Ubuntu :: Want Upstream Lucid Kernel Update

May 30, 2010

I am looking for an upstream kernel in hope that a few bugs are ironed out in my Lucid Kubuntu install. I tried about 2 weeks ago to get a precompiled kerel from the upstream kernel PPA [URL] but the problem is that it was built with gcc 4.2 and lucid comes with gcc 4.4 a little bit sub-moronic considering that Lucid won't accept modules built with a different compiler. I am also a little sub-moronic as I don't know how to tell if todays kernel is still being built with the 4.2 compiler, I downloaded the build.log file but I can't find any references to gcc 4.2 but as I said when I installed and tried build my Nvidia modules - no dice.

It says it needs either a kernel built with gcc 4.4 or something else. I would rebuild from scratch but I only have 1mb left for the next 10 days then my isp charges me 10c per meg, so I don't want to download the 400mb for the ncurses etc etc (thats the size it told me from aptitude to get just the additional packages and then i would need the kernel source...) They are still using gcc 4.2, and why? Where there is an official prebuilt kernel 64bit built with gcc 4.4???? or is this just another great bug that I must put up with.

I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.

Ubuntu :: Update For A New Kernel, But Kernel Version Hasn't Changed

At the moment I am using kernel 2.6.31-14-generic. I'm not one of those people who needs to have the latest and greatest kernel to be happy, I just rely on the update manager. I swore that I saw an update for a new kernel, but my kernel version hasn't changed. I'm just curious if there was a new kernel that was released or if that was just an update to the kernel listed above.

Networking :: HTTPS Through Upstream Proxy

Oct 4, 2010

I am running a Linux firewall (IPcop) to bridge two networks. Hosts on network A have to use a proxy server in order to get online. This server runs a transparent proxy (squid) configured to use the proxy needed to connect to the internet as an upstream proxy, therefore meaning all the hosts on network B can connect to the internet without the user having to configure a proxy address.

The problem is that HTTPS also has to go through the upstream proxy, which I'm told can't be proxied by my server transparently because of security issues. This means that hosts on network B can't currently access HTTPS sites.

Ubuntu Networking :: Streaming Wirelessly To PS3 - Upstream Caps At 2Mbps

May 30, 2010

Here's the setup I have:

Linksys wrt400n (wrt54gs same issue)
Laptop with wireless n nic running ubuntu 10.04 (all updates)
PS3 connecting wirelessly to linksys (all updates)

If I run PS3 media server on my laptop wirelessly,I cannot stream up more than 2 Mpbs to the PS3. If I connect wired, I have no issues.

I've checked quite a bit about PS3 media server and confirmed that upnp is turned off (and turned on in past, no change). Nothing I've done seems to resolve the issue.I purchased a new router recently and both it and the old g have this issue so I'm pretty sure it isn't the wireless routers. how I can trace down this 2 Mbps cap when uploading wirelessly?

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Update On 9.04 To Kernel 2.6.28.18 No Nvidia?

Feb 5, 2010

9.04 this morning updated my kernel to I believe it is 2.6.28.18 and upon the reboot I had no desktop. It booted wanting to go into low graphics.

So I drop to shell and stop the gdm and try to run the latest nvidia run file I have and it hangs saying I have a x server running.

Otherwise I am needing assistance with getting my desktop back! I can boot into an older kernel and if need be I would like to roll back that latest update this morning, but once again I am forgetting the command line for that.

Red Hat :: RHEL4 Strange Kernel Panic On Boot - Kernel Update No Solution

Dec 31, 2008

I have the following strange thing with a RHEL4 installation. Since last week, the system did a reboot and now something is really fucked up. During boot we get the following messages (don't care about 'strange' typo's, my colleague typed it 'blind' from the screen)

Code:

The strange thing is that we never see a 'could not mount blabla' or similar messages. First we thought it was a failing kernel update by plesk, but even after manually updating the kernel with RHN RPM's, still the same message. Booting with rescue mode and then chroot the system works. After that we even can start things like plesk and so on.

We double checked things with another RHEL4 install, and at least two things were odd:

1: the working machine has /dev/dm-0 and /dev/dm-1, the broken one doesn't

2: some files on /dev didn't have group root, but 252

We tried to recreate the /dev/dm-X nodes with [vgmknodes -v], output:

Code:

A fdisk /dev/sda shows: /dev/sda2 XX XXX XXXXX Linux LVM (I removed the numbers because this line is from another machine, but rest was identical)

We have a copy of the boot partition so if one need more info please let me know.

grub.conf:

Code:

last part of init extracted from initrd-2.6.9-78.0.8.ELsmp.img:

Debian :: Upstream Firefox4 Package In /home/ Can't Find Plugins

May 5, 2011

I'm trying to use Debian Stable with some newer upstream packages. I've got the upstream Firefox tarball unbacked in /home/firefox/. The problem is that it can't find any plugins, flash or anything else. It's the 64 bit binary but still needed some 32 bit libraries to run. Does it need 32 bit plugins?

Iceweasel is uninstalled and and I deleted it's ./mozilla/ directory. I tried creating a /home/.mozilla/plugins/ directory and symlinking plugins into that and pretty much any other conceivable path where it could be looking for them.

I run upstream firefox from /home/ in the past and had no problems.

Ubuntu :: Lucid 64 Bit Install Creates PAE Kernel ?

May 9, 2010

I have been running 64 bit Koala on an HP desktop with 8 GB for a few months. Now that Lucid is out and the kernel has stopped changing every three days, I thought I would do a clean install of 64 bit Lucid. Backed everything up, verified the .iso I downloaded a few days ago and burned a CD, and away we go. Everything seems clean, finds the old /home, asks for a restart. I say go.

Suddenly there are way more options on my grub menu. Every Linux option has an alternate with PAE, and the PAE option is the default boot. I didn't even think about it and let it take the default. The reboot hangs. I had to pull the plug to turn the machine off.

I reboot again with PAE. It hangs again. Pull the plug. Reboot without PAE and I'm golden. Google soon turns up all sorts of old advice to add noapic to the boot parameters on a PAE kernel. Instead I sat back and started thinking.

Am I doing with a kernel marked PAE in the first place? This is a 64 bit install. It doesn't need PAE. I look again at the .iso and it's 64 bit.

Code:

Looks like 64 bit to me.

Why I have PAE options that will not boot?

Ubuntu :: Panic At Kernel - Lucid Won't Load

Jun 6, 2010

I went to fire up Lucid this after noon and it gave me this error message. I didn't want to write all of that down so I took a picture. After several minutes it did nothing. I then decided to do a hard restart. This time it isn't giving a signal to the monitor. The monitor is less than half a year old, but I tried another. Still nothing. It show's no signal like it's not even hooked up to a machine. It doesn't even show the BIOS menu! I don't know if this is the cause or not but, I left my computer at my mothers house last night were they had a thunderstorm.

I have several applications like Virtual box and Mobloquer that took a hell of a long time to setup. Plus three guest operating systems, and some work that I didn't backup like videos. If we can get this up and running without re-installing.
