Ubuntu :: Maverick Fails To Load Grahical Display After NV Driver Deactivated / Solve It?

Nov 11, 2010

I am able to login to the system. code...

Are there any logs that you would like me to post?

I have tried reinstalling the NV display driver via "additional drivers" in the live CD, but they do not appear to be being retained on the HD version of Ubuntu. When I go back into the live cd the driver is not installed.

How can I switch the proprietary driver back on in the hard disk when I am running the live disk.

Is there a repair system program?

If not is there a way of forcing an upgrade on an upgraded system so that missing files are reinstalled?

If that does not work what should I do next to get the GDM to load?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Nvidia Driver Fails To Load In Kernels 2.6.32-23 And Later

Dec 6, 2010

I've been using kubuntu for a while, and I've been having this issue since the release of the 2.6.32-23 kernel. Originally, I thought it was related to my raid array and this bug: [URL] I'm still not convinced they're not related, but there is also apparently the possiblity of an nvidia driver issue. Previously, I rebooted infrequently, and I had a spare hard drive installed, so my grub menu would always appear (as it detected an alternate OS on this drive) and it was trivial to select the 2.6.32-22 kernel. Since I installed all updates, including the -35 kernel, it ran update-grub and now I have to press shift when I reboot. Specs/Summary:

Kubuntu 10.04
amd64.
nvidia driver 195.36.24
RAID 1 (linux software raid)
kernels installed: 2.6.32-21 - 2.6.32.25

when I boot with -22 or earlier, everything works great. when I boot with -23 or later, I get the kubuntu splash screen, followed by it switching to tty2, then I get it switched back to where the X screen should be, with the system log displayed, and then it switches back to tty2. After installing -35, I panicked a bit as I'd never had the grub screen not show (not knowing about the shift key), and so I poked around logs and it showed nvidia driver errors. I tried removing my xorg.conf file and rebooted, and I got the desktop to show again. I prefer the nvidia driver as I sometimes use dual monitors.

CentOS 5 Networking :: R8168 Driver Fails To Load

Sep 25, 2010

I have a:

# lspci | grep Ether
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 03)

Looks like the r8169 module that gets loaded is not a valid choice for this chipset. The main error that I see is:

r8169: eth0: link down
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

I have verified the cable and it's good the windows machine next door is fine using it without packet loss.

The system is a HP Desktop, just CentOS 5.5 loaded on it (base, with no updates).

Ubuntu :: X Fails To Load With Nvidia Driver: "screen(s) Found But None Have A Usable Config"

May 8, 2010

My system is a Lenovo B500 All-In-One, with an Nvidia GTS 250M video card. nv seems to work okay, but I cannot get the desktop to load with the nvidia driver (nvidia-current, from the repository). I've been hacking away at this for a week and a half with no results. Every time I try to boot with the nvidia driver, the splash screen comes up for a second, the screen flashes a couple times between a "static" screen and tty2, then the screen seems to go to a test mode, where it flashes a series of solid colors indefinitely. Looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I see the following:

I am a newbie to Ubuntu and I am having problem with loading Gnome and startx. I have ubuntu 9.1 installed on my Dell Inspiron E1505 system. The problem started when gnome-power-manager started giving error regarding configuration settings not installed properly. I tried to google it and after lot of searching I figured out that my root directory is almost full. Moving some folders helped me solve the problem. But in the meantime I think I have screwed up some where. Now my Gnome or startx wouldnt load. Ubuntu logins my user profile and after that just sits that with the cursor revolving. When I press ctrl+Alt+F1 it gives no errors. Then I stop gdm by code...

Ubuntu :: (Maverick, 64-bit) Won't Load At All

So I upgraded to Natty, didn't like it and decided to go back to Maverick. Got out my trusty Live CD and reinstalled, no problem. Unfortunately now it just takes me to the screen with the list of possible OSes to start, and when I press enter it says:

Code:

I don't appear to be able to do anything from there. I've had so much trouble with this blinking computer lately that I'm even considering going back to Windows.

