View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Lucid in my laptop like this:
/sda1 - ntfs windows xp
/sda2 - /boot (ext4,350M)
/sda5 - / (31528.59M)
/sda6 swap (3,2g)
/sda4 - ntfs windows data, music etc.
After I installed 10.04, I installed following programs:
-Chromium BSU (game)
-Chromium - Brownser
-Xchat
Then I followe EXACTLY this guide:

But NO UPGRADE button appears. How Can I upgrade, without and make a fresh install? I also tried in CLI to:
z@z-laptop:/$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to revert the notification area to pre-lucid behavior? I'm not sure what the point of removing the right-click functionality was(or if it's a bug), but it's pretty horrific.
On the off-chance this is a bug, I will elaborate. Right-clicking on Kopete brings up the 'remove from panel' menu, and left-clicking on Kopete brings up what used to be seen with a right-click.
I made the error of installing FGLRX on lucid. After the install, Plymouth resolution sucks and my laptop will not come out of suspend/hibernate. When I use jockey-gtk to disable FGLRX, it will not allow me to use compiz for 3d graphics. However, out of the box, I was able to run compiz no problem. How can I revert lucid back to factory form, where it was able to perform 3d acceleration without the use of FGLRX?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?
Just wondering if anyone is using the Maverick kernel backport with Lucid? Just wanting to know how stable it is.

How to bond NICs in Ubuntu server 10.04/10.10 correctly.
I installed ifenslave-2.6 on a fresh install. Then I tried going into the /etc/network/interfaces file and adding a new entry for bond0 to the file and adding bond-mode 6, bond-miimon 100 and slaves eth1 eth2 to the end of the bond0 config.
That did not work, it keep telling me it cannot bring up the interface even after a reboot it still does not work.
I also followed some tutorial I found online about editing /etc/modprobe.d/aliases
That did not work really well either, the interface came up but had no slaves.
Can anyone give a clue or a current method to bond interfaces in the 10.04/10.10
I'm trying to setup a server for my home office, But I heard that using Maverick is not for office purpose and asked me to use Lucid instead.Should I download the Lucid version install it or do direct downgrade to Lucid?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI first noticed the disparity when I was moving some ISO files from Maverick to another partition. It was around 12-15 mb/s, where later I found Lucid to be around 30-50 mb/s.I then dropped into a VT and tried both from there, and discovered Maverick still much slower.thinking it may be the newer Nautilus, I re-booted and telinit 3, first using Maverick then Lucid.Lucid moved several gigabytes of data from one partition to another. It finished in "0m5.290s" where Maverick using the same computer and exact same data, moving to the exact same location "0m8.870s", Maverick being almost 60% slower. Not sure now where to look. Perhaps a newer library, or extra process being in use. Using telinit 3, I never loaded anything else. Is there any tools that can trace the moves.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi have a sony vaio VGN-NW150J laptop that was running lucid and had wireless no problem but when i upgraded to maverick i lost all functionality of my intel 5100 agn wireless card. when i run iwconfig this is what i get
Code:
iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
and on bootup it flashes something about no suitable unicode found i can't get a good look at it maverick boot up too fast.
i had with it was nVidia HDMI playback but that wasnt hard to solve. Ive been using ubuntu since Karmic and except for the HDMI i had no problems. On the 10.10.10 i upgraded to Maverick from the terminal with "do-release-upgrade". I noticed that command while i was at a friends house SSH'ing back home. When i came back i ran the command and took me a few hours to upgrade. And to my suprise i encountered 3 problems (Karmic -> Lucid = Zero)...
1) I cant use a few PPA's at the moment but its livable with.
2) Compiz broken but i can wait. Maybe might compile it myself if i get tired of Metacity.
3) My /home partition got halved. The first 2... Just inconvenience. The 3rd... I got 900GB's allocated to my /home so im missing quite a lot of space. I do remember the system reporting before that i had 900GB's but now it just says 485GB's.Heres what fdisk and df report
Code:
lisiano@Lisiano-Ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda
[sudo] password for lisiano:
Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes[code].....
I did reboot. The Restart Required icon is not lit either.
Mentioned post - [URL]... I was/am also having the same problem that was described above and fixed it with either 'nomodeset' or 'i915.modeset=0', however, once I installed Gnome (part of the "Ultimate Server Guide"), I had one of the following happen...
-On Maverick, it would continue to boot in the console and running commands like startx would result in an error (no screen) -On Lucid, it stopped booting into the server all together (even with the above fixes). Once it boots into the server (about 6-7 seconds later), I'll see a bunch of reddish square artifacts on the screen and the HD activity will stop and the screen will remain on, but nothing will be displayed.
I've searched high and low for help on this and nothing seems to fix the problem. I consider myself very technical but my linux experience is only fair/good. Mostly from Unix experience in college and messing around with Ubuntu Desktop on my netbook.
The new NVIDIA drivers don't seem to work as seamlessly as back in Jaunty and before. In Lucid when I activated the drivers I had to do some grub tweaks to make my splash look normal... But with Maverick it is even more messed up...
Problem: The splash either doesn't appear at all (black screen) or it appears in the text format rather than graphics... In some instances it even hopelessly tried to load the graphics splash - loaded the background but the instead of Ubuntu logo and the progress-bar animation it displayed a "Ubuntu 10.10" in a monospace font.
i've been using ubuntu with wubi, and I'd like to install it on my new hard drive (so windows is on one hdd and ubuntu is on another). afaik, grub will be installed on the hdd w/ ubuntu, and i have to set it to recognize the other (windows) hdd. assuming that i want to get rid of ubuntu and just use windows, what steps do I have to take to do so? (if grub is only on the ubuntu hdd, then would I just have to format it?)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI made a usb install drive on a mac by following the instructions on the ubuntu download page, but had problems getting the GRUB loader to run the USB at boot on the DreamLinux PC i wanted to install it on, so I have now sorted access to a CD writer to make a liveCD.
However I need to convert the USB FDD back to just a regular FDD for my mother to use. I am not at all familiar with Macs, or the terminal utilities (though I am able to use the terminal to some degree) so would appreciate help with this procedure or a pointer to some steps to do it.
Currently the drive is named Ubuntu 10.04 LTS when it mounts on mac, before the img write it was just untitled, I cannot delete the ubuntu files from it or write new ones, and I don't know how to do a reformat on a mac.
I need he drive to be able to work again with windows and mac... so will need to reformat to FAT32 I guess?
i feel really stupid for "upgrading" to gnome 3 to try it out and read warnings saying it can mess up your system. i went on thinking oh it'll be fine and the update process messed up or something. now i have a barely functional desktop and just want to go back to unity 11.04. i added the ppa from[URL]

