Ubuntu :: Home Partition Halved After Lucid -> Maverick Upgrade?

Oct 13, 2010

i had with it was nVidia HDMI playback but that wasnt hard to solve. Ive been using ubuntu since Karmic and except for the HDMI i had no problems. On the 10.10.10 i upgraded to Maverick from the terminal with "do-release-upgrade". I noticed that command while i was at a friends house SSH'ing back home. When i came back i ran the command and took me a few hours to upgrade. And to my suprise i encountered 3 problems (Karmic -> Lucid = Zero)...

1) I cant use a few PPA's at the moment but its livable with.

2) Compiz broken but i can wait. Maybe might compile it myself if i get tired of Metacity.

3) My /home partition got halved. The first 2... Just inconvenience. The 3rd... I got 900GB's allocated to my /home so im missing quite a lot of space. I do remember the system reporting before that i had 900GB's but now it just says 485GB's.Heres what fdisk and df report

Code:
lisiano@Lisiano-Ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda
[sudo] password for lisiano:
Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes[code].....

I did reboot. The Restart Required icon is not lit either.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To Lucid With /home Partition?

May 13, 2010

I just need some clarification on the best upgrade path for me. I currently have Karmic installed with a separate partition for /home. I want to do a clean install of lucid with the CD.

What's the safest way to ensure my /home partition remains untouched? Should I install lucid overtop the karmic partition and then indicate a mount point for the other partition? or should I leave /home alone completely during installation and then just manually configure the mount point after install?

Edit: I had previously upgraded from jaunty to karmic via the update manager. This worked well but Karmic has felt very buggy overall so I feel a clean install might be best. although the audio is silent when the live cd boots :S

Ubuntu :: Share A Home Partition Between Lucid Windows 7

Jul 8, 2010

I was going to freshly format my laptop with Windows 7 x86_64 and Lucid Lynx x86_x64... I have a HUGE amount of media (music, videos, pictures, documents) and I don't keep all of it on my external harddrive.

The plan is to have the basic 2 partitions for Windows 7 and Ubuntu but I would like to have a 3rd partition that is just for media that I could share between the two OSes. I guess I would create symbolic links in the Ubuntu Home folder to point to the partition with media and in Windows I could probably just add those folders to libraries (unless someone knows how to move the User folder to another parition?)

What should I format this new partition as? NTFS? It needs to support files larger than 4GB and Windows can't read/write to basically anything.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Studio Lucid Directly To Studio Maverick?

Jan 9, 2011

I'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.

[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?

Ubuntu :: Tried To Upgrade - Home Partition Still Encrypted

Jul 10, 2010

I have a dual boot WinXP / Kubuntu system. Recently, I tried to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04. I have my Kubuntu partition set up with separate partitions for / , /home , and swap. Naturally, I wanted to wipe the slate clean, so I formatted / and left /home alone before doing the install. However, my /home partition was encrypted with the standard crypto that you get when you install. I just deleted the way in by wiping my / partition. Now all of my files are on my drive but encrypted. I do have the unencrypted passphrase given to me when the hard drive was first encrypted, so I am sure there is some way to get my files, but I am unsure how to apply it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Lucid From Wubi Install To Real Partition?

Jun 4, 2010

I have been using Lucid Lynx for almost 2 weeks and have got everything working, thanks to the "ubuntu" spirit in this forum. Now I am ready to upgrade my Wubi install to its separate partition. I have searched the forum and googled to find a way to do this, but I am still stuck.

I used lvpm (despite knowing that there is no confirmation of its working on Lucid Lynx), it didn't work. The installation happened alright but it wasn't able to show up the login screen (GDM?). It was stuck around the screen before that (Xsplash?).

There is this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591 that explains this process very well but remains silent on Lucid Lynx version.

I am sure there must be many other first timers who wanted to get their feet wet the easy way using wubi and would like to make it "permament" OS on their computers.

Is there anyone who can suggest if :

1. There is any way I can still use lvpm to transfer wubi install to separate installation (Ubuntu 10.04 release) ?

2. Any other way I can do this ??

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Mount Downloaded Home Partition After Upgrade

May 6, 2010

When I had 9.10 installed I had /home and / on separate partitions but this time, I wanted them both within the same. I downloaded my old home partition to an external drive, wiped the old partitions and installed lucid but now I can't mount the drive. I am trying to use:

Code:
sudo mount -o loop -t auto /mnt/storage/home.img /mnt/oldhome/
but I get an error of wrong fs type, bad option or bad superblock.
fdisk -l shows:

Code:
Disk /mnt/storage/home.img: 0 MB, 0 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 0 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Disk /mnt/storage/home.img doesn't contain a valid partition table. But in nautilus it shows it as the full 23.6 gb its supposed to be?

I know that medibuntu for example does not survive a version upgrade.

Ubuntu Servers :: NIC Bonding With Lucid/Maverick

Oct 14, 2010

How to bond NICs in Ubuntu server 10.04/10.10 correctly.

I installed ifenslave-2.6 on a fresh install. Then I tried going into the /etc/network/interfaces file and adding a new entry for bond0 to the file and adding bond-mode 6, bond-miimon 100 and slaves eth1 eth2 to the end of the bond0 config.

