How do I get these icons back & not have it happen again.
I have installed recently a bunch of distros and settled with xubuntu 11.04 for my old laptop. Everything worked fine out of the box except some times wireless stopped working and the pc needed a restart. One of those times i restarted and because restart seemed unresponsive I clicked again but a problem tab poped up. Every time that i clicked restart, the pop up appeard I was forced to force shutdown.
1. Maximize/Minimize/Close buttons are completly missing. Even windows settings (where you can unjust those buttons) does not work. It is blank.
2. Cursor is invisible but when i click something appears , stays visible but the cursor is a different icon than before.
3. other problems as well. I cannot move terminal etc.
After playing around with Ubuntu Tweaks to remove the "Recent Documents" logging, I somehow ended up losing the icons for "Applications" and "Files & Folders".
I tried lots of different things but the only thing that seemed to sort it was this:
Log out. Log in under Ubuntu Classic (for some reason dropping back to tty with Ctr, Alt and F2 didn't do it). Bring up the terminal and do code...
Log back into Ubuntu (not classic) and hopefully, you should end up with all icons back as they were.
This worked for me but I can't remember if I'd gotten rid of the ".recent-documents.xbel" file in my home folder first, so if all else fails you could try that before you start removing and re-installing Unity.
I'm running Sabayon Linux, and recently when through a major upgrade where a lot of packages were upgraded.
After the upgrade, when launching firefox, the back and forward icons are missing. The buttons are actually there, as I can still select an empty grey rectangle. I also checked and it's happening for all users on the system.
I was using the persona's theme, but I stopped using that (for performance reasons). I just disabled it, I haven't actually removed it.
I tried re-installing gnome-icon-theme package from a suggestion on another linuxquestions.org thread, but that didn't help.
It's not a big deal as I can still use the buttons, but curious if anyone has any insight into what I can do to get the icons back.
The Volume control and network manager icons are not visible in the notification area..
I sure its has nothing to do with
Add to panel-->Notification area....beacuse the notification area is already there..
but the icons are not visible
the only way that I can make the visible is by typing code...
for volume control.. Only then they become visible in the notification area
Both, the network manager and volume control are mentioned in the "Start-up programs"
I already restored regular icons by going to gconf. However, the icons on top right where the "power" button is located, still have no icons. Is there any way to add icons to the hibernate/ shut down , etc words?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI firstly installed compiz packages for the effects. After installation my minimize, restore and close icon has lost. Then I removed if by typing compiz --remove . I got my lost icon. But again when I tried to use the visual effect Extra the minimize, maximize and close icon got lost . If I don't use Extra visual effect the icons are restored. Now how can I use the Extra Visual effect and compiz without the removable of minimize, maximize and close icon
View 4 Replies View RelatedHey, bars and in the Places menu if I click anything from Home Folder to Downloads I'll get an error like: "Could not open location 'file:///home/michael/Downloads' No application is registered as handling this file"
View 3 Replies View Relatedi don't know what i did but the minimize exit and expand buttons that are usually on the top left or right of windows just dissapeared, it's getting really irritating =/ Anyway to restore them?
View 2 Replies View Relatedrecently installed via synaptic some packages about netbook to try the new appearance. Having decided that I didnt like it, I chose to revert, by uninstalling those packagesMy problem now is that on every application I execute, the icons that are usually found on top right of the screen (minimize, maximize and close) cannot be seen and, if I want to shut an application down I must do it via control q or control w depending of the application. I mean every application, be it firefox, opening folders on the hard drive, open officeIt may be that there is still a package I must uninstall.
View 9 Replies View Relatedjust upgraded to 10.04 - everything seems to be working OK apart from the 3 icons (close, min & max) have moved to the top left of the windows.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was using Compiz, and was going to check out the 3DBox add on. I clicked it, enabled it, and then my windows vanished. I rebooted. Then, when I came back, all my windows open now in the top left of the screen, and the close, minimize and maximize icons are gone. I cannot even see the top bar of a window to move it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedLast night everything was fine and running normally. When I booted up today all my windows have no borders and the maximize/minimize/close buttons are all gone! WTF? Did somebody eat them?I have read many threads with several fixes but none has worked for me I have uninstalled emerald as I thought that may be the cause, but it's still the same.Screen effects are still present (wobbly windows).
