Had to restart following an extract crash, and upon restarting, much of my theme, including all my icons had changed. Prior to this I was using the Awoken Icon Set. I've gone through and rerun the Awoken Customization script, but no luck. Simply trying to change my theme, and icons in the theme manager doesn't work either.
View 1 RepliesI recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu for the ability to easily change the system wide locale and language settings.However I've noticed a strange thing when logging in to my account with Japanese set as the language. Although I'm using the default "Ambiance" theme, the folder icons in Nautilus and some other styling seem to change to a different (much uglier) theme. For example on the top panel the network connection icon also reverts to an blue computer screen icon from the other theme, although other icons on the panel and the rest of the styling remains as the correct theme!
I'm now back in English locale, and my theme is normal again. In fact I don't even see the ugly other theme in the theme selector window. I haven't noticed this problem using other languages such as French and Russian.It's only a stylistic theme, but it's really ugly and really bugging me. what might be going wrong?EDIT***********************Ok I just logged back in again using the Japanese locale in order to post a screencap, and of course the problem has vanished now! I already logged in and out a number of times earlier to see if it would solve the problem and it didn't
Something has changed all my file permissions to read only and when I try and change them back it wont let me. Is there something I can do i Nautilus to correct it?
It even effects the waste basket-all the stuff in there is now read only and when I delete items I get a file operations window, which comes and then goes like its deleted them, but they re still in the waste basket, doesnt show an error message like it does if I try and move any other file.
when i was sleeping my computer restarted itself and when i signed back in all the windows were huge. the resolution is set at 900x600 and no other option makes the windows smaller.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently edited a .pptx presentation in LibreOffice, and it wouldn't close, until finally I had to force it to quit. The document recovered fine, and I saved it and all is good. I thought.
A couple of icons on the desktop acted weird, as in they wouldn't move, and I got a blank notification window when I tried to access them. So I rebooted.
Now, Launcher icons that had color are all in black and white, or most are, my desktop icons are b/w, and no longer have the icons that were associated with them originally. They seem to operate well, everything just changed.
I am running a Dual Core AMD Phenom II X2 565 64bit processor, 2G Ram, Natty, 2.6.38.10 generic kernel, Radeon 4290 graphics.
All of my windows (I know, bad word, but what else do you call them?) have changed to b/w themes as well.
I have deleted the mime directory under /usr/share/icons/Humanity, and many files' icons have changed to the gnome style. Then I restored the mime directory back, and typed command sudo gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Humanity. But my action doesn't work. The files' icons remains the gnome style.

Since normal user has no permission to read/write to /dev/ttySx, the program doesn't work. if I changed the permissions using chmod in su, it will works for that session. When restarts the permission changed to default again. So what to do a normal user program to access /dev/ttyS0?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am relatively familiar with Ubuntu, but some time last week it updated and now ALT + Tab temporarily minimizes windows to switch between open apps and shows a little window with icons representing the open apps. I much preferred the old way of just switching between them without minimizing and the more graphically appealing (I guess to some) window. I have checked Keyboard Shortcuts and it seems that I no longer have that my original option available, is there another way to select that option, or add it back to the keyboard shortcuts or am I just stuck with it unless I decide to back up to a previous release? Hope this made sense, and I won't be able to try any suggestions until tomorrow so please feel free to throw as many suggestions as you want to me and I will try them all one by one tomorrow morning.

BACKGROUND: I installed a dark theme that made the openoffice word page black, so I had to find a fix for it on the page above. I'm not using the theme anymore, but it was "Slickness black" on gnomelooks.

Also incase anyone was going to ask, my login DID look like the second picture at one point (before the openoffice fix) I just removed openoffice completely and reinstalled it so that isn't the solution.
I installed KDE on my Ubuntu laptop and then got rid of it. I used puregnome which worked but I still have weird fonts in Firefox. I tried adjusting the preferences in Firefox but nothing works. How can I revert it back?I did a fresh install (but kept my home directory) and it made no change. I also removed the .mozilla folder entirely and uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox. No change.How can I get this back?

Anyone know how to switch which boot splash is used back?
It seems I had some kind of intrusion and I found 6 files changed its ownership to user 1035 and group 1035, I don't know how but I need to change them back to its original owner (root) because one of them is the ls command and the other is the ifconfig how can I revert them to its original state? I cant do it with chown.

