Debian :: Can Debdelta Be Used With Backports
Apr 11, 2010I tried to use debdelta for an upgrade, but it only worked with the main debian and security repositories, and did not work with the backports repository (which is where the largest files, specifically openoffice.org, are for my system). Is there a way to set up debdelta to be used with backports? I tried editing the /etc/debdelta/sources.conf file to include it, but this did not work.

Nov 29, 2009I'm running Debian Lenny. I'm not pleased with kde4 so I'm going to be staying with Lenny. But I'm really looking to upgrade the old Openoffice 2.4 to 3.x. I've got the backports entry in my apt sources.list file. And I have downloaded the packages list. I'm just wondering if anyone else has installed the OO.o from backports? Does it work good and does it futz up anything from the stable install?
On a side, does anyone know where to get an updated Kopete. The version in Lenny is old and won't connect to Yahoo chat anymore (I guess they changed the protocol again.
These are really the only two reasons I messed with KDE4 anyhow. Kopete isn't a big deal because i can always use Yahoo messenger online anyhow, but really want to see how OO.o 3.x works.
Debian :: Backports.org 'SID' Style Breakage?
Mar 31, 2010For the 2nd time in a year. I really need v3.xx because 2.4 breaks formatting when opening v3 files. Why did i go back to 2.4 ? 3.1 was slower with calc. Now I'm stuck with 2.4 because of the ongoing stupidity in backports.org.

Sep 22, 2010If I install (say) Iceweasel from Lenny Backports, do I need to un-install the standard Lenny Iceweasel first, or will the new one overwrite/upgrade the old one? And- I understand pinning I think, but nobody explains what the * in the line:Package: * means. Does it mean all packages installed from the release specified in the line Pin: release a=lenny-backportsor do I need to specify each package in it's own entry (in /etc/apt/preferences)?

Sep 7, 2010The Debian Project is proud to announce that the backports service, previously available at [URL].. is now an official Debian service and will be available from backports.debian.org Backports are packages from the testing distribution recompiled for the current stable (or even oldstable) to provide users of the stable distribution with new versions of some packages, like the Linux kernel, the Iceweasel browser or the OpenOffice.org suite, without sacrificing the general stability of the system.
The archive currently has packages backported for the Lenny distribution (how many?), but the infrastructure to accept packages for the upcoming Squeeze release is already in place, to allow Debian Installer images to configure the backports repository by default without generating errors on user systems. The service for Squeeze will be enabled at a later date, after the release.
Because of some limitations in the Debian Bug Tracking System, any bugs relevant to backported packages still have to be reported to the debian-backports list, which will now also move on lists.debian.org.

I copied the debian-backports file from /usr/share/live-helper/examples/source to config/chroot_sources(as debian-backports.chroot and debian-backports.binary) and fixed the first problem (had to change "etch" to "lenny" in the files.)

May 29, 2011i have been trying to install iceweasel 3.5.16 from lenny-backports , but when i run the commandapt-get -t lenny-backports install iceweaselit just installs iceweasel 3i also tried it with iceweasel=3.5.16 at the end and it just said it cant find 3.5.16, but i know the package is there cos iv seen it on the websiteI have this line at the bottom of my sources.list filedeb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports lenny-backports mainand if it makes any differnence im running lenny on a powerpc computer (well it's actually a wii)

Debian Configuration :: Unable To Update Everthing From Backports?
Apr 10, 2011While I've been using Debian for various years, I have never actually used Stable. No Stable means no Backports, and I have a doubt about the latter. After reading Backports's documentation and the APT Preferences's manual page, I understand that, as of Squeeze, a backport must be installed manually, and that already installed backports are automatically updated. Also, because Backports archives have a pin-priority of 1, one cannot update all installed packages to the versions available in Backports.
I guess that one could achieve it by giving the Backports archive a pin-priority of 991. However, using the whole Backports repository is discouraged everywhere, and I don't really know why. How serious are these warnings? Does it cause a dependency Hell or is it just a warning for novice users?

Apr 10, 2010I'm new to Debian, but have used Ubuntu so I'm relatively familiar with APT. Ubuntu doesn't have backports, though, and I can't figure this out. I've checked the documentation for the answer, and I'm hoping that I'm just overlooking something simple.
I'm running lenny, and I want to install the Empathy instant messenger that's in lenny-backports (v. 2.26.2-1). I already have the stable package installed, and here's what happens when I try to upgrade:

Jan 14, 2010I have logged in today and update manager reminds me of an update with linx-backports-module-2.6.31-14-generic. However my current kernel has been updated a while ago and is now 2.6.31-17. That obviously is more recent that that backport version. What should i do? By the way that update is from a PPA repository other that the default. I am wondering the update manager has no way to tell which kernel version i have at all? Jul 9, 2010I have just installed Fedora 13 on my Lenovo Ideapad S12 (company laptop, evaluating Fedora for companywide use on all laptops) and a facing a weird problem with KDE4 and NetworkManager / knetworkmanager. The laptops wifi card is a Broadcom BCM4312 and I have successfully extracted the necessary b43 firmware. The b43 module loads on boot and the wireless card is activated and ready to use. However, NetworkManager doesn't seem to agree and has wireless disabled by default every time I reboot or even logout / login. I have to check the box manually after which it automatically connects to my wifi network at home.
Any idea where I can check that box automatically on boot?

Aug 24, 2010To all those who hit this after installing 11.3: Enable the tapping function of your touch pad by adding Option "TapButton1" "1" to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-synaptics.conf. then restart X (relogin). It will work with all WMs for which SuSE didn't bother to add a GUI config function/utility (xfce, WMaker, twm/fvwm, etc).
To SuSE: WHY? Why is this disabled by default? Why has a system/HW function to be enabled at WM level?? Why only KDE/Gnome?

But when I visit http:/localhost ，it shows up the list of files in <var/www/html> as if a ftp server browsed in web page. So how can I set http://localhost load my default web page index.html ?Second :I want to set up a web server on Internet through my router . I applied for DDNS account & input it into router correctly . I set virtual host in server to redirect any access from port 80 to 192.168.1.2:80 in LAN . Just for in case , I also download and running the DDNS software & installed it on PC 192.168.1.2 in LAN . My DDNS provider is oray.cn . It's a Chinese server provider . I don't think there is anything wrong with oray.cn . But if you need its information just visit oray.cn (Google can translate it for you). So I want to know did I miss something to set up a web server in this kind of situation