That did not work, it keep telling me it cannot bring up the interface even after a reboot it still does not work.

I also followed some tutorial I found online about editing /etc/modprobe.d/aliases

That did not work really well either, the interface came up but had no slaves.

Can anyone give a clue or a current method to bond interfaces in the 10.04/10.10

Ubuntu :: Maverick File Transfer 60% Slower Than Lucid?

Sep 28, 2010

I first noticed the disparity when I was moving some ISO files from Maverick to another partition. It was around 12-15 mb/s, where later I found Lucid to be around 30-50 mb/s.I then dropped into a VT and tried both from there, and discovered Maverick still much slower.thinking it may be the newer Nautilus, I re-booted and telinit 3, first using Maverick then Lucid.Lucid moved several gigabytes of data from one partition to another. It finished in "0m5.290s" where Maverick using the same computer and exact same data, moving to the exact same location "0m8.870s", Maverick being almost 60% slower. Not sure now where to look. Perhaps a newer library, or extra process being in use. Using telinit 3, I never loaded anything else. Is there any tools that can trace the moves.

Ubuntu :: Installing Maverick/Lucid Server On Asus TS Mini?

Nov 6, 2010

Mentioned post - [URL]... I was/am also having the same problem that was described above and fixed it with either 'nomodeset' or 'i915.modeset=0', however, once I installed Gnome (part of the "Ultimate Server Guide"), I had one of the following happen...

-On Maverick, it would continue to boot in the console and running commands like startx would result in an error (no screen) -On Lucid, it stopped booting into the server all together (even with the above fixes). Once it boots into the server (about 6-7 seconds later), I'll see a bunch of reddish square artifacts on the screen and the HD activity will stop and the screen will remain on, but nothing will be displayed.

I've searched high and low for help on this and nothing seems to fix the problem. I consider myself very technical but my linux experience is only fair/good. Mostly from Unix experience in college and messing around with Ubuntu Desktop on my netbook.

Problem: The splash either doesn't appear at all (black screen) or it appears in the text format rather than graphics... In some instances it even hopelessly tried to load the graphics splash - loaded the background but the instead of Ubuntu logo and the progress-bar animation it displayed a "Ubuntu 10.10" in a monospace font.

Ubuntu :: Using Old Home Backup In Separate Home Partition

Mar 28, 2011

recently i made a backup of my home directory in 10.10 before reinstalling 10.10. again. This time I chose to manually define the partitions (50GB Root, 25GB Swap, 325GB Home)Now i wish to migrate the old home into the newly installed home, which is on a separate partition.I have found the following documentation URL...Still, as a beginner I am not quite sure about the necessary steps to perform. As the new home is located on a separate partition is it possible to simple delete all directories there and copy all directories from old home to new home with rsync?

Do I have to install all the software that corresponds to the old home first followed by migrating home or first migrating home followed by installing the software such as thunderbird, Texlive2010 etc.Guess that migration should take place at a later stage. Otherwise my old profile files from firefox and thunderbird will be overwriten by new ones?

Ubuntu :: Move / Home To Existing / Home Partition?

Jul 1, 2011

Been digging around and not finding anything that quite works.

Background: I had an existing 10.10 install and 10.04 on another partition. When I installed the 10.04 I told it to use the existing /home partition which is also being used by the 10.10 install. All good, both users have directories with all their data in the same /home partition.

Issue: So, as the 10.04 was 32bit (experimenting but another story) I decided I would replace with 10.04 64bit. All went well except when I did the manual partitioning I screwed up and instead of setting the existing /home partition to 'use but don't format' - which I think is what I must have done last time - I left it as 'don't use and don't format'. So, obviously, now the new 10.04 install has its /home inside /, which I don't want. I want it on the existing /home partition as it was with the previous 10.04 install.

Question(s): Is there any simple(ish) way of doing this without a reinstall? Not a major problem as I have only just installed and can do it again without losing anything but time, but I would like to figure out a way to do it without if possible.I want to essentially move the /home/user directory (rather than the /home) and make it /media/home/user inside the existing partition. Seems easy enough on the surface but becomes involved as I investigate.Ubuntu 10.04 minimal install with Xfce DE.

Ubuntu :: No Gui After Upgrade To Maverick?

Oct 10, 2010

Today I upgraded my Lucid to Maverick. After upgrading, from "update-manager -d", I tried a couple of new programs (games, actually) and re-enabled the third party repositories. I don't have exotic things, just google chrome, transmission beta, and some more of this sort. After rebooting, the system enters in terminal instead of the regular gui. I tried to search online for possible solutions, but none worked. I tried

(1) startx
output: fatal server error, no screen found.
(2) sudo service gdm stop; sudo service gdm start
Output: gdm start/running process 1265

(3) removing the option nomodeset from the boot. To do this I edited /etc/default/grub, the line with the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX and ran grub-mkconfig. After a reboot, the computer returned to the terminal.

(4) some even suggested removing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but I don't have that file...

I have an acer timeline with initial hardware. I don't know which graphics card it has, if any... I really need to get my computer running, and I was looking for suggestions before reinstalling 10.04.
