Jan 24, 2010Recently, I accidentally erased plymouth from my Fedora 12 system.I now have reinstalled plymouth.But I still do not have my graphical boot. How do I switch back to graphical boot?

Fedora :: Get The Graphical Screen Back By Adding Vga=795 To /boot/grub/grub.conf
Nov 21, 2009since i have installed the nvidia drivers i have lost the graphical boot and just had a bar at the bottom of the screen instead. i tried to get the graphical screen back by adding vga=795 to my /boot/grub/grub.conf but when i rebooted not only did i not get the graphical boot or the toolbar at bottom.
i got list of all the drivers and services it is starting with ok next to it. i have also since doing this lost the bit when restarting or shutting down getting the words restarting or shutting down and just get blank screen with flashing cursor. i removed the vga=795 and i still get the list of drivers/services loading.
how do i get the quiet option back. i have checked /boot/grub/grub.conf and it has the quiet in it.i have also tried running update-grub but get message command not found. i have attached the grub.conf file

Aug 19, 2010I'm running Kubuntu, but after trying an Ubuntu tool to help configure Grub, my boot up plash screen (xsplash? My card isn't KMS compliant, so I'm not using Plymouth) now shows the Ubuntu splash.
Anyone know how to switch which boot splash is used back?
Fedora Installation :: Switch Back From Windows Bootloader To Grub?
Feb 4, 2009I thought it would be cool and easy to install Windows 7, ended up being a headache and worthless so far. Now I only have the windows bootloader with vista and windows 7 as options. How can I get grub going again? I have all 6 fedore core 10 cds and a live cd in case those will help, I am using the live cd to play in fedora right now, but I am not sure how to get access to grub.conf and what to change in it, because I am pretty sure I have to add Windows 7 to it.

I don't know the first thing about Linux and am totally lost trying to get back to my other hard drive to access the Windows XP OS. All my stuff for the courses I'm taking this summer are stored THERE. Can anyone help me with very simple, easy to follow instructions for how to get back to Windows AND also have access to Linus on the secondary drive?

Jul 8, 2010I have a server with Fedora 13 x86_64 installed that uses gnome as the desktop. Recently I purchased a generic KVM switch for my office. When I connect this to the server the video res drops back to 1024x768 instead of 1200x1024. I did some research and apparently Fedora 13 no longer uses the Xorg.conf file for display setup, it detects the hardware in the fly when you boot and uses the appropriate drivers (unless one exists in the /etc/X11 folder).
The specs for the KVM say that it can do way more than 1200x1024 so I can't see a problem with that. Also I tested it with a windows installation and I was able to obtain 1200x1024 resolution. The video card is a NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS and the current driver being loaded is the nouveau according to lspci. When connected to the KVM the display widget in gnome wont detect the monitor or graphics card anymore. I used system-config-display to change the display settings and it created this Xorg.conf file -

Oct 14, 2010I just installed the Catalyst drivers under FC13 (package xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-10.9-1.fc13.i686 ) and I am superhappy, as it worked straight out of the box.
The only little annoying thing is that I lost the Plymouth graphical boot, which is now substituted with the text scrollbar...

I booted the installation media, the root file system mounted on /mnt, seted /mnt as my root with the chroot command and edited /etc/inittab, then unmounted and rebooted but it didn't help me. Is it possible to run gconf-editor under live cd and disable splash? How can I boot Fedora in single mode? For example use the following steps I'll be able to boot RHEL into single-user mode:
At the GRUB splash screen at boot time, press any key to enter the GRUB interactive menu.
Select Red Hat Enterprise Linux with the version of the kernel that you wish to boot and type a to append the line.
Go to the end of the line and type single as a separate word (press the Spacebar and then type single ). Press Enter to exit edit mode.
Fedora :: Screen Locks Up During Graphical Boot After Update?
Jan 5, 2010After a recent "yum update", my laptop screen locks up during graphical boot. I use rhgb on the kernel line. The container on the screen fills up with charge and then the screen locks. I have to use the power button to reboot. If I press ESC when the boot splash appears (i.e., boot in text mode), it works.
If I set plymouth to "details" mode using
$ plymouth-set-default-theme details --rebuild-initrd
It boots up correctly. This is equivalent to a text boot screen. I doubt whether it is a video driver problem. I reinstalled the nvidia driver and it is working. I also reinstalled plymouth and plymouth-themes-*.
Fedora :: Cannot Get Graphical Desktop On Boot When No Monitor Attached (F13)
Jun 2, 2010I've put a fresh install of Fedora 13 x86_64 on my new server and I have it automatically log in to the gnome desktop so I can control it via VNC. However this only happens when there is a monitor physically connected when the computer boots. If there is no monitor present at boot time, there is no graphical session started, however I want it to start whether or not a monitor is present.
My hardware is a Zotac IONITX-G-E board (which has an Atom N330 and a NVidia ion chipset of some description). I'm using the Fedora default graphics driver (nouveau). Why doesn't it start a graphical session with no monitor, and is there any way to get Fedora to start one whether or not there is a monitor connected?

