Ubuntu :: Lost Icons / Switch It Back?
May 17, 2011
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a usb stick and have been running it from there. I was messing around with the "Login Screen" utility and changed the session choice to "User defined session" (or something similar). I thought this would allow me to pick the session to use (Unity, Gnome) but that was wrong. So right now, when I login, I have a blank screen with no menu bars. If someone could give me the commandline command to run the "Login Screen", I should be able to switch it back.

I killed a Process from the System Monitor, it was something related to notifications. From that time, I'm not getting any notification icons on the top-bar. It doesn't shows me any application icons. like VLC, XCHAT or even the Active Connection icon. Except that, everything is working as like a fresh install. I'd restarted my system later but it's still the same. I want to restore the system.

I installed ubuntu 9.1 today, my friend also installed it using a disc which I borrowed Everything seemed to go fine. I used boot camp to make a partition after going through the installation process I found out that, that was a bad idea and i just made a ubuntu partition of 18gb. I was able to get rid of the bootcamp partition so now i Just have free disk space left out of that.
I wanted to switch back to my Mac to get to work on somethings after I had installed ubuntu. However a after the GRUB and clicking on Mac A black screen with words and numbers I haven't seen before popped up. Here is some of what it said
panic (cpu 0 caller 0x2ad0d5): Incompatible boot args version 1 revision
Debugger called <panic> Backtrace (cpu 0) frame return ad. 4 potential args on stack ** alota numbers here**
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: unknown
Mac os version: not yet set **some other stuff here*
I really just want to use my mac again. It doesn't matter to me if I still have ubuntu or not.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 over Windows 7, getting rid of Win7. I have decided that I want to switch back to Windows 7, because of more compatibility. Windows 7 came pre-installed on my laptop. Is there any way I can recover it? I did a full install of Ubuntu 10.10.

I'm installing XUBUNTU on an old Pentium 4 1.6 GHz machine with 256 MB memory. The Copy files progress reach nearly 90% and remained there for more than 15 minutes. I did a CTRL+ALT+F1 on the keyboard and I could see a terminal with ubuntu$. I now want to go back to the GUI interface to see where the progress is or to see any completion message. How do I do that?

I am relatively familiar with Ubuntu, but some time last week it updated and now ALT + Tab temporarily minimizes windows to switch between open apps and shows a little window with icons representing the open apps. I much preferred the old way of just switching between them without minimizing and the more graphically appealing (I guess to some) window. I have checked Keyboard Shortcuts and it seems that I no longer have that my original option available, is there another way to select that option, or add it back to the keyboard shortcuts or am I just stuck with it unless I decide to back up to a previous release? Hope this made sense, and I won't be able to try any suggestions until tomorrow so please feel free to throw as many suggestions as you want to me and I will try them all one by one tomorrow morning.

I edited some mpeg videos using Mencoder to crop unwanted footage from the beginning and the end. It worked, but now the file does not have a "visual" icon, i.e. a still from the video. The properties of the new file also reveal that it thinks it's an audio file! The file still plays (as a video) okay though.A typical command I used to extract just the first 14 seconds of the video was:
mencoder "e03.mpg" -o ee03a.mpg -ss 0:0:0 -endpos 0:0:14 -oac copy -ovc copyI did try to make up a new icon by making a snapshot of the movie playing, then using the image to replace the icon in the properties window. (I am using Nautilus file manager in Ubuntu). The icon it now gives me looks like a small sheet of paper with one end curled up.I can appreciate that editing the video length might have "lost" the icon information, but is there any way I can put it back again

When there is a power failure at my university for about 30 minute, my computer stays up because of a UPS, but the switch it is connected to via ethernet is reset. After this, my machine loses network connectivity until I manually select the network using nm-applet.
In System -> Preferences -> Network Connections, the network has the "Connect automatically" box checked.
However, in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, there is a line that says:
Code:
no-auto-default=00:30:48:b0:11:07,
and that is the MAC address of the ethernet card.
I'm running Ubuntu jaunty.