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe close/minimize/restore bar vanished ever since upgrading to 11.04. Does anyone know how I can get it back?
View 6 Replies View RelatedThis is probably a really simple fix but tbh since I installed unity I'm stumped.
I didnt like the unity desktop so I've gone back to the classic desktop but I have no bar above my windows with the max/min/close option.
To add to that issue, sometimes windows open with their menus under the panel at the top of the screen so there is no way to move or close them
I seem to be having a problem with Banshee. When I boot up, it automatically starts up, which seems innocent enough. However, I opened up Exaile (because Banshee had this problem of not recognizing spaces in some of my songs' filenames, replacing them with '%20'), and closed Banshee from its notifications icon. It closed, but about 3-5 seconds later its window pops up again. I used Ctrl+Q to quit, but it still came back after a few seconds. I've tried opening up a terminal and typing "killall banshee-1", but still, Banshee keeps coming back. Even though I restart and not open Exaile, Banshee still keeps coming back when I try to kill it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed XFCE on a machine built with the FC 15 LXDE based live CD using yum groupinstall XFCE. I got a usable XFCE session, but after a period of use, some things have gone missing. The windows don't have minimize, resize and close icons on the top bar. The settings selection for "Window Manager Tweaks" doesn't start any program. The programs that are open in the users session are not saved, even though that option is checked. Can this be explained by corruption of a single file somewhere? Or should I re-install XFCE again.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04, at first everything worked fine. Then i changed the compiz configuration to cube, confirmed some questions, and now i have no window decorations. No icons for close, minimize, maximize. No resizing by mouse. No title bar.
In the launcher, i lost applications and files&?, and in the top menu bar, i lost the leftmost part, where some menus and the Ubuntu icon were found.
1. How do I put the minimize, maximize & close buttons back on the right side?
2. everytime I leave my PC for about 5 mins and come back the screen is locked, this is very annoying and pointless as I have a desktop. How/where can I set it to never lock screen when idle?
When ubuntu decided to move the close minimize maximize buttons to the left side, then here is your solution! i wrote this little script to help:
just go to your terminal and type this: (replacing /where/you/put/it/ with where you actually put the file) "sh /where/you/put/it/MoveButtonsToRight.sh"

I recently lost my Min Max and close buttons on pretty much every window. This seemed to start when I upgraded to 10.10. I did what was told in another thread on missing task bars. I managed to get them all back except on Firefox. I tried the preferences, double clicking up there, right clicking.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIf you are like me, you can't stand the new placement of the Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons. Here is a useful how to guide, with screen shots, on how to put them back on the right side:[URL]
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter a week or so i noticed that the title bar (the one with the minimise and close buttons) is missing. After a little search i found that in terminal if i type metacity --replace it would come back. And that it did. However, everytime i reboot i need to do it again.Starting to get a little annoying now.
View 3 Replies View Relatedas you can see in the screen shot provided i'm missing my close, minimize and maximize botton that normally suppose to be at the right hand conor of an application. this goes for all of the application and i dont know what i did for this to happen.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi saw a thread on here regarding this same topic a few months back but i can't seem to find it now. my problem is that in firefox, the bar at the top of the window with the minimize/maximize and close buttons is gone... i don't know how this changed, must have hit something by mistake..
View 1 Replies View Related1) How do I align my desktop icons to a grid?
2) Is it possible to move the close, maximize, and minimize buttons to the left side of the window? I prefer that to the since I'm used to GNOME Unity.
I have a pretty strange problem, when I booted the computer and logged in on Ubuntu none of the close, minimize, etc. buttons were showing up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using 10.04 for a few months here and installed the truglass 0.5 theme for quite some time. I've been putting up with one downfall of it, which is on certain windows the min/max/close buttons do not show. I can hover over where they should be to actually use them, but they are not visible on all windows. They always come up with firefox, unless I hit a pop-up and a new window comes up. Any nautilus window doesn't have them unless focus on that window is lost. Any ideas on how I can solve this? See attached screenshot.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAs title states, they are missing, and from every window. I have googled this and found fixes but in doing some of the "fixes" the bar at the top of the screen disappears and docky becomes effectless.
