Aug 22, 2010I am more a 'terminal-apt-get-fan' then an 'update-manager-fan'. The only thing I don't know how to do, is get a list of proposed updates after sudo apt-get-update, like the update manager shows me after I pressed the "check" button. Now I bet there is a way, I just can't find it.

Jan 4, 2010In the "software sources" windows under the "Updates" tab I have checked "Pre-released updates" and installed all the updates. I no longer want to track the proposed updates and have unchecked that item. Now am back to just security and recommended checked. How do i get it to downgrade the packages that it has modified when I had "Pre-released" checked? I want to get back on the stable "Recommended Updates". It seems to have changed what it looks at for updates but did not downgrade the packages.

Jul 14, 2010Running fine for a couple of weeks now, my Ubuntu Lucid install on a Sony laptop Vaio VGN-N21E went through some updates an hour ago. After the updates were installed, I shut the laptop down. The shutdown was slow but graceful with no errors. Now, when I try and power back on, I get errors about CIFS stating that the network share I map to could not connect. Also, that the network could not connect. I usually connect wirelessly and had no problems until now. It lets me log in but freezes after I see my desktop. No cursor or keyboard response...no response to CTRL+ALT+DEL...I can only manually force shutdown....

May 6, 2010The reason why I'm pissed because so many people out there that use Linux aways say Microsoft sucks. But I have more problems with Linux, at least with Microsoft problems I can solve. Now since I got that out of my system, here's my issue.
I just installed LTS 10.04 everything was working fine, I have an ATI 5700 card installed so I installed the ATI drivers not the open stuff. After install the drivers worked perfectly no problems. After several days of using the computer, I said I'll run some updates. I did so and rebooted my computer and BOOOM now my ATI drivers do not work. I can't enable desktop effects, can't use cube etc. Not only that but if I go to the prior build it won't work there either. If this was windows 7, I would just reinstall and it would work.
Luckily for me I made a image of my Ubuntu 10.04 and did a restore and everything went back to normal because I restored the image prior to the update. Now just for kicks I ran the updates again to be sure the updates did indeed break the vid drivers. Yep, after the updates ran, reboot, BOOM broke again. What gives? Is it the kernel updates? If so then I guess I'll run updates without updating the kernel. By the way I did try to install the drivers that come with Ubuntu but that work either. I guess I have to do the restore again. I rather use the ATI drivers vs the open stuff.
Questions are the updates unstable? If it is then why release? Can anyone provide any solutions? Should I run updates but skip Kernal changes? If not then what is blowing up the drivers?

May 8, 2010I have noticed in the recent updates there is a Kernel update 2.6.32-22 but there is no restricted modules included. On my Desktop I have a Nvidia card which I installed the driver using the Hardware Drivers Application. As far as I know these Drivers are ether reinstalled or updated whenever there is a kernel update.
I also have a Laptop with a ATI Radeon card which I did run the updates and ended up (after the reboot) in low graphics mode, after a bit of work I was able to reinstall the drivers and get my desktop back so that's ok now.
I had this problem a few years ago with an old version of Ubuntu, kernel updates but no restricted drivers. The drivers turned up the next day and all was fine. I was just wandering if this is a known issue with Lucid or if anyone else has had this problem, It's been a couple of days since I noticed the Kernel update but still Restricted Modules. Oh I'm using Ubuntu Lucid 10.04

Now I've got to download .deb files and upgrade manually. I would like to be able to install unstable / testing releases for packages. I have checked everything in software sources, but I still don't get the newest kernel proposed. Another question: what are "backports"?

Debian :: Can Debdelta Be Used With Backports
Apr 11, 2010I tried to use debdelta for an upgrade, but it only worked with the main debian and security repositories, and did not work with the backports repository (which is where the largest files, specifically openoffice.org, are for my system). Is there a way to set up debdelta to be used with backports? I tried editing the /etc/debdelta/sources.conf file to include it, but this did not work.

Nov 29, 2009I'm running Debian Lenny. I'm not pleased with kde4 so I'm going to be staying with Lenny. But I'm really looking to upgrade the old Openoffice 2.4 to 3.x. I've got the backports entry in my apt sources.list file. And I have downloaded the packages list. I'm just wondering if anyone else has installed the OO.o from backports? Does it work good and does it futz up anything from the stable install?
On a side, does anyone know where to get an updated Kopete. The version in Lenny is old and won't connect to Yahoo chat anymore (I guess they changed the protocol again.
These are really the only two reasons I messed with KDE4 anyhow. Kopete isn't a big deal because i can always use Yahoo messenger online anyhow, but really want to see how OO.o 3.x works.
Debian :: Backports.org 'SID' Style Breakage?
Mar 31, 2010For the 2nd time in a year. I really need v3.xx because 2.4 breaks formatting when opening v3 files. Why did i go back to 2.4 ? 3.1 was slower with calc. Now I'm stuck with 2.4 because of the ongoing stupidity in backports.org.

Sep 22, 2010If I install (say) Iceweasel from Lenny Backports, do I need to un-install the standard Lenny Iceweasel first, or will the new one overwrite/upgrade the old one? And- I understand pinning I think, but nobody explains what the * in the line:Package: * means. Does it mean all packages installed from the release specified in the line Pin: release a=lenny-backportsor do I need to specify each package in it's own entry (in /etc/apt/preferences)?

The archive currently has packages backported for the Lenny distribution (how many?), but the infrastructure to accept packages for the upcoming Squeeze release is already in place, to allow Debian Installer images to configure the backports repository by default without generating errors on user systems. The service for Squeeze will be enabled at a later date, after the release.
Because of some limitations in the Debian Bug Tracking System, any bugs relevant to backported packages still have to be reported to the debian-backports list, which will now also move on lists.debian.org.
