I wanted to split adsl line, but a friend of mine explained that this isn't possible.. So now my question is that can you somehow switch ethernet back to dsl or have a computer convert it so that nothing has to be done to the other modem.

I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.
My laptop was working fine on wireless till the userinterface changed and it defaulted to ethernet and now it won't let me go back on wireless How do i disable ethernet?

I understand the problems with switches is that they dont assign IPs like routers do, but if my ubuntu machine worked like a router by assigning IPs, could it work? Current setup is as such. I have one ubuntu machine with 1 ethernet port (this shall be the main preferably) 1 mac with a single ethernet port 1 modem with a single ethernet port that cannot assign more than one IP address. And a 5 port switch. Would it be possible to place the modem into the switch, get the ubuntu machine to receive the IP address, and broadcast all other address' to everyone else via the same switch and ethernet cable?

View 6 Replies View Relatedi am getting really pissed off with my new core i5 system I have a gigabyte p55m-ud2 mobo ([URL]) which's got a Realtek 8111D lan chipset it connected to my router after fresh install of ubun10 and then i installed MacOSX 10.6.3 and it worked there too then i came back to ubuntu and it didn't work anymore, after several restarts it was still not working until i took out the power cord and mobo battery, and reinstalled them back later which caused ethernet to work once again. but then after a while it started not to work anymore, which usually got fixed with a reboot. now this time i had ethernet working and i just resumed from screensaver and it stopped agian
there are no green or orange lights flashing at the back and when i take the cable out and reinsert it nothing comes on but with a shutdown they do come on i don't have this problem on the other harddisk which now has win7 and i some times manually change the sata cable to boot into windows and use itunes and some other stuff to load music to my iphone. I dont like to have dualboot and i dont like to use win7 either i just have it on the other hard disk just in case
is the manual switching of hard disk causing this to happen? why do i get it working with restart/shutdown and when i am using it fine it just decides to stop working after a resume from screensaver or sometimes for other reasons and why does none of this happen on win7 is there a way to reconfigure the ethernet drivers or other stuff without a reboot i am thinking it might be a problem with network manager or a bug or something network manager is really crappy and i used to use wicd until that started to do funky things ( like not connecting to hidden networks, launchpad Bug #473817)
OS: Maverick Ethernet driver: tested with sky2 an sk98lin This has been driving me crazy for the last few months: if I unplug ethernet cable while my laptop is on reconnecting it sometimes does not bring the connection back.
And once ethernet is gone nothing that I try seems to consistently bring it back. Rebooting, disabling/enabling the driver, disabling/enabling NIC in BIOS, changing driver from sky2 to sk98lin, deleting connection from Network Manager, resetting the router - nothing helps. It seems to come back randomly a few weeks later. Once I used live Ubuntu on a USB stick and ethernet came back not only on a live distro but then when I rebooted also on my main OS. But when I tried that trick next time ethernet was missing in the live distro as well.
Also once I was able to revive ethernet but compiling sk98lin driver, blacklisting sky2 and rebooting. Of course next time doing the same routine did not help. The thing is - ethernet works fine with either sky2 or sk98lin and I can unplug the cable and plug it back in most of the time without any issues. But then every so often - bang and I'm stuck with only wireless until ethernet suddenly starts working again.
Since I upgraded to Lucid, I am dealing with serious instabilities related to my wireless card. What happens is that when there is a lot of wireless activity the computer freezes. It is a complete freeze, the mouse stops moving, if something was coming out of the speakers it keeps echoing, and the only solution is to turn off the computer. My wireless card is Intersil ISL3890/ISL3886. My whole computer is an HP z555. I'm thinking that is should be a bug in the wireless adapter driver, which is p54pci. The only solution I can think of is to blacklist it and set up ndiswrapper. I am not very comfortable with this solution since a native linux driver should be better than ndiswrapper.
I'm currently running Fedora 13, after I updated the kernel to 2.6.34, I have to run (as a superuser) "service NetworkManager start" in order to start my network manager, is there are way I can run this on startup?
Also my ethernet connection seems to only work when I restart/boot up my computer, when I wake my computer up from being asleep, the ethernet stops working.
while my brother was browsing the web on my windows partition he had a blue screen pop up, one of the soft/hardware error ones, not a true BSOD, anyways, ever since my lan port on the computer seems to not be activiating as no wired connection is recognized. The lan port/card is directly attached to the Mother Board, it's a gigabyte motherboard in a self-build computer. I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to troubleshoot this and see if it is truly a hardware problem or if its something else.
View 9 Replies View RelatedQuick question. I have a Dell Latitude E6500 with Fedora 13 on it. There is a wireless radio switch (hardware) on the right side of the machine, next to the CD drive. When I flip it to "off", the wireless gets disconnected -- as I expect. But when I flip the switch back to the "on" position, nothing happens -- wireless is still disabled.
How do I re-enable the wireless after I flip the switch back to the "on" position?
I installed ubuntu 9.1 today, my friend also installed it using a disc which I borrowed Everything seemed to go fine. I used boot camp to make a partition after going through the installation process I found out that, that was a bad idea and i just made a ubuntu partition of 18gb. I was able to get rid of the bootcamp partition so now i Just have free disk space left out of that.
I wanted to switch back to my Mac to get to work on somethings after I had installed ubuntu. However a after the GRUB and clicking on Mac A black screen with words and numbers I haven't seen before popped up. Here is some of what it said