Yesterday I installed wine-1.2 (using Synaptic), in order to be able to build programs for Windows. This in itself seemingly succeeded, but as a result of the installation, fonts in Firefox changed (one can say immediately - when the installation was done, the fonts had changed).
For example, in this forum, the non-monospaced font changed in some way I can't put my finger on. Right now, posts feel less readable, but getting used to it may just be a question of time.
Some other pages (in existing tabs, and when looking them up again) changed the font size, some increased the size, some decreased it. This can be fixed by using Ctrl-+ or Ctrl-- quite easily, but <whine> I would like these kind of changes not to happen at all </whine>.
I uninstalled wine (not removed completely - I don't know what the difference is), but this didn't undo the font change.
The font settings within Firefox (Preferences) don't seem to have been changed.
The point of this post is to ask what may have happened, where such dependencies between fonts are stored, and how to undo the change, in case I'd like to.
I did a bunch of updates, in sid, no issues. But when I rebooted the next day the log in had chanded. No problems logging in, the appearance had changed, and you now have to use the mouse to click on your name to open the password box, where before you could hit enter and get the same results. It is not much, but I have been trying to to restore it back with out much luck. I've played with gdm and gdm3 and a couple of other things but no luck. I did see a update for log in but have not been able to figure out the next step.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Lucid installation which I've imaged and pushed to several computers on the network at my office. The system authenticates network users with Active Directory using Kerberos, and mounts NFS shares from a Lucid server downstairs using pam_mount. It all works quite smoothly most of the time, but I get desktop icons in Gnome only on the first login. If I log out, then log in as a different user (local or network, it doesn't matter), the desktop icons are all gone. Everything else looks normal, and I can open a Nautilus window and view any location on the hard drive just as expected. If I use the run dialog or a terminal window to executekillall nautilus the icons are restored. This works whether any instance of a file browser window is open or not.
I have noticed similar, but far less consistent, behavior with gnome-panel. Every once in a while the panels will fail to appear when I log in, but I can restore them withkillall gnome-panel When I run either command, everything works fine until the next login. If I reboot the machine, I get everything back again for one login. Then the desktop icons will disappear, and I have to kill Nautilus and let it restart in order to get them back. I expect I'm missing something important here, but I don't know where to look next.
I'm running Fedora 11 with KDE desktop. Yesterday I installed several updates, including a kernel update. Now the Shutdown and Restart icons have disappeared from the Leave menu, which only contains the icons for "Logout", "Lock", "Switch User", "Suspend to Ram" and "Suspend to Disk". I had "Shutdown" and "Restart" icons in my Favorites menu, but when selected they open a "Logout" dialogue.
I can Shutdown and Restart from the command line, but would like to restore the capability to do it from the icons. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix?
I just installed xubuntu-desktop on my Ubuntu 9.10 desktop, just to have the option of using xfce ( I did the same with Kubuntu - kde). I have noticed that the Xubuntu splash screen now comes up rather the the Ubuntu default splash screen.
I tried to use Start-Up Manager to changed back to Ubuntu but Xubuntu xsplash screen ( one with the fire flies ) still comes up. Is their any way to change this back to the Ubuntu Splash Screen without the Xubuntu screne coming up at all ??
When I first installed openSUSE 11.4 the /boot directory looked like this:
I had installed VirtualBox through Yast and decoded to delete. After deleting the /boot directory looked like this, pointing now to the desktop kernel.
I went into YAST and deleted all kernel entries that contained desktop, trying to get back to the original configuration.
After doing this, the /boot directory now looks like this.
Is there any way to get back to the original kernel configuration without having to do a complete installation?
Somehow gedit went ahead and modified its hotkeys to have save be nothing, and control s be find. How to get save back?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a usb stick and have been running it from there. I was messing around with the "Login Screen" utility and changed the session choice to "User defined session" (or something similar). I thought this would allow me to pick the session to use (Unity, Gnome) but that was wrong. So right now, when I login, I have a blank screen with no menu bars. If someone could give me the commandline command to run the "Login Screen", I should be able to switch it back.