Sep 30, 2010Quick question. I have a Dell Latitude E6500 with Fedora 13 on it. There is a wireless radio switch (hardware) on the right side of the machine, next to the CD drive. When I flip it to "off", the wireless gets disconnected -- as I expect. But when I flip the switch back to the "on" position, nothing happens -- wireless is still disabled.
How do I re-enable the wireless after I flip the switch back to the "on" position?

Jul 21, 2011I am trying to load up the NVidia driver in Fedora 15 and am stuck. After boot up the graphical login screen comes up fine but when I go to log in I get an error message and it asks me to try to login again. I need to be able to get into text mode so I can edit some files but I do not know how to do this other that starting in multi-uder mode by editing /etc/inittab (or in FC15, editing some links in /etc/systemd/system/). Is there a way to get to text mode from the graphical loginscreen or do I need to get a rescue disk and startup in rescue mode to change files?

Feb 24, 2010I installed ubuntu 9.1 today, my friend also installed it using a disc which I borrowed Everything seemed to go fine. I used boot camp to make a partition after going through the installation process I found out that, that was a bad idea and i just made a ubuntu partition of 18gb. I was able to get rid of the bootcamp partition so now i Just have free disk space left out of that.
I wanted to switch back to my Mac to get to work on somethings after I had installed ubuntu. However a after the GRUB and clicking on Mac A black screen with words and numbers I haven't seen before popped up. Here is some of what it said

Jul 19, 2011I am relatively familiar with Ubuntu, but some time last week it updated and now ALT + Tab temporarily minimizes windows to switch between open apps and shows a little window with icons representing the open apps. I much preferred the old way of just switching between them without minimizing and the more graphically appealing (I guess to some) window. I have checked Keyboard Shortcuts and it seems that I no longer have that my original option available, is there another way to select that option, or add it back to the keyboard shortcuts or am I just stuck with it unless I decide to back up to a previous release? Hope this made sense, and I won't be able to try any suggestions until tomorrow so please feel free to throw as many suggestions as you want to me and I will try them all one by one tomorrow morning.

Jan 14, 2011Having a bit of an issue with my Lucid x64 HTPC. I can get the image to appear through DVI on a spare external monitor, but when it is disconnected and switched back to HDMI I get not picture on the TV any longer. I switched the sound output to an external USB device for testing the unit and noticed on reboot that I had lost everything via HDMI even though the setting had been switched back previously. Obviously a setting must be off here somewhere, but I've yet to find it. I've rebooted with only the HDMI connected, but still nothing.

May 17, 2011I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a usb stick and have been running it from there. I was messing around with the "Login Screen" utility and changed the session choice to "User defined session" (or something similar). I thought this would allow me to pick the session to use (Unity, Gnome) but that was wrong. So right now, when I login, I have a blank screen with no menu bars. If someone could give me the commandline command to run the "Login Screen", I should be able to switch it back.

Still using Gnome, though. I upgraded to 11. Then, when I try to switch back to Ubuntu, I can't get the default Ubuntu theme to stick. When I log in, it looks correct for about twenty seconds, then everything switches to Ambiance or Plymouth or something else. Basically, I'm trying to get the brown task bar back and I can't. It's all light-colored.

Jul 8, 2011I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. Mainboard Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2V. My LCD is a HDTV monitor which is plugged to onboard graphic card.
I don't know what happen with my Ubuntu. It sometimes goes black when I try to wake my PC when it's suspended previously. The screen is black, but I still can move mouse cursor. I also can do blindly click on stuff on screen (I could play a song last time by clicking randomly). This problem also happens sometimes when I switch back to PC from TV (My LCD is a HDTV monitor).
The only action I can do when it happened is reset my PC.
