Sep 5, 2010I have recently set up an ubuntu installation on an old PC. After some fiddling with both it, and the windows 7 machine, I have managed to share all of my drives. However, when attempting to access them from ubuntu, only 2 of the 4 hard disk shares will mount, with the other 2 failing with a Unable to mount location, failed to mount windows share error message.

May 25, 2010I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. On the windows pc I am trying to share with I get, "Windows cannot acces \Josh-Desktop

That folders I cannot access are Music and Videos.

Aug 5, 2010I have 2 internal drives. One is for the OS and one is for the Data. I tried to get the Data drive to mount automatically at login using some crap I found on a linux blog. Safe to say it didn't work and now I can't mount it with the OS on the OS Drive.
It mounts from a live CD and all the data is perfectly safe. When I try to mount the drive I get this error message: "Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/data" What have I done wrong and how can I make it mount again? Preferably this time at login.

And when I boot my pc with 'Windows', it said : "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" under a blue screen. What can I do to solve this problem?

I am attempting to share other folders within the shared folders to another user as read only but have not had any success. When I attempt to connect to one of the shares from another computer running Ubuntu 10.10, logged into an Administrator account with the same username and password which I setup on the Samba share I get the error: "Unable to mount location" "Failed to mount Windows share"

Jan 22, 2011I have installed ubuntu 10.10 and the Samba addon to configure my shares to my Windows terminals.This is what I got
Firewall off (utf disabled)
Internal Sata /dev/sda1 (EXT4 FS)
External USB HDD /dev/sdb1 mounted at /media/SG1500GB (EXT4 FS)
I have two shares
1. //home/test - Which I can see and access with no problems (can't write to it though even though I set the share as writable?, but, I can read from it). This is available to everyone. My windows terminal can see this folder and access it. This is on my main 80GB internal drive /dev/sda1.
2. //media/SG1500GB/Music. I set this up for everyone full access and I can see it at all my Windows machines but,I can't get into the folder. Windows keeps giving me an error stating network path not found.I also try to access it via the Nautilus (Places/Network/system/music) and get an error message "unable to mount location, Failed to mount windows share". This drive is mounted per the disk utility.

Jul 26, 2010I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 running Ubuntu v10.04 with a wireless card.My desktop is a Dell Optiflex running WinXP.The desktop is connected via ethernet cable to a Linksys wireless router. Certain folders on the desktop are set for sharing. Up until early last week I was able to access the desktop folders from the laptop with no issues.Suddenly I am now getting this error "Unable to mount location Failed to mount Windows share" whenever I try to access the desktop folders from the laptop.I suspect an upgrade is the culprit, but not sure.

Mar 21, 2010i'm trying to connect to the three other machines in my house but am having quite a hard time doing so. i've never had a problem in the past with ubuntu, but, with 9.1 and windows 7, things have gotten a bit harder. i'm running 9.1 and my roommates are running windows 7. i've installed, set up and configured samba and i can see the computers on my network, but any time i try to access either of the drives, it says unable to mount location: failed to mount windows share.

The system is fat 32 now but with same message, not including ext4 part. Just the mount point message, and something about dosftools and mtools, wihich also are installed.

For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.
This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent. Sometimes Debian mounts devices to mount points based on the volume names, and other times it gives them generic mount points (e.g. /media/usb1).

I have two external USB drives, that I need to mount at boot. I have been using /etc/fstab up until now, with the following entries:

However, as I gather from doing searches is quite common, occasionally I get an error during boot (causing the system to drop to a recovery shell) because the USB drives take time to wake up and the system hasn't found them by the time it reads /etc/fstab.
From doing searches, it seems there is nothing you can do to fstab to fix this, so you need to mount them using an rc.local script instead, using:

The problem is, as I have two USB drives, their /dev/sdxx location changes between boots. I thus want to use UUID codes as I do in fstab, however I haven't found anything about this.
Does anyone know how I can use the mount command and UUID to mount a drive in rc.local and what options I have to use the mount the drive with the same options that I am using in my fstab entry? Obvisouly, I can't refer back to fstab using the mount command, because then I will still get the boot error issue if they are listed in fstab. And there is no space internally for the USB drives as there is already two internal drives.
Server :: Auto Mount USB Drive To Specified Mount Point After Reboot
Jul 19, 2010I have servers installed with RHEL 4 2.6.9-89.0.9 ELsmp. I tried using uuid and label in /etc/fstab to automount usb drives to mountpoints that I specify after reboot. Unfortunately, it just does not work in all my RHEL4 servers. After every reboot, /etc/fstab will be automatically modified and all configurations related to my USB drives will be changed. Irregardless of whether i use UUID or LABEL in my /etc/fstab.However, it works on RHEL5. But, upgrading is not an option in my environment. I have been googling around looking for alternatives but everything seems to point back to using UUID or LABEL in /etc/fstab. Anyone has tried something that works? Please help me, thank you.

Sep 24, 2015I can't mount it, and also since apparently debian doesn't care about the nasty systemd but I had to deal with that but I digress.
I cannot mount my itnernal drive, and even memory cards are listed as "permission denied" even though I am part of the disks group. I know that before systemd I could just edit a udisks config file but I cannot find out where it'd even be.
I've included my /etc/fstab.

I am part of the disks group, and am 90% sure that I edited the udisks file that says something about mount internal disk to allow active from allow_admin
The only udev rules that i've changed was the one to change the mount point for external drives to /media/drive_label instead of /media/$username/drive_label
Basically I'm trying to automount the partition after clicking on it in the file manager.

I would prefer not to format via GUI .... 1st because I have data there , 2nd, because I don't want to rely on a graphical interface but being able to fix this via terminal.

Sep 1, 2011I am working on an old PC and I am trying to mount a floppy disk. The disk is formatted as Fat12 with Quote: mkdosfs -F 12 /dev/fd0 Weather it auto mounts or I mount it with sudo mount Quote: /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0
it says it works fine, but if I add files to it,remove the disk and put it in another machine nothing is on the disk. The files I add to the disk just get added to /media/floppy0 as a normal directory. If I try to umount /dev/fd0 it says the device is not mounted, even directly after I mount it.

It says I am unable to mount. The only way to get one to work is put one in wait tell it says it is unable to mount then put the second one in. At that point I am able to look at the second drive.