I would like to depreciate back to 3.5.8 or 3.5.9 until this issue is resolved, as currently this is preventing me from working the internet on my websites, etc. How can I get a previous version of Firefox to install? Using Jaunty 9.04
i have a multi-monitor setup running two ati radeon 4870 cards.
after upgrading to 10.10 from 10.04 fglrx is constantly crashing. it works with some applications such as the browsers chrome, firefox and other applications such as nautilus but if i try to view videos or even open another application i use often keepassx it will crash to a terminal screen.
ubuntu 10.10 is very unusable in this current state, is there a way i can easily revert to 10.04? i have tried the ubuntu provided driver after fully purging fglrx as well as the one provided by ati and to no luck.
Ever since updating to 9.10 from 9.04 I have been experiencing a logon loop problem. Maybe 1 in 15 tries is successful. When I was able to logon I was not able to mount the multi-boot Hd.. (Windows NTFS, Linux root Sda2, Home Sda3, Swap Sda4, + unallocated space). A error screen told me that I didn't have admin privileges.. Thats incorrect as I'm the only user and logged on at the time. Some other changes I tried also produced the same error. I found some clues on this forum to address the logon issue, and changed my resolution to 1280 x960 and that seems to let me logon each time as needed. But trying to mount the hd still results in the error message.
I cannot use the computer at the current resolution, too hard on the eyes.. (don't know how anyone could). My question is... Since I have the live CD for version 9.04 and that version worked just fine, how should I or do I need to delete ver 9.10 and than reinstall version 9.04? If I run the 9.04 install program will it automatically choose the Sda2 partition, or do I need to precondition and define Sda2 & Sda3, & swap drives again? Will it perform the installation seeing that theres a newer version already on the hd? Also is there a option to uncheck so I won't get any auto-updates because it appears that the newer version is not compatible with my computer.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and I have been keeping it updated via update manager.Last night the update manager popped up and I selected to update all required updates without checking what the updates were. While shutting down I noticed that I needed to reboot to complete the update, so I rebooted. After reboot the wireless network card disappeared. So I moved the PC and plugged in the ethernet cable. Oddly sometimes it shows disconnected for no reason and I have to reboot. What's even worst is that Ubuntu now locks up completely within 15 minutes of a reboot.None of the alt+sysrq commands do anything! How do I find out what the updates were and is there any way to I revert my system back to pre updates without having to reinstall?
