ok so i have been using rosegarden on lucid/karmic/jaunty
and i never used Jackd since it is to the non-highly-technical a remarkable pain in the butt
i compose entirely through midi and the sound has always played through timidity
see this reading from Lucid
Code:
JackDriver::initialiseAudio - JACK server not running
ALSA Client information:
14,0 - (Midi Through, Midi Through Port-0)(DUPLEX) [ctype 2, ptype 655362, cap 99]
128,0 - (TiMidity, TiMidity port 0)(WRITE ONLY) [ctype 1, ptype 2, cap 66]

How to bond NICs in Ubuntu server 10.04/10.10 correctly.
I installed ifenslave-2.6 on a fresh install. Then I tried going into the /etc/network/interfaces file and adding a new entry for bond0 to the file and adding bond-mode 6, bond-miimon 100 and slaves eth1 eth2 to the end of the bond0 config.
That did not work, it keep telling me it cannot bring up the interface even after a reboot it still does not work.
I also followed some tutorial I found online about editing /etc/modprobe.d/aliases
That did not work really well either, the interface came up but had no slaves.
Can anyone give a clue or a current method to bond interfaces in the 10.04/10.10
I'm trying to setup a server for my home office, But I heard that using Maverick is not for office purpose and asked me to use Lucid instead.Should I download the Lucid version install it or do direct downgrade to Lucid?

View 9 Replies View Relatedthere's a way to update the OS from 10.04 to 10.10 without having to redo my LiveCD or something? Also I was wondering if, in doing this I can save my old ubuntu account with all of the extra apps I downloaded, and my files?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI first noticed the disparity when I was moving some ISO files from Maverick to another partition. It was around 12-15 mb/s, where later I found Lucid to be around 30-50 mb/s.I then dropped into a VT and tried both from there, and discovered Maverick still much slower.thinking it may be the newer Nautilus, I re-booted and telinit 3, first using Maverick then Lucid.Lucid moved several gigabytes of data from one partition to another. It finished in "0m5.290s" where Maverick using the same computer and exact same data, moving to the exact same location "0m8.870s", Maverick being almost 60% slower. Not sure now where to look. Perhaps a newer library, or extra process being in use. Using telinit 3, I never loaded anything else. Is there any tools that can trace the moves.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi have a sony vaio VGN-NW150J laptop that was running lucid and had wireless no problem but when i upgraded to maverick i lost all functionality of my intel 5100 agn wireless card. when i run iwconfig this is what i get
Code:
iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
and on bootup it flashes something about no suitable unicode found i can't get a good look at it maverick boot up too fast.
i had with it was nVidia HDMI playback but that wasnt hard to solve. Ive been using ubuntu since Karmic and except for the HDMI i had no problems. On the 10.10.10 i upgraded to Maverick from the terminal with "do-release-upgrade". I noticed that command while i was at a friends house SSH'ing back home. When i came back i ran the command and took me a few hours to upgrade. And to my suprise i encountered 3 problems (Karmic -> Lucid = Zero)...
1) I cant use a few PPA's at the moment but its livable with.
2) Compiz broken but i can wait. Maybe might compile it myself if i get tired of Metacity.
3) My /home partition got halved. The first 2... Just inconvenience. The 3rd... I got 900GB's allocated to my /home so im missing quite a lot of space. I do remember the system reporting before that i had 900GB's but now it just says 485GB's.Heres what fdisk and df report
Code:
lisiano@Lisiano-Ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda
[sudo] password for lisiano:
Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes[code].....
I did reboot. The Restart Required icon is not lit either.
Is it possible to install the Maverick Meerkat over Lucid Lynx without losing third party programs and Document data on my Laptop?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMentioned post - [URL]... I was/am also having the same problem that was described above and fixed it with either 'nomodeset' or 'i915.modeset=0', however, once I installed Gnome (part of the "Ultimate Server Guide"), I had one of the following happen...
-On Maverick, it would continue to boot in the console and running commands like startx would result in an error (no screen) -On Lucid, it stopped booting into the server all together (even with the above fixes). Once it boots into the server (about 6-7 seconds later), I'll see a bunch of reddish square artifacts on the screen and the HD activity will stop and the screen will remain on, but nothing will be displayed.
I've searched high and low for help on this and nothing seems to fix the problem. I consider myself very technical but my linux experience is only fair/good. Mostly from Unix experience in college and messing around with Ubuntu Desktop on my netbook.
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:E:ErrorpkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused byheld packages. This can be caused by: * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe new NVIDIA drivers don't seem to work as seamlessly as back in Jaunty and before. In Lucid when I activated the drivers I had to do some grub tweaks to make my splash look normal... But with Maverick it is even more messed up...
Problem: The splash either doesn't appear at all (black screen) or it appears in the text format rather than graphics... In some instances it even hopelessly tried to load the graphics splash - loaded the background but the instead of Ubuntu logo and the progress-bar animation it displayed a "Ubuntu 10.10" in a monospace font.
As seen in the screenshot, my update manager won't let me mark the proposed kernel updates for installation.I have heard that I would be able to mark them after a few days have passed ( I don't know the reason, though). Well, now it's been 3 weeks that I have them as "proposed updates" and I still can't mark them.I decided to run apt-get upgrade in the terminal and here is the output:
Code:
~$ sudo apt-get upgrade