Ubuntu :: Maverick Fails To Suspend To Ram?

Dec 8, 2010

Maverick (64 bit) will suspend to RAM on my desktop computer immediately after I boot it up (before I start working). But after I have some programs open, it always fails to suspend. I get the typical blinking cursor in the upper right corner of a black screen. Then, after 20 seconds, the screen comes back on. The logs contain a message that "Freezing of tasks failed after 20.01 seconds." The problem task is usually listed as gnome-panel. Sometimes other tasks are listed too (such as Nautilus). Why will gnome-panel allow me to suspend soon after booting up, but not allow suspend after I start working with applications? I am not changing anything in the panel. And deleting the applets I have installed (system monitor and hardware monitor) doesn't make any difference - the problem continues. As I said, sometimes Nautilus is listed as the task that refuses to freeze.

If I switch users, I can suspend. I assume switching users just puts me in the "clean" state I have with my own user after booting up, so this doesn't really tell me anything new. I have searched all the other threads I can find. Most of the extensive suspend debugging threads are either from the 2007 era or they deal with laptops or resume issues. My issue is failure to suspend on a desktop. As you can see from the logs, I've been working on this for a month already!

Here's a typical error message:

Nov 7 01:52:59 MyComputer kernel: [ 1625.221296] Freezing of tasks failed after 20.01 seconds (1 tasks refusing to freeze):
Nov 7 01:52:59 MyComputer kernel: [ 1625.221374] gnome-panel D 000000010001fdc2 0 1925 1853 0x00800004

Here's an example log showing 2 tasks that fail to freeze:

Code:

Nov 9 01:25:09 MyComputer kernel: [16615.765114] PM: Syncing filesystems ... done.
Nov 9 01:25:09 MyComputer rtkit-daemon[1738]: The canary thread is apparently starving. Taking action.

Red Hat / Fedora :: RPM Install Script Fails On Root Change / What To Solve It?

Mar 4, 2011

I am working with Rhel 5.5. I am creating rpms and I have an issue. I want to bzip up the file before I make the rpm. Then I want to unzip it at install time. I add the zip up work to the %prep tag and added the unzip to the %prerun tag of the SPEC file. Everything works fine.

Then I install the rpm to a different folder with rpm -i --root /tmp for example and the scripts fail to run because the script can't find /bin/sh.

It makes sense because rpms are dependent on the absolute paths to the file, but I want to know how to still have the scripts run. I tried to put the /bin/sh in the /tmp folder (in the example above) but it still can't find it. And yes i do have /bin/sh on the system.

Ubuntu :: Solve The Wi-Fi Broadcom-driver In 11.04?

Apr 28, 2011

As you might have noticed the new broadcom driver in 11.04 is not working anymore, but you can use the old one from 10.10 if you follow these steps:

1. First you need to download the old broadcom driver (10.10) here:

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...untu5_i386.deb

2. Now it's time to delete the current driver:

open the console:

sudo gedit /var/lib/dpkg/status

search for "bcmwl-kernel-source" and delete the lines that are related to the driver.

3. Install the driver you have downloaded before by double-clicking the .deb file

4. Go to the Synpatic-Package-Manager and search for "bcmwl-kernel-source" again. Click on on it and go to "package" and make sure you lock it, so it won't be updated.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Display On Boot With Maverick 10.10

Oct 11, 2010

I just upgraded my laptop to 10.10 and now when I boot the display doesn't show anything. This laptop worked flawlessly on 10.04. I can tell the underlying system is fine, because if I type my boot password the hard disk activity picks up like it is continuing to boot, and CTRL+ALT+DEL reboots the computer as one would expect. When I boot using an old kernel (a leftover from 10.04 I think) via GRUB the system boots normally. What can I do about this? My laptop is an HP Elitebook 2730p. According to the specs it uses an Intel GMA 4500MHD for graphics. I am using the 64-bit version of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Maverick Freezing With High Load Average