Having a bit of an issue with my Lucid x64 HTPC. I can get the image to appear through DVI on a spare external monitor, but when it is disconnected and switched back to HDMI I get not picture on the TV any longer. I switched the sound output to an external USB device for testing the unit and noticed on reboot that I had lost everything via HDMI even though the setting had been switched back previously. Obviously a setting must be off here somewhere, but I've yet to find it. I've rebooted with only the HDMI connected, but still nothing.

To the best of my recollection, here's what happened. I installed Ubuntu 10, all default options. No custom themes. Using Gnome. I installed Kubuntu. Again, all default options. Still using Gnome, though. I upgraded to 11. Then, when I try to switch back to Ubuntu, I can't get the default Ubuntu theme to stick. When I log in, it looks correct for about twenty seconds, then everything switches to Ambiance or Plymouth or something else. Basically, I'm trying to get the brown task bar back and I can't. It's all light-colored.

Had a bit of a play with KDE 4.5.
I want to switch back to 4.4.xx in Opensuse
What's the easiest way to do this? Do I just use the package switcher to change back to the update repo?

I'm running Kubuntu, but after trying an Ubuntu tool to help configure Grub, my boot up plash screen (xsplash? My card isn't KMS compliant, so I'm not using Plymouth) now shows the Ubuntu splash.
Anyone know how to switch which boot splash is used back?

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. Mainboard Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2V. My LCD is a HDTV monitor which is plugged to onboard graphic card.
I don't know what happen with my Ubuntu. It sometimes goes black when I try to wake my PC when it's suspended previously. The screen is black, but I still can move mouse cursor. I also can do blindly click on stuff on screen (I could play a song last time by clicking randomly). This problem also happens sometimes when I switch back to PC from TV (My LCD is a HDTV monitor).
The only action I can do when it happened is reset my PC.

I have lost some icons from my desktop, they are, firefox, yast, thunderbird, emacs, the space and the names are still there, and when I hover the mouse over the space, it is highlighted as it should be. The application opens and runs as normal when I click on the space where the icon should be. The icons are also missing from the favorites bar on the left side and also from the panel top left when the app is running.I have tried, rebuilding the icon cache in 'usr/share/icons/hicolor', and also all othercon caches for that matter, and no difference. I tried uninstalling and installing the app, no differenence. I tried changing themes and icons from Tweak Tool, no difference. As far as I can see the icons are there in the hicolor directory

I have a weird problem here with a 9.04 server. We have a raid 5 disk formatted in EXT4 which remounted automatically when we accessed to the lost+found folder which is in the root of that disk.
I tried to delete it but I can't. It's a bit annoying because I have to prevent all users and backups to access to that folder.

Had to restart following an extract crash, and upon restarting, much of my theme, including all my icons had changed. Prior to this I was using the Awoken Icon Set. I've gone through and rerun the Awoken Customization script, but no luck. Simply trying to change my theme, and icons in the theme manager doesn't work either.

After playing around with Ubuntu Tweaks to remove the "Recent Documents" logging, I somehow ended up losing the icons for "Applications" and "Files & Folders".
I tried lots of different things but the only thing that seemed to sort it was this:
Log out. Log in under Ubuntu Classic (for some reason dropping back to tty with Ctr, Alt and F2 didn't do it). Bring up the terminal and do code...
Log back into Ubuntu (not classic) and hopefully, you should end up with all icons back as they were.
This worked for me but I can't remember if I'd gotten rid of the ".recent-documents.xbel" file in my home folder first, so if all else fails you could try that before you start removing and re-installing Unity.

Alright so I lost a sd card that I had uploaded to my comp before it crashed but I wiped the card before I lost it and I want back what was on it..I have ran testdisk and photorec and it has only brought me back 5 or so pics, but when I search the card in deleted files through either program it lets me see the file names, and when I try to save it the computer doesn't read the jpeg file when I go to open the recovered file.

Having just upgraded to 10.10, I've discovered Unity, and I'm afraid its not for me. I absolutely loved the previous interface, and was quite shocked and saddened to see it disappear. But I'd like to keep all the other new software that comes with 10.10. So my question is, can I install the old 10.04 beautiful interface to run on the 10.10 edition? Re-installation is a MS solution, that turned me on to linux in the first place!