I'm looking to install an older kernel in Maverick - something like 2.6.32 maybe? Just wondering if there's a way to do it without compiling myself. I upgraded my system without checking everything. I use it as a MythTV box and the 2.6.35 kernel breaks my remote control in a manner that appears to be unfixable at the moment, if the forums on the problem are right. I figure an older kernel will get me out of the jam, but I'm not sure how to go about it (there aren't any in the standard repos).
View 4 Replies View Relatedwhen i was in office, something funny happened. my laptop power chord seemed to be disconnected and was running on battery power. i was away from desk and by the time i came back, laptop had gone to sleep may b due to battery getting drained.i packed up and came home, plugged in and booted but ubuntu seemed to give lots of erros and didnt boot. i went to my win partition, burnt the iso i had earlier downloaded and kept on win partition for safety. i booted off the cd and issued sudo fsck command from terminal. fsck did its job and gave a clean chit for my dev/sda5 (where ubuntu is).
View 9 Replies View Relatedin maverick the default package installer (when I double click on a .deb) is Ubuntu Software Centre, how can I make the default package installer from lucid (was it called "dpkg"?) the default again? Ubuntu Software Centre is too slow and freezes every time I click on something, can it be replaced?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?
I'd like to install the 2.6.35 kernel while keeping Lucid (just not in the mood right now to get used to a new release). Can someone point me to a tutorial on how to go about this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just run an upgrade and noticed Kernel update 2.6.32-22 for lucid. Anything new in that? Anyone have any details?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been running 64 bit Koala on an HP desktop with 8 GB for a few months. Now that Lucid is out and the kernel has stopped changing every three days, I thought I would do a clean install of 64 bit Lucid. Backed everything up, verified the .iso I downloaded a few days ago and burned a CD, and away we go. Everything seems clean, finds the old /home, asks for a restart. I say go.
Suddenly there are way more options on my grub menu. Every Linux option has an alternate with PAE, and the PAE option is the default boot. I didn't even think about it and let it take the default. The reboot hangs. I had to pull the plug to turn the machine off.
I reboot again with PAE. It hangs again. Pull the plug. Reboot without PAE and I'm golden. Google soon turns up all sorts of old advice to add noapic to the boot parameters on a PAE kernel. Instead I sat back and started thinking.
Am I doing with a kernel marked PAE in the first place? This is a 64 bit install. It doesn't need PAE. I look again at the .iso and it's 64 bit.
Code:
Looks like 64 bit to me.
Why I have PAE options that will not boot?
What is the latest kernel released for lucid? I have linux headers 2.6.32.21 and linux headers 2.6.22.386 but I do not think they are correct.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am looking for an upstream kernel in hope that a few bugs are ironed out in my Lucid Kubuntu install. I tried about 2 weeks ago to get a precompiled kerel from the upstream kernel PPA [URL] but the problem is that it was built with gcc 4.2 and lucid comes with gcc 4.4 a little bit sub-moronic considering that Lucid won't accept modules built with a different compiler. I am also a little sub-moronic as I don't know how to tell if todays kernel is still being built with the 4.2 compiler, I downloaded the build.log file but I can't find any references to gcc 4.2 but as I said when I installed and tried build my Nvidia modules - no dice.
It says it needs either a kernel built with gcc 4.4 or something else. I would rebuild from scratch but I only have 1mb left for the next 10 days then my isp charges me 10c per meg, so I don't want to download the 400mb for the ncurses etc etc (thats the size it told me from aptitude to get just the additional packages and then i would need the kernel source...) They are still using gcc 4.2, and why? Where there is an official prebuilt kernel 64bit built with gcc 4.4???? or is this just another great bug that I must put up with.
I went to fire up Lucid this after noon and it gave me this error message. I didn't want to write all of that down so I took a picture. After several minutes it did nothing. I then decided to do a hard restart. This time it isn't giving a signal to the monitor. The monitor is less than half a year old, but I tried another. Still nothing. It show's no signal like it's not even hooked up to a machine. It doesn't even show the BIOS menu! I don't know if this is the cause or not but, I left my computer at my mothers house last night were they had a thunderstorm.
I have several applications like Virtual box and Mobloquer that took a hell of a long time to setup. Plus three guest operating systems, and some work that I didn't backup like videos. If we can get this up and running without re-installing.