Oct 15, 2010

It's the fourth time now since Maverick that I had to cold reboot my system because it was totally unresponsive. The system monitor in my taskbar shows 100% on the background blue graph (I guess that's just one core then) and almost nothing on the other core. On the last freeze I managed to open 'sudo top' before it went totally unresponsive and saw that there was no high CPU usage at all, but a load average spiking above 24. Also the swap seemed to be full although my machine usually never uses swap. I was watching a movie with VLC this time, but I'm not sure if VLC ran the other times my OS froze. I made a snapshot with my cell phone: [URL]. How I can prevent a process from causing so much load?

Ubuntu :: Maverick - Sometimes Very Slow - Mouse Lags - Low Cpu Load ?

Nov 10, 2010

Since I upgraded to Maverick, every now and then (maybe once an hour) my system becomes very slow for about half a minute. The mouse cursor reacts only very slowly and also applications freeze for for some time.

This happens without the CPU being on full load or the hard disk being active.

I made a clean ubuntu installation on a new hard drive a week ago, but the problem persists.

I have a Thinkpad R400 with an Intel GMA 4500 graphics card an an Intel T5670 Core 2 Duo processor. I'm running the most up to date stable version of ubuntu. Kernel 2.6.35-22.

I know the description of the problem is very vague, but it's hard to describe it more accurately. I couldn't find anything helpful on google or the forum. If you have any ideas what might cause the problem or which log files might provide useful information, please let me know. Most importantly, the problem did not occur before I upgraded to Maverick.

Ubuntu :: 2530 Konica Printing Fails With OpenOffice And Maverick 10.10

Oct 18, 2010

I have a Konica 2530DL colour laser and have used it with versions from 6.06 onwards.

However now, with 10.10 I find I cannot print at from most apps eg OpenOffice or PDFs. I get errors on video frame showing on the printer but nothing obvious on the PC.

Test print and gedit text prints works fine and so does using a VM with Lucid running on the same host prints fine too from anything.

Can't see any other comments about this problem anywhere but I know the printer is fairly common and has worked well with Linux in the past.

Using it with IP printing on port 9100 and allow the installation to detect and select the driver. Not setup anything clever and I have the same issue with a Lucid upgrade to 10.10 or a clean install. However the VM running Lucid prints fine. Must be something changed on Maverick somewhere.

Ubuntu Installation :: Maverick Mysteries - USB Keyboard / Mouse And Display

Nov 8, 2010

I have several machines which have been dual booting Ubuntu and Win for a couple years. Not much problem with setting them up, and Ubuntu has been trouble free. With this Maverick release, however, I've had quite a bit of trouble. Having trouble characterizing the flakiness, but it persists on this machine as follows ...

I did a clean install of the 10/10/10 distribution, dual booting with Win 7. Seemed to install OK and boot up once, although there might have been small problems during install, causing me to start over clean. Machine is relatively new AMD X4 940, with ATI HD 4800 video. The first flaky thing is that Sometimes (>50% of the time) the USB keyboard and/or mouse don't work (locked up). Sometimes one does, but not the other, sometimes neither work. I can't characterize why, but rebooting sometimes fixes it. The Win 7 environment is fine.

The second flaky thing is that after the initial boot to the graphical desktop, more often I boot to the black login screen. By reading this forum, I've found that "sudo service gdm start" usually starts the graphical desktop (although mostly with the mouse and or kbd frozen). This is a clean install, with the proprietary ATI driver added. I am dismayed, because this is so different from my earlier experience with Ubuntu. Don't know if these problems are somehow linked, or quite how to proceeds. Just looking for more stability.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Closed NVIDIA Driver Not Working / Solve This?

If i just activate the Proprietary Nvidia driver and reboot, it will hang after writing "Checking battery State [ok]". I have tried to add EDID from Windows partition, and here it hangs at a blank black/grey screen. I have tried hooking up an external display, no output on it either.
