the files (coming from NTFS), or some kind of Ubuntu security that I am unaware of?
I want to know if there is any way that one could remove the user list from the login screen requiring the user to type in their user name. I am not quite sure why this feature is not implemented and it is one of the very few things I don't like about Lucid but hopefully there is a fix for it.
In Ubuntu 9.10 I was able to remove the user list from gdm. However in 10.04 I am unable to do this. I searched the forums with no luck. I opened gconf-editor using sudo and went to apps>gdm>simple-greeter. I then checked disable_user_list. After complete shutdown, I was still placed in the list screen. I checked gconf-editor and the disable_user_list was still checked.