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 over Windows 7, getting rid of Win7. I have decided that I want to switch back to Windows 7, because of more compatibility. Windows 7 came pre-installed on my laptop. Is there any way I can recover it? I did a full install of Ubuntu 10.10.

I did a CTRL+ALT+F1 on the keyboard and I could see a terminal with ubuntu$. I now want to go back to the GUI interface to see where the progress is or to see any completion message. View 3 Replies View RelatedI am relatively familiar with Ubuntu, but some time last week it updated and now ALT + Tab temporarily minimizes windows to switch between open apps and shows a little window with icons representing the open apps. I much preferred the old way of just switching between them without minimizing and the more graphically appealing (I guess to some) window. I have checked Keyboard Shortcuts and it seems that I no longer have that my original option available, is there another way to select that option, or add it back to the keyboard shortcuts or am I just stuck with it unless I decide to back up to a previous release? Hope this made sense, and I won't be able to try any suggestions until tomorrow so please feel free to throw as many suggestions as you want to me and I will try them all one by one tomorrow morning.

I can get the image to appear through DVI on a spare external monitor, but when it is disconnected and switched back to HDMI I get not picture on the TV any longer. I switched the sound output to an external USB device for testing the unit and noticed on reboot that I had lost everything via HDMI even though the setting had been switched back previously. Obviously a setting must be off here somewhere, but I've yet to find it. I've rebooted with only the HDMI connected, but still nothing.

I was messing around with the "Login Screen" utility and changed the session choice to "User defined session" (or something similar). I thought this would allow me to pick the session to use (Unity, Gnome) but that was wrong. So right now, when I login, I have a blank screen with no menu bars. If someone could give me the commandline command to run the "Login Screen", I should be able to switch it back.

Again, all default options. Still using Gnome, though. I upgraded to 11. Then, when I try to switch back to Ubuntu, I can't get the default Ubuntu theme to stick. When I log in, it looks correct for about twenty seconds, then everything switches to Ambiance or Plymouth or something else. Basically, I'm trying to get the brown task bar back and I can't. It's all light-colored.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. Mainboard Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2V. My LCD is a HDTV monitor which is plugged to onboard graphic card.
I don't know what happen with my Ubuntu. It sometimes goes black when I try to wake my PC when it's suspended previously. The screen is black, but I still can move mouse cursor. I also can do blindly click on stuff on screen (I could play a song last time by clicking randomly). This problem also happens sometimes when I switch back to PC from TV (My LCD is a HDTV monitor).
The only action I can do when it happened is reset my PC.
Having just upgraded to 10.10, I've discovered Unity, and I'm afraid its not for me. I absolutely loved the previous interface, and was quite shocked and saddened to see it disappear. But I'd like to keep all the other new software that comes with 10.10. So my question is, can I install the old 10.04 beautiful interface to run on the 10.10 edition? Re-installation is a MS solution, that turned me on to linux in the first place!

When I open the screen, the display output does NOT switch back. This occurs when running X and when in command line mode. Is there any way to get the output to automatically switch back when I open the screen?
